Uefa Champions/ Europa/ Conference League rights 2024-27: Premier, VMTV, and RTE

There is also only 15 minutes of build-up for Premier Sports, whereby VM and RTE have a 30minute build-up, plus both are on until 10:30pm, meanwhile Premier Sports on until 10pm. Feels like a commentary only thing for Premier Sports, which isn't a good sign.

The Wednesday picks are weird, and might be a bit clearer when the league phase starts. Looks like RTE has first choice between them and VM, and then Premier seems like they can pick any match. Despite the fact that the same game will be on free-to-air tv, and also on TNT Sports.

With the centrally contracted phase kicking off today, here’s the blurb from Amazon about its coverage. It has the top pick in the UK on a Tuesday night, and its coverage should be available here too (in many cases, like tonight, this will probably be the same game Premier have gone for).

Shamrock Rovers and St Pats not happy with RTE, VM and Premier for none of them broadcasting any of their past and upcoming qualifying games.

Wonder why they're taking the stance on it. Virgin Media may not be fussed seeing they don't have Europa League and Conference League rights this year (of what we know). RTE would have normally showed at least one or 2 of these type of games before.

Generally the qualifiers aren’t being picked up for tv any more, here or in the UK, with most going onto club or league PPV services. To be honest I thought it was a strategic move by the clubs rather than because no one wanted to pick them up but if the latter really is the case, then can St Pats and Rovers really blame RTE in a summer where we had a later than usual Euros followed by the Olympics? Neither was going to be dropped and nor were RTE going to show sports in prime time on both RTE One and Two. Are they saying they’d have been happy with News Channel or Player only coverage scheduled right opposite these massive sporting events?

To be honest, the clubs have no case here, and absolutely, to single RTE on the basis they have some sort of obligation as a PSB to show these games - they don’t. VMTV, TG4, or Premier didn’t step up either.

Rovers at least will have six Thursday night prime time games on Premier Sports (and TNT) during the Autumn, and UEFA cash to boot, St Pats may still possibly make it too.

similar set up for Premier to their FAPL coverage, Eoin McDevitt, Shay Given, Kenny Cunningham in the studio, Con Murphy and Kenny Cunningham (again) on (obviously off tube) comms.

Prime are strictly whistle to whistle for this one.

And prime have the very welcome option of stadium FX instead of commentary.

Ah, but it’s nice to see Jon Champion get a regular UK commentary gig again - he was lead Premier League play by play commentator for Setanta and then ESPN for number of seasons but not retained by BT when they took over.

He's far from the worst yes. Could be useful for later in the campaign. I just can't warm to Shearer on commentary ( their choice on co comms for the season).

This article ( paywall) doesn’t contain much new but does tell us that Premier intend to show four games across Premier 1 & 2 on Thursday nights. They do say that if St Pats do qualify they will try to keep them apart, which tbh I thought UEFA normally tried to do for teams from the same city anyway. https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/2024/08/20/premier-sports-to-show-irish-teams-in-european-group-stages/

I presume that means the return of a seperate Irish version of Premier 2? Alternatively it could be done the old way, geoblock the coverage in the UK.
