Not to my knowledge. I think he was just referring to them as examples of modern vehicles with lots of electronics

It will be interesting to see what replaces the mowag considering the tight time lines that have been put in the plan

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,022 ✭✭✭sparky42

assuming of course the replacement project comes within a decade of the proposed timeframe? I mean weren’t the two extra helicopters meant to have been this year? It’s going to be interesting considering the trade offs and costs of modern systems.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,022 ✭✭✭sparky42

well, it’s not like there’s any global instability…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,904 ✭✭✭roadmaster

According the Grand Plan we are already in the requirements phase for the new armour and the acquisition phase for the extra helicopters only starts in september. The midlife upgrade of the mowags only finished a couple of months ago aswell.

    Plenty of time!

I wonder if there could be some issues with not having enough people in the DOD capable of running multiple large scale acquisitions programs at once?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,022 ✭✭✭sparky42

If only there were other departments who run multiple large scale programs at once (not saying well mind you) that the DOD could pull some expertise from…

I mean no question that's an issue, but given the possibility of multiple procurement projects over the next decade it might be something they might want to improve if it is a bottleneck.

And in terms of the Global Instability, everyone ready for Trump round 2? I wonder how much the defence issue is going to be massively pushed now in the EU?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,904 ✭✭✭roadmaster

When you look at the cost for keeping the defence forces property portfoilo there is strong argument for building new modern bases on greenfield sites and hand over all the bases to the opw or other hertiage groups.

I'm reminded that the Collins dictionary word of the year in 2022 was "permacrisis"..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,428 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

    I completely agree with this.

The likes of Custume and McKee need to be divested and turned into beautiful and modern housing and schools and what not.

A 21st century defence force, should be in 21st century barracks, with all the security, flexibility and connectivity that offers. Not 18th and 19th century quarters that are limiting in so many respects.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,904 ✭✭✭roadmaster

The problem with the current barracks is they were designed for an army of ocupation not a national defence force . When the new Army Design is complete it will be interesting to see if there is anything radical considering the army cant get away from ATCP it seams.

If National Security was an issue we would ensure more than 1 naval ship was at sea on patrol.

If national security was an issue we would not need to pull a HEMS helicopter to drop special forces to a ship at sea.

The figures costed are complete pie in the sky as they dont even include the fact for a new base the DOD would have to pay the semi state company that owns the land they looked at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,428 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Let's be honest, neither Cathal Brugha nor McKee are integral to national security, considering their tasks could be performed elsewhere with proper provision, and the government isn't really serious about real national security, considering the massive gaping holes in our air, sea and cyber defences and human and electronic intelligence.

But, it is important that the DF have a base or bases in the Capital, for ceremonial and ACP tasks, as well as for historical and heritage reasons.

To my mind, the government shouldn't be spending money figuring out where in Dublin to put these 1,300 homes and the jobs and services to go with them, but where else in the Country they should go, to make a proper dent in our appalling record of sustainable regional development.

I had no massive yearn to keep Cathal Brugha, or not, but I'm glad the Tánaiste has come down on the side of shutting down one of Eamon Ryan's bonkers flights of policy. He's an appalling minister with a total lack of strategic thinking about him, and I'm glad he's in his final months as a member of the Dáil and the government.

To be clear, I would never get rid of both in any case. I appreciate the need for a fair sized secure site within the City.

not exactly breaking news, but bless the DOD for managing to put out another empty PR piece without actually doing anything…

To be fair, the DOD has figured out that were we are may not be a defence anymore (if it ever really was), I mean they don't intend to actually do anything about it of course, but at least they have put it in writing to cover their arse if anything goes wrong.

"The Department will lead on the development of a National Maritime Security Strategy".

Sometimes I just want to go down there and shake them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,022 ✭✭✭sparky42

I could think of other things to do with the department, but sure lets start with that. I mean its great that it seems that there's some reality breaking through, but there's still a sense of no urgency for fixing all the recognised issues.

Exactly. They have become highly proficient at publishing many, many glossy documents.

But have gotten even worse at putting in place manpower, assets and increased capabilities. In all domains.

The USS Patrick Gallagher (DDG-127) Arleigh Burke Class (Flight IIA) guided missile destroyer. Christened yesterday at Bath Iron Works, Maine.

Named for Lance Corporal Patrick Gallagher, USMC. Born Ballyhaunis, Mayo, 1944. KIA, Da Nang, Vietnam, 1967.

Corporal Gallagher was a recipient of the Navy Cross and Congressional Medal of Honour for repeated acts of outstanding courage in the field, including throwing himself on a live grenade to protect others of his unit. The weapon failed to explode and he tossed it into a lake.

Gallagher is one of the first non-Americans to receive such an honour, that of a Warship being named for him.

An interesting reflection on intelligence and national security matters by the AC Security and Intelligence Bureau.

Its certainly a pertinent matter for both AGS and DF, but really its time for a new government agency to coordinate and develop intelligence capacity and proficiency, to link directly into NSAC and Cabinet Committee F.

The national security strategy is taking far too long, just like every other urgent security and defence issue.

The UK Defence Journal's twitter engagement is hilariously immature. Its like Paddy Cosgrave is managing their account.

While the topic may be valid, they really shouldn't be taken any more seriously than two quid gossip mag.

I think ukdj might be trying to fill an "August slump" this particular article was out then in February with plenty of the usual comments, but for some reason they felt the need to simply republish it today? It is strange how much extra coverage they have started to give us, I mean sure its not a surprise when they have the ones up about all the international views on the state of things, but the article on the UNFIL incident for example is a bit strange.

UK Defence sources trying to shape policy of the new government….

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,022 ✭✭✭sparky42

Not really given how old the original report was, seems to be more connected with their upswing in Irish coverage for whatever reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 374 ✭✭vswr

UK are in the process of doing the autumn budget… there is a lot being mentioned about potential military cuts… there are numerous military outlets doing cajoling to raise awareness on various topics at the moment… another huge area is the Navy new subs and frigates/destroyers…. along with Army numbers and pushing forward on the Challenger 3 and various autonomous systems …

the above article is just one aspect of the RAF push…. lots of mentions abut the Wedgetails, Space warfare, transport gaps (no C-130 type craft) etc…. at the moment.

edit: with the lacklustre Irish response, and the UK really concerned about the "Irish issue" (it's the American's too)… I can see something like more "overt" P-8 patrols from the American's, British, and Norwegian's as a potential option. It's pretty much in place at the moment, when required. I see a more routine and structured element happening though….

How it is done is a different matter (do they patrol from Oceanic airspace only? Does Ireland pay towards it? etc…)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,904 ✭✭✭roadmaster

Its the UK Media at the end of the day. They have a quota to give about this country as old habits die hard.

They dont understand the only thing that will change an irish elected rep is if it will cause them losing votes.

Firstly, I hope the injured man will make a speedy and full recovery.

But, this is very serious for a number of reasons.

    • The security protocols around DF installations
    • Misinformation around the DFs role in UN mandated peacekeeping missions, especially in the Middle East
    • Feeding a frenzy of far-=right narrative around the pillars of the State, immigration, housing etc etc - irrespective of there being no facts in the public domain about the background of the attacker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭kabakuyu

Hope the victim makes a full recovery, very disturbing attack.

No indication of attackers motives, but far left radicals are active in Galway, graffiti is commonplace around Galway from same group.

Btw the garrison church is outside the security perimeter of the barracks,it's not clear where attack took place.

Absolutely no point speculating without information.

Could be a radical, could be a drunk or a lad deep down the K hole, could be driven by mental illness, or could be none of those things.

There'll be a Court report soon enough and we'll know.

It says in the indo article that solders fired warning shots to try to prevent the chaplain being stabbed anymore.

Is there a reason they didnt just shoot the attacker?
