I actually agree. Tesla got a lot of stick for the cybertruck and how it won’t meet EU regs etc, but IMO, that’s an American market product. Not designed for euro.

if this is true Musk is an even bigger scumbag than previously believed…

Well there were a few that someone tried to smuggle into Russia, so I wouldn't be surprised if a few made it

Also wouldn't be surprised if a one was offered to King Kadyrov, lord of Chechnya as tribute

Not sure I'm ready to believe Musk was aware or facilitated it. I mean he can't be that stupid surely?

We only have the word of the TikTok warrior in chief, who probably isn't the most reliable narrator

I believe several Starlink terminals were obtained by the Russians and there were some question marks about whether Elon gave them to them. However I think he got mostly absolved

Hopefully it gets sent to the front in Kursk, we'll get to see how it fares against a HIMARS strike 😂

there were 2 Cybertruck seized in Lithuania a few months ago trying to be brought over the border into Belarus… I believe it’s a common access route for getting sanctioned goods into Russia, though the Lithuanians are cracking down on it… the Cybertrucks were only on Lithuanian plates for a matter of hours before they tried to get them out of the country…

Wherever there's a trade barrier there'll always be enterprising souls willing to bypass them for money

I suppose to the likes of Kadyrov it'd be a status symbol to have the contacts and resources to be able to flout the law so blatantly

Regarding the Elon connection, I have a theory. I believe that strictly speaking you couldn't legally buy a Cybertruck in Russia because you can't make a transaction in dollars

It's kind of bizarre but in Putin's Russia you have to maintain some veneer of legality despite the blatant law breaking within his regime

So technically the only legal way you could get a Cybertruck in Russia is if you were gifted one

Anyway, it's just a theory and I'm sure Kadyrov wouldn't pass up an opportunity to stir up from sh!t

I also wouldn't be surprised if Elon responds soon with a "looks cool" to the CT with the gun on top without checking the poster 🤦🏻‍♂️

I'd doubt Elon is involved at all, as much of an absolute bell end he is. I'd imagine he only has fairly tertiary knowledge of who kadrov even is.

it’s on X so I assume It’s true 😂😂 maybe Elon should stop the spreading of fake news

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,676 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

I mean it's definitely a CT and that's definitely Kadyrov cosplaying as the bullet farmer from Mad Max on top

(Thanks to Denys Davidov for pointing that one out, got a good laugh from that one)

And sure Elon fired the whole content moderation team on Twitter (I'm still not calling it X) because they were stopping "free speech"

So I'm sure he's enjoying the fruits of his labour now 😂

He's a scumbag but he's no idiot. This is a deepfake no doubt

Far more plausible is that a Cybertruck was smuggled into Russia.

Couldn’t Musk have a blacklist of geolocations that are under trade restrictions? They could have their CT’s deactivate themselves in Russian territory. He does something similar already, where he had Starlinks stop working if the Ukrainians used them on drones.

once the sim card is pulled from a Tesla, it goes ‘off grid’

2 Cybertrucks were seized a few months back trying to be smuggled out of the EU (Lithuania) to Belarus (and most likely onto Russia)

Regarding Starlink, the US DoD wasn't too enthusiastic about a billionaire CEO being able to turn off what could be an important part of military communications, so they took over the contract

There's rumour the CT was either smuggled in from the UAE or one of the two that was caught in Lithuania, apparently they might have made it through in the end

I'm not sure Tesla can remotely disable a vehicle, sounds like the kind of thing that would get them into trouble with the regulators. For example, Tommy misses his loan repayment so his car gets disabled....on the motorway, causing a crash

They can probably disable supercharging and other services, not sure how many Superchargers are in Grozny to begin with so that probably won't affect Kadyrov. Honestly the truck is probably going to sit in a garage somewhere gathering dust like lots of other show off car collections

If Tesla wants to help, their best course would be to hand over whatever information investigators need to track down the smugglers

He might be “hurting” the brand here but in America they are still No. 1 selling EV in June.

It will balance out in time of course. BYD will make a big dent in the figures once they arrive.

America is very polarised. Musk has gotten a lot of Republicans on side with his recent support of a certain Convicted Felon. Those on the left were more inclined to drive electric anyway so he's literally put his eggs in 2 different baskets and enjoying the omelets

Its something that can already be done on cars like Tesla. For example, a user can remotely enable a PIN on their vehicle disabling it from driving when parked. Regardless, International Sanctions laws would trump vehicle regulation laws.

But yes, to @AndyBoBandy's point, if the smugglers were smart enough they would have disabled comms to the smuggled vehicles and/or GPS. Kadyrov might be able to drive to the frontlines with his tacticool Cybertruck but at least he wont be able to use Maps or get software updates on the way.

I am always suspicious when someone posts a very narrow range graph as it usually indicates that they have found a narrow data set that suits their blinkered agenda, and after seeing your graph and doing a bit of googling its confirmed that I was right to be suspicious.

Loads of news carrying the full story beyond your little graph, here is one such bigger picture which sums it up nicely:

"Tesla's sales volume dropped from 324,900 units in the first half of 2023 to 299,200 units this year. Meanwhile, overall BEV sales increased by 7.6 percent in the same period. As a result, Tesla's share dropped from 59.8 percent in 2023 to 51.2 percent in 2024. The company is still a dominant player in its home market, but it's worth noting that numerous competitors posted strong gains amid Tesla's losses. Hyundai increased 34 percent, while Ford saw a 48 percent increase. Rivian was even better at 77 percent, and Kia managed a 110-percent jump."

Next month when Tesla is down again you will probably post a graph showing Tesla dominating the sale of brown cars.

Not sure why you are annoyed at me posting a graph. It’s informative. Next month you’ll probably dismiss that graph too.

Here’s another graph to keep you happy 😁

Part of my wishes they'd drive it over to the frontline, just to see the thing get popped with a missile strike.

It'd be funny if they left the SIM card enabled since there's been several cases where Russian soldiers were using their personal phones, got traced and the Ukrainians dropped a HIMARS on them

This has gotten so bad that Russian soldiers can be imprisoned for having their phones on them near the frontline. So you could end up with Chechen soldiers blatantly disobeying the rules of the Russian army (on top of all the other crap they're doing)

I don't think this is realistically going to happen, since the TikTok warriors are well known for staying as far from the frontlines as possible

I'm going to say you both have a good point

It's pretty obvious that Tesla entered the price war and sales downturn with a very high profit margin and can afford to lose some customers. Even if Elon is hurting sales it'll take some time for that to become apparent

On the other hand, Tesla doesn't have an already profitable ICE car business to fall back on if EV sales dip. And it's becoming apparent that people are buying cars other than Tesla, causing them to lose market share

This comes at a time when Tesla was full throttle on expansion and has a lot of very expensive capital expenditure going on. It's pretty easy then to see why Elon pumped the brakes on several Gigafactory builds. Mexico and India I believe were being talked about and paused

So he probably did the right thing as a response to a drop in sales. Although his approach to surgical cost reduction seems to be to cut entire productive teams. Like I've said before this is most likely to just boost the share price and stop the shareholders from firing him

The more difficult question for him to answer is why market share is dropping when overall global EV sales are still increasing. Typically this is not the kind of news shareholders like hearing

It would be far funnier to just see the "bulletproof" cybertruck riddled with bullet holes since it's widely believed the bulletproof claims only stand up to 9mm ammunition…

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,615 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

If it’s factual that it can only withstand 9mm (I’m not sure, I don’t know tbh) then why would it be funny if it’s pierced by bigger rounds? Would that just be as expected?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,615 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

I’d class Tesla as the Honda or Toyota of EV’s personally speaking. I’d expect them to settle somewhere similar to them in the future with regards to sales.

Should've taken the time to get this mod kit

    https://electrek.co/2024/08/16/tesla-cybertruck-modded-electric-tank-for-military/

I dunno which is more depressing, the fact that this exists or that realistically in the US you could end up needing an armoured car for bringing the kids to school

Also they turned it into a hybrid with the generator in the frunk 🙄

Toyota are now going to use BYD to produce their future PHEVs. That's a massive consolidation between two of the worlds biggest producers.

The EU and US tariffs on the likes of BYD is only buying time. BYD could set up in Japan and sell into the EU under the recent EU/Jap tariff agreement on cars.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,615 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

BYD are building a plant within the EU so that should help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,676 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

Maybe, it's worth remembering that Toyota in particular got to where they are by making some very budget friendly vehicles while still preserving quality and economy

I'm not sure Tesla is really interested in that market, they've an image as sporty cars which they seem to want to preserve

I don't think it's an issue of costs or sales, I'm sure they could make a cheap mobile that would sell if they wanted to. I just reckon there's no interest in the company to do it

€38k I think is great value. But I agree they need something in the Yaris/Auris €20k range to broaden their appeal. And also stalks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,676 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

I'd forgotten about the indicator stalks 😂

Elon should get the boot for that alone 🤦🏻‍♂️

I could see a hot hatch Tesla doing very well in Europe. If they could hit the right balance of price, power and technology then it would be a real winner

I think the problem with the cheap hatchbacks is that they just don't seem to sell all that well. If you look at the sales stats it's always expensive CUVs topping the charts, so there isn't much motivation for automakers to put in a lot of effort on them

I just don’t think EVs can do a hot hatch. The rides to quiet and comfortable.
