Promotion in the civil service

hi all. I’m fairly new in the civil service and was wondering about promotions. I am currently a CO. This is my first public job so it’s all new to me.

As I understand, I can apply for an EO or HEO job after two years of service.

Problem is, I really like the department I am in now and I don’t want to change. If I go for a EO/HEO job down the line, will I be kept in the same department and office or will the job take me elsewhere?

I would just like a promotion in the role I am currently in. I wouldn’t fancy having to start again elsewhere

If you want to stay you should only apply for interdepartmental competitions.

This makes little sense

If they want to stay they should apply for internal competitions within the Department

Open or Interdepartmental competitions could lead to assignment elsewhere, although you can ask to be kept in Department.

Apply for open competitions you see for EO level and if you are successful at interview you can request to stay in your current Department.

You may still get offered another Department, but then you can decide based on what the offer is and stay put if it's not for you and you haven't lost anything.

Then after two years you are eligible for any internal EO competitions that are run or for PAS HEO competitions.

You say you want a promotion in the role you're currently in. Just to be clear it's a CO role you're currently in so if you get promoted you move into a different role.

Thats happened to a few mates of mine, they let their higher ups know theyve passed the interview and they asked could they stay where they were and got to

The thing you should also keep an eye out for and look into is getting the Higher CO scheme on Merit, in that you are still a CO but you are on a higher pay grade and may also be given more responsibility. This scheme is internal and so you will stay in the same department but possibly also the same team. It is unlikely that if you get promotion, even internally that you will stay in the same team unless they need someone of that grade.
