Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Not at all. Futher away than ever. I heard the car park is gone now

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭py

I passed through it a few weeks back. From the Celbridge town side everything looks ok but as you get towards the house and motorway side, everything appears very unkempt. Looks like a lot of remediation work going on at the main house. Place looks poorly compared to when I was there prior to the pandemic.

Looks like it will be my NENDY parkrun for the foreseeable future so 😏.

I did the Athlone RSC parkrun this morning. Very sunny with a strong enough breeze so wasn't breaking any records but very nice run. I like the out and back part where you get to wave to your friends. I could easily see it being a pb course.

Everything you need there- toilets coffee 👍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 732 ✭✭✭Duzzie

i did it a few weeks ago. A vast improvement over their previous route.

I did the Dodder Valley parkrun for the last few weeks since the Marley run is off for the concerts. Well organized with a very friendly crowd.

The last stretch as you come back towards the finish line is tough with a slight incline and a headwind, no records broken but I will be going back again for sure.

Slipped under 25 minutes for the first time this weekend. This time last year I was struggling through couch 25k on a treadmill. Only managed my first outdoor 5k with my first parkrun on March 30th in 29:30. I think I've burned through all the easy gains though!

Well done you, the better times are a lovely feeling. However, even if the times do not improve or a PB feels very far away (mine was 14 months ago and feels miles off), just going out and doing the exercise is the real winner.

  • Registered Users Posts: 420 ✭✭ISOP

You'll get to 21/22 minutes soon enough based on that progression, well done

  • Registered Users Posts: 420 ✭✭ISOP

I did Claremorris at the weekend, a lovely event and setting

This is my local park run and having only started doing it this year i love it. Good crowds and the course is good - wide paths pretty much throughout with a nice hill at the end. I know what you mean about the crosswinds though haha

Random question, does VHI still give you a run credit if you do a Northern Ireland parkrun?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭py

  • Registered Users Posts: 5 beckybb

No, you only get the credit for parkrun events in the Republic as Vitality, not the VHI, are the sponsors for UK events.

EDIT that was a reply to question from flazio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,257 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Thank you @beckybb Must remember to stay south of the border on bank holidays.

Meanwhile looks like there's trouble at the top for Oranmore Parkrun. The picture is blurry but it looks like they've thrown out their event director and are looking for a new one.

Started running in February and have only done four so far. Trying to do ten different ones for my first ten as I'm into other hobbies where stats matter!

So far Tramore Valley (ok), Youghal (quite enjoyed that one), UL (bit of a narrow course due to growth) but Bere Island wins despite the hills. Seems to be a popular one for milestones, running royalty was in the building that day.

8 years after my local parkrun made international news because of some grumpy parish councillors, the "replacement" event restarted today about half a mile away and in a different parish (although with some of the same councillors). But more importantly this parish council doesn't have the final say over the use of the course for the new event so they just get to grumble a bit in the background and the county Council said yes to parkrun.

Was one of the worst kept secrets in Bristol parkrun world today and just over 400 turned up, I expect a good number more than that in the next few weeks. It's a double out and back course on mostly gravel paths which seemed to just about accommodate the numbers. Plenty of parking at a big Tesco down the road.

Great event, and loads of people in apricot tops with the name of the former event.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,257 ✭✭✭✭flazio

What was the old event called and what's the new event called?

And through some googling Three Brooks is the new one.

Sorry, just a habit of being vague when talking about these parkrun locations online which I fell into without realising.

Twitter/X/Twix/whatever account that might be worth following is @ new5kparkruns it's able to see behind the curtain and work out when new events are getting set up around the World.

For example I believe this unnamed Irish run is going to be in some woods just outside Portlaoise.

Dirty rumour I'm hearing is that over in the UK British Athletics were looking into the private Parkrun system that's used for overseas military bases and Progression run here to set up "elite" invite only parkruns in the UK. Apparently they were going to ask applicants to submit their local times and if good enough they'd get an invite to the private event.

Can’t see something like that being called parkrun.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

    Yeah, wouldn't be parkrun.

At most it would be parkrun selling their software/ rebadging their app for other races to use for compiling results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,257 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Hopefully. I don't like to speak ill of our fine tourists but this fella did seem a bit full of it.

Anyway, better evidence that Togher Woods Portlaoise is happening. Found a Flickr page set up.

Visited a gem of a parkrun this morning at Teifi Marshes Nature Park parkrun in Wales. A lovely course with quite a sting in the tail. A beautiful location with lovely views over Cardigan Bay at the finish. Also a fantastic set of volunteers who were very welcoming. Travelled across to Fishguard on the ferry yesterday and stayed overnight in Cardigan Castle. Well worth a visit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,257 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Two Parkruns in Wales set up earlier this year with practically the same name and would certainly be of interest to alphabet chasers. They're called Y Promenâd and Y Promenâd, Abermaw . The former is inland in Brecon, the latter is on the more expected Welsh coastline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 732 ✭✭✭Duzzie

I've looked into the Brecon one, not at all easy to get to.

Inch beach is always worth a visit if you're in the area.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,257 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Same with Narin Beach on the other side of the Wild Atlantic Way. Not tried Laytown or the Northern Ireland one. I understand the Yarmouth one is a sand crawl rather than a run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭Reg'stoy

Keep an eye on Laytown's facebook page, as tides may mean it doesn't go ahead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,257 ✭✭✭✭flazio

I'll probably get used to it in time but I'm not a fan of the new all blue bibs for Run Director that are getting rolled out. The white ones are easier to find and matched most other countries bibs. Good to see a refresh of the location signs though. Handy for the tourist selfies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 732 ✭✭✭Duzzie

they look too similar to the parkwalker vests. At least we don't have the pink volunteer vests that they use in the UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,257 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Seems I'm wrong about the white vests. Just saw a video from a YouTube channel I follow called markruns and he did a run in Wales called Old Railway Trail yesterday and the Run Director there was wearing blue. Must be getting rolled out across the whole parkrun community. I just assumed the refresh was because of VHI's rebranding.

I think we have reached peak parkrun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,257 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Well, if it helps get the thread back on topic, I'm averaging around 35 minutes and I'm doing extra sprint sessions at an athletics track to get that down to sub 30 minutes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,584 ✭✭✭Reg'stoy

That's a big drop in your PB, just be mindful that you will in essence be running all out, so probably set a target Saturday, running all out at every parkrun till you get to 30mins, might lead to an injury.

A good workout might be doing 1K intervals at say 6-30/45 pace, you won't be doing a full 5K, but you'll get a feeling for the quicker pace. Sprints will help you finish strong, but gradually increasing your 1k pace will build your confidence and make you fitter.

You're currently running 7min pace for 35mins, looking to do 6min for 30mins might take a while dependent on age, fitness, the course you will run, days a week running etc etc.

Speaking personally, I'm hoping to go officially sub 23mins, I've ran sub 23 5K's but never a PR. My current fitness would be sub 24min so I'm honestly looking at a Saturday a good few months away. I've some trail races and 10k's to do, I'm getting older and my fitness prime was a couple of years ago.

Building up gradually is a better idea, so maybe once a week do a 10min easy warm up at 7-30+ per K, try 1K at 6-45, recover for a couple of mins, another K at 6-45, recover and dependent on your current fitness, do this for either 3/4 or 5 intervals and then cool down. Again dependent on fitness and how you feel, reduce the interval pace and make them longer, so say 2K at 6-30, eventually running 5K at sub 6mins will be a normal Parkrun.

On the subject of Welsh Parkruns - I did Haverfordwest last weekend as I was traveling back from Fishguard.

Absolutely vile! Its on an abandoned racecourse and is a two lap affair - the first half of each lap is on a gentle, unrelenting slope for the entire kilometer and a bit. That kind of slope that you don't notice, you just think you're tired. Its also featureless so you don't have anything to look at.

Glad I did it, but that course is, surprisingly, one for the sadistic.

Is parkwalker the most pointless volunteer role? I could probably see a point to it on a single loop parkrun where the walkers may feel isolated but on our three lapper I fail to see any benefit. Perhaps partly that's because our route is next to a national park and there are much better options to go for a walk and not get buzzed by large groups of runners.

Does the parkwalker role work better at other parkruns?

This is all gradual. The time window is a year (I'm 41) but it's just taking it a chunk at a time, down to 34:30, down to 34, down to 33:30 etc and if by this time next year I've only shaved it down to 32, so what? Improvement is improvement.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,169 ✭✭✭diceyreilly

Done it twice and my Mrs has done about 5 times.
i was injured ( from Running ) honestly dont see the point of it at all.
but its not a key role. So no harm in it either.

Both times i did it i asked to be tail walker but that gig was already fulfilled

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

The idea of the park walker role is to try and fill in blank spaces on the course, and results, to make is appear that more people walk which will then encourage more people to walk. Their end goal of getting more walkers participating is good, just they don't really know how to go about doing so.

Needs more interaction on a local level by individual event teams, which is a big ask to get them to do more. Not sure they can do much to encourage walkers from a national level. They can create the product of parkrun nationally, but convincing someone to go for a walk around they local park on a Saturday morning need people to bring their friends and neighbours along, not someone wearing a hiviz top saying park walker on the back.

Mightn't even take you a year, because you've got the right attitude. You'll notice your average 1K time come down, you'll be chatting during parkrun, where you didn't previously. Best of luck, as Del Boy used to say "this time next year Rodney, we'll be running Parkrun PB's"

    Stunning morning in Land's End.

    What's your Point? 😛

If you have the 5k app, take a look at the Voroni filter. Lands End takes a nice chunk of the map.
