A nice away trip and a good team in Navan would be great. And hopefully the neutral venue game not in Croker!

    Nice performance from the U20s

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,294 ✭✭✭rrs

Was Sean Emmanuel involved with the U20s this year? He looked decent on the Minor winning team in 21

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,451 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Excellent performance, second half particularly. Éamonn Armstrong was incredible throughout. He has some engine on him, up and down the pitch for 60+ minutes and chipping in with 1-3 from half back. Jamie Murphy was equally excellent. His last point with the outside of the right boot was pure class.

Great that the successful minor team has carried the form through to the next level. Too often we've fallen flat at u20/21 level after excelling at minor level.

On the bench. rpurfield can probably confirm but I think he's still U20 next year as well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,294 ✭✭✭rrs

Armstrong had a brilliant game and probaly one of the youngest players on the field. Minor last year.

Hammer I'm pretty sure Sean is in his last year of U20, he was over age when 20s moved to 19s in the county last year. Great display last night, obviously biased but Jamie Murphy is a talent. He slotted right in with our first team last year as one of the better players, great to see him perform on the big stage like that. Eamonn Armstrong is unreal too, I reffed him at minor and 19s last year and thought he was good but I honestly think he's gone up a level too. He has an incredible engine on him.

Kerry, Louth & Monaghan (assuming no shocks in the Munster and Leinster finals).

Outside chance at second and a great chance of at least getting third.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,011 ✭✭✭enricoh

Never thought I'd see the day we get a decent draw. Our penance for 2010 must be over!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,872 ✭✭✭CrabRevolution

From 2013 to 2018, every time we could draw Tyrone, we did. Our run in 2019 was pleasant enough though; Offaly, Carlow, Laois in Leinster, before the inevitable hammering from Dublin, but then drawing Clare in the qualifiers.

A good draw for Meath this time. It's amusing seeing people trying to straddle two stools of simultaneously claiming Louth will be heavy favourites against us, but they're are also confident that we can compete with Kerry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭rpurfield

Yeah its a decent draw, I wonder will Louth now nominate somewhere else as the home venue or will we get two games in Navan. I'm a little bit disappointed we didn't get an away with a bit of decent travel though.

Anyone hear any reports of a challenge between Meath & Cavan the other evening? I’m hearing Meath won but it was a heavily biased Meath man told me that!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,011 ✭✭✭enricoh

How the f@#k did we manage to lose that? Hard to believe the misses at the end there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,803 ✭✭✭snowgal

heartbreaking for the u20s at the weekend, but we had so so many chances to draw and even win…hopefully we'll see a good crop of them coming through in the next few years…. anyone know when the dates and times will be announced for our games? I presume Louth will go with Iniskeen pitch? wonder will there be a struggle for tickets. Im looking at the gaa 3 for €50 offer at the mo..

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,451 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

U20s game was infuriating. But like at times with the seniors, we went too long at times between scores.

The ladies game was extremely disappointing. I thought that we'd put it up to Dublin given the number of changes compared to the previous week but we've evidently fallen far back in the pecking order.

Weird choice to play the Louth game in Inniskeen but it is Louth's choice I suppose. I'd say it'll likely be a sell out. Never been to Inniskeen but if it's anything like Scotstown where Monaghan used to play at times, the traffic is going to be an absolute disaster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,538 ✭✭✭dobman88

Having gone to Kerry league games in Inniskeen, the stewards are top class. They divert you away from the village and have parking along the road near the pitch, operating a 1 way system, (bar the odd gobsh!te) and then after you just go through the village.

Its a great system that works well when the alternative would be complete chaos.

Happy to see Kerry playing in Navan too. Will be great having our away game on up the road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,011 ✭✭✭enricoh

After seeing Kerry run through Monaghan next week could be best watched behind the couch. Will O'Rourke stay in for the third year ye reckon? Will it make any odds?!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,451 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

    I'm beyond caring anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,158 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

It doesn't matter. You could put pep guardiola in charge of Meath. As long as we're competing in Leinster against Dublin you'll never get a group of young lads to stick around or give it their all.

Any young lad coming through now was 4 when we last beat them and you'd have to be at least 27 to remember 2001. We're finished unless they take Dublin out of Leinster and let the province recover.

I have to say I'm happy for Louth. At least they've something worth celebrating beating us.

Just be thankful we enjoyed the good old day's before the GAA grovelled at Dublin's feet.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,451 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Despite the result, massive respect to Matthew Costello who played yesterday despite his father passing away earlier in the morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭rpurfield

I was in two minds about heading up as I knew it would be hassle for tickets etc then got asked to referee one of the LGFA league finals yesterday evening and that made my mind up for me. Yeah we're miles off Dublin, Kerry etc but there seems to be no progress from last year at all. I would have us a bit behind Louth in terms of development but not ten points behind. I really thought there'd be progress from last year but there isn't really its more of the same. The issue is much deeper rooted than the management or squad as its been like this for probably 12/13 years now. The most frustrating thing is the've had 5 weeks since the Dublin game, there was certainly a chance for finishing 2nd to Kerry in the group and the display yesterday is the response.

in my opinion we need to start looking at who is in county board, what their jobs are and are they anyway qualified to do them. if not then start looking at getting in professional advice on how to thinngs are done in the likes of tyrone or even mimic some of dublins good practice. i now firmly believe that we dont have the knowlodge or expertise in meath football circles to make the changes required for a good inter county team to flourish. if this was longford, rosscommon or monaghon you would be inclined to say why bother with a tiny population but thats not the case . we are a pretty much football only county with heading for a quater of a million population. but time is of the esscence now. we need to act before anymore apathy sets in. Apathy towards our football team is the enemy. it happened in both louth and cavan in 1960s for some reason, maybe older people could tell us what happened from those places.Louth were very dominant in leinster in 1940s and 50s . cavan from 20s to early 70s. almost 50 years of domination in ulster and got 5 sam maguires too. thats where were going. but we can stop the rot now. first id start questioning the people in county board id give them a few weeks to come back with a vison and blueprint for meath football ove the next 10 years. need to sort out whos there to pass the time and whos there to do a job. thats first staging post

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭rpurfield

And who runs this review? Turkeys don't vote for Christmas! As well as that they are advertising for a football performance lead and this is replace the chap that's doing it the last couple of years already. There's more GPOs and so on than ever. While I'm sure stuff can be improved, its always the case, its not like its not being done already

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,946 ✭✭✭Dickie10

well thats what id hope that this train has been set in motion from 2018 at least i think we knew then that the drubbings off dublin in 2014/16/19/20 were not just "off days". if these things are being done then thats a good help, id be inclined to go on information missions to tyrone and dublin and see what can be gathered. im sure in a county like meath with peopple from every county in ireland involved in football that there will be some links into the inner sanctum of these two counties.

"In all seriousness though, why isn't Jack O'Connor a starter for Meath. Only for him coming on in the Tailteann Cup final, Down would of beat Meath. He came on, took the fight to them and showed leadership, kicked some brilliant long points that inspired confidence around him and really sent Meath on their way. He steadied the ship and it was his presence and influence that won Meath that game, no one else.

Against Dublin, the only player playing with any leadership or intent, running at lads and being generally industrious. On the 4 or 5 times I've seen him, he's literally the only Meath player playing like how an inter-county player should be playing. Yet he seems to start on the bench and come on. Is there a specific reason that your only worthwhile player is resigned to the bench for the start of most matches?"

Posted this on another thread, but might get a better answer here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭rpurfield

Since yesterday I've seen Colm call for patience and also bemoaning the lack of quality at club level. On the first one how much patience do you need to show? There's been no progress since last year I honestly thought the extended run in the Tailteann would stand to the team in terms of having them together for training and confidence. In all honestly you could still have Andy Mc on the line and it would be no different.

On the club scene I obviously see enough of it and yeah, its probably a mixed bag at best. But I've also been around club games in Louth and the standard there is no better than in Meath, yet they can produce performances at county level. This might seem like I'm reacting to a defeat in a game we wouldn't win anyway, but in all honesty there hasn't been one performance this year you could say was good for the majority of the game. In fact in the championship its been four pretty poor ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,538 ✭✭✭dobman88

I went to the 2 County semi finals last year. 10-8 and 7-6 were the results iirc? That's diabolical for what should be the 4 best teams in the county going at it. Summerhill managed to put on a show in the final with 22pts but I didn't attend after the poor semi final showings.

If players get coached to play that way at their clubs, it's hard to switch it on in a county set up. You'd need a change from the top down but, from the outside looking in, it seems lads are too comfortable with their place on the county board and until something changes in there, nothing will change on the pitch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,635 ✭✭✭The Golden Miller

See there is no reason for Meath being as poor as they are. They should of got a Jim McGuinness or Mickey Harte when they were available, you'd see a huge difference in organisation and intensity, that's what Meath need. The talent is there, there's no excuse for them being so poor. They need a spark, a leader, something to click. The makings of a great team are there, completely rudderless!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭rpurfield

Listening to We Are Meath and the Chronicle podcast and there is a lot of talk of the poor Meath crowds at games. Given no-one even posted in here coming up to the Monaghan match are we too far gone in terms of apathy with the senior team? Personally I had loads of other stuff on so I couldn't fit the game in but part of that was I didn't see any reason to be excited about it as the team has been so poor this year. I'm not so sure the support is totally gone in the county, over the last few years the 20s this year, and when they were minor, and the ladies have brought good crowds when going well. Personally I think the issue with poor Meath crowds at games is the team needs to be giving us something to get behind.

I sort of answered my own question there but what do people think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,011 ✭✭✭enricoh

Not too bothered about playing the likes of Kerry, Dublin etc. but when we're getting beat by 10 by louth and drawing with fermanagh day 1 we are going nowhere.

Didn't expect to get promoted over Armagh n Donegal but thought we'd be next behind them.

Heard cathal o bric wants one more year with the 20's and would go senior then. I'd put up with another turgid year if this proves true.

Unsurprising but it's bizarre that we were knocked out of the championship two and a half months ago yet the county board couldn't bother making a decision and it was left to Colm.

Fair play to Colm for giving it a shot, but there was zero progress made. This season was the chance to build on the Tailteann win from last season but it just didn't happen for whatever reason. Finding it very hard to care who gets the job next. I don't think anyone can turn us around at this point. We don't seem to have a coherent plan to keep younger players involved and develop them properly after minor level meaning we lose them. It seems like we've the same old heads at the top of the county board year after year. I'd be amazed if we see any sort of progress in the next 10-20 years the way things are going.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,451 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Anyone been to any championship games? Seems to be an extremely open senior championship this year. Summerhill need to beat Donaghmore/Ashbourne or else they go into a relegation playoff. Dunshaughlin have already topped that group with a game to spare. Dunboyne are looking good having gotten over the ever stubborn Wolfe Tones at the weekend. St. Colmcille's and Simonstown both through with a game to spare in group C. Ratoath also in a bit of bother, needing a result against Rathkenny in the last game to get through.

I'd say we should have a good 5 or 6 teams thinking they have a shot this season.

Intermediate had a number of surprises with St. Pat's already out of contention after Cillian O'Sullivan got a last minute winner for Moynalvey. Kilbride taking the step up to Intermediate in their stride, hammering Walterstown.

What has happened to Dunboyne hurling? I remember them always being thereabouts in the 2000s, coming up short in the final several times. Now they're shipping massive defeats and looking very likely to be relegated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,972 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Yeah, not surprising that O'Rourke got the boot after this year; I can't say I'm sorry for him though, I always thought he was a sneery aul f*cker as a pundit. That said, he deserves credit for taking the job and at least giving it a go. It's more than can be said for some other pundits.

I know he's out of the picture now, but would Harte have been a good fit for Meath?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,538 ✭✭✭dobman88

seems like we've the same old heads at the top of the county board year after year

I've said the same a few times before. I was only playing in the lower divisions of the Premier championships but got completely sick of being messed around year after year by the CB. They come across as completely shambolic.

A shake up like they had in Offaly and reset everything is required for Meath but it won't happen with those currently in charge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,256 ✭✭✭LeoB

I have great respect and time for Colm and Meath football. I for one of many Dubs think he was making progress albeit slowly. It appears some people were muddying the waters on him for the last year

You have to look at where Meath were at. They have some very good players but Physically seem way behind and when Colm spoke about a 5 year project he was right. They were doing well but it seemed to me the legs just went. They done a serious amount of training and really a lot of them have had no break for over 2 years. The base where Colm was coming from was very low and to develop the players physically and mentally were his biggest challenges. They certainly have ability. I dont think all the players fully bought into it and some thought with Colm and Sean involved success would follow.(That was a serious problem in Dublin from 1993 for a decade). From talking to a few Meath lads a serious overhaul of coaching and especially the juvenile coaching structures also needs to take place.

I dont know where Meath go from here. The county board have serious questions to answer as to why as you say it took so long and put pressure on him 2 days before a Co Board meeting. Whoever comes in will have similar problems.

I hope 2025 will see a resurgence in Meath football. The GAA need it and so do Dublin.

    SFC Quarter Finals

    Dunshaughlin v Ratoath

    Simonstown v Wolfe Tones

    Dunboyne v Summerhill

    Skryne v St. Colmcilles

Very interesting pairings. 3 derbies, repeat of last year's quarter final where Dunshaughlin contrived to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and a chance for Cilles to break their quarter final duck or for Skryne to make their first semi final since 2016.

    IFC Quarter Finals

    Bective v Navan O'Mahonys

    Ballivor v Oldcastle

    Kilbride v Meath Hill

    Castletown v Moynalvey

Hard to tell who are favourites in Intermediate. Oldcastle had a big win against Moynalvey but Moynalvey were guaranteed to be through anyway. Kilbride will fancy their chances against Meath Hill despite losing to NOM (would there be a bigger population difference in any game this year?). You'd expect NOM and Oldcastle to have enough for Bective and Ballivor respectively.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,451 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

    Kildalkey v Trim

    Ratoath v Kilmessan

Looking likely that it'll be another Kildalkey/Trim SHC win. We've had so many near misses in senior hurling finals, if I had to choose, I'd pick a hurling championship win over a football one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,946 ✭✭✭Dickie10

i think Ratoath will win the hurling this year. i fancy Trim to pip kildalkey in semi final. Kildalkey have an atrocius record v trim in semi finals over the last few years 2018,2020 and 2022 Trim beat them all in semi finals.

    Upgrade in senior management.

Robbie Brennan is set to be named as the new Meath senior football manager on a three-year term.

The Kilmacud Crokes boss will be recommended to the executive by the committee charged with finding a successor to Colm O’Rourke.

Brennan’s management team will include former Tyrone All-Ireland winning player and coach Joe McMahon, plus ex-Monaghan and Cavan coach Martin Corey.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,451 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

First time since 2016 that neither Ratoath nor Summerhill will be in the semi finals. Also the first time since then that Skryne have made it this far. Skryne will play Tones while Dunboyne play Dunshaughlin in the semi finals. Dunshaughlin now favourites with the bookies. Some fall and rise for them given that they were only relegated in 2021. Luke Mitchell and Matthew Costello got 3-8 between them on Saturday.

Ballinabrackey somehow contrived to lose their relegation quarter final against Kells. They were 10 points up at half time but Kells took them to extra before winning by 3. Bracks will play Rathkenny while Seneschalstown play Curraha in the relegation semi finals.

O'Mahony's look like they'll be massive favourites for intermediate with both Oldcastle and Moynalvey getting knocked out in the quarter finals. It's them against Castletown and Meath Hill vs. Ballivor in the other. Drumbaragh against BHG and Nobber vs. Walterstown in the relegation semi finals.

Clann na nGael vs. St. Vincent's and Slane vs. Dunsany in the Junior semi finals. You'd think the winners of the Athboy - Vincent's semi final would be favourites for the final.

Carnaross against Kilmainhamwood and Moynalty vs. St. Mary's in the Junior B semi finals.

61 years and we're finally Senior Hurling Champions again! Thought we were throwing it away (again) when Trim got the goal and then again when we let them back into it after the second goal. Sounded like we deserved it in the end. Sweet victory after three successive final defeats.

Didn't make it to the match itself but was listening to it on LMFM. Jesus, it was as if someone had died when the final whistle went. "Trim have lost" was the first thing they said followed by over 5 minutes of complaining about the referee. Was over 5 minutes after the final whistle before they really gave any credit to Ratoath for beating the favourites.

Saw the replay of the last minute controversy, and it looked like Toher was fouled and then threw himself into the box to try and guarantee the penalty. Referee consulted the umpires and changed the decision, as is his right. Definitely wasn't a stonewall penalty.

Congrats Hammer, deffo think its a silver lining to the footballers going out earlier than usual this year. I think even at club level lads doubling up with hurling and football is too much of a stretch. Enjoy the celebrations, they're long overdue!!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,451 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Meath Hill win the Intermediate championship for the first time in their history, beating Navan O'Mahonys after extra time. Some amount of work been put in up there to solidify their place in Intermediate after going up in 2017 and then to gradually build year after year towards the title.

Senior final tomorrow will likely be played in dreadful conditions which will surely suit Tones down to the ground. Would be some conclusion to a bonkers few years for Dunshaughlin if they won, having only been relegated 3 years ago.

Dunsany yet again go to the well for their first ever adult championship title tomorrow. This will be their 8th time in the junior final since the turn of the century having lost all 7 previous finals.

Our minor footballers won their fourth minor title against NOM yesterday.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,451 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Dunsany finally get over the line in the Junior championship. Hard luck to Vincent's but it's hard not to be delighted for Dunsany having experienced so much heartache in finals over the last 20+ years.

Dunshaughlin are senior football champions, winning by 2-7 to 1-8. Costello got the winning scrambled goal with only a couple of minutes left after a shot was massively held up by the wind. Costello's loose free in defence resulted in Cian Ward's goal less than 10 minutes earlier so it was redemption for him. Overall a very deserved win for Dunshaughlin having had a tough, unbeaten run to the championship, beating each senior champion since 2018 on the way.

Anyone able to tell me what the story is with Dunshaughlin wearing black and red, instead of black and amber?
