Final grand slam of the year.

The men's side is looking like a three-way shootout between the top three ranked players.

Djokovic is coming in on the high of finally winning the Olympic gold medal. Alcaraz has to rebound from the disappointment of 'only' winning silver, whilst Sinner is coming to New York with a cloud hanging over his name.

On the women's side, Pegula is the one coming to New York with the best form, but still rather difficult to see her getting over the line. Gauff seems to have fallen apart somewhat since the Olympics, real work to do if she wants to defend her title. Swiatek is world #1 but has proven to be beatable outside of RG. Sabalenka, meanwhile, looks to have rounded into form at the best time. Osaka is a possible wildcard to win, but will have to get past a very tough opener against Ostapenko.

Let's see how it all plays out!

Djokovic will most likely drop to #4 after the US Open.

Alcaraz is my pick for the men's side. Sabalenka is the hot favourite for the women's side, but don't discount Osaka if she can get past Ostapenko.

Ostapenko vs Osaka tomorrow is a potential blockbuster, but it could just as easily turn out to be a complete anti-climax.

The speeding up of the courts should favour the likes of Sabalenka. Have the volume control at the ready …

Thiem has played his final GS match. When was the last year that this many former top players have retired?

And now Diego. There's nobody left apart from Stan :(

Tsitsipas lost tight looking first set to Kokkinakis.

Auger-Aliassime out played in first set to Mensik (very impressive at just 18)

Yeah you're right, Osaka-Ostapenko will either be a classic or a hot mess with no in between. Hopefully the former though!

FAA loses in straight sets to Mensik.

Osaka - Ostapenko will follow Collins - Dolehide (who must both have some Irish blood), which has gone to a third set. There was a 17-minute game in the second set.

Need help to watch the US Open. My friend has special needs and is a tennis fanatic. Her tv has broken and she's having a meltdown because she can't watch it. I've tried to log into Sky Sports with her details but it doesn't recognise them either on laptop or mobile. How can I salvage this for her? Is my option a subscription for Now TV for the month for €17 which gives me:

Unlimited TNT Sports & Premier Sports

Can she watch the tennis with this package? I only need a one month sub. Will this work?

I was wondering would Osaka wear that bright green riggout while playing but she isn’t.

This as other could be a classic or a scrappy mess.

The sky sports + for the tennis is very handy. If there was an ability to watch on demand that would help given it’s the US open and that matches will be overnight.

I'm trying to log in on my sky with her details but no luck. Won't recognise the log in. Can I get the tennis on Now TV?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,423 ✭✭✭✭josip

Tsitsipas went on to lose that match. Can't see the same happening to Sinner even though he's also lost the first set.

Thanks but can't go down the VPN route in case it stops working on her. She's no good with technology so need a simple solution. I won't be with her when she's watching it and don't need 20 phone calls a day when it doesn't work!

Will the Now TV sub work?

I saw a video where they were talking about the courts bubbling and little holes appearing in the court, and having to relay the court.

Also, it looks as warm and humid as its forecast.

Dan Evans 4-5 down in the fourth set.

Evans is two set to one up.

Dan Evans making bits of his racket.

    medical time out shenanigans?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,698 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Dan Evans looks to be going out. He’s 0-4 in the final set.

This is now the longest match in US Open history.

Evans wins on his 3rd match point!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,698 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

    well fair **** Dan Evans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭klr87

I pity some of the players on the adjoining courts. Fernandez and Potapova are deep in the 3rd set of their match (excellent contest BTW), but the sounds from next door were deafening.

That was some comeback by Evans, fair play to him, he has always been a fighter on the court. Had to laugh at the commentator saying how Evans had to rebuild his career from the ground up a few years and never mentioning why?

I see Raducanu lost to Kenin in 3 sets, I wonder if Raducanu is interested in playing on the tour? She didn't play in any of events leading up to this because she would have to play qualifiers for them which seems a bit arrogant, especially after she missed a year with injury. Just wondering if she would prefer to be at university rather than having to slog it out on the WTA tour.

If she'd prefer to be at university than playing pro tennis she's an idiot.

Going to university for 99% of people not the wonderful life changing experience movies and tv portray it as, its just a glorified version of secondary school.

Comfortable wins for Draper (likely Alcaraz next!) and Machac (very impressive against Korda)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,555 ✭✭✭Augme

Good win for Jordan Thompson in 3 sets over Hurkacz. Rybakina had to withdraw and her qualifier opponent through to the thirs round. Her grandslam record was 0-5 before this tournament. Katie Boulter out in the second round too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭ledwithhedwith

seems an odd question? She’s ranked 70 in the world , won 18 out of 30 matches. She’s also won eh a grand slam

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,540 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

Alcaraz gone in straight sets. Couldn't believe it when I saw the result this morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    Big shock alright!

Reports using the words erratic and error strewn...

I would say maybe he needed a bit of a longer break after the Olympics tbh

I haven't seen it but Alcaraz has those kind of sets in him in most matches he plays, looks like he strung 3 of them together this time though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,423 ✭✭✭✭josip

Last year Alcaraz's form dropped after Wimbledon and he didn't win another tournament. Maybe he's got too high an intensity game to be able to keep it up for a whole year. Someone here compared him to a puppy during Wimbledon.

De Minaur looks best placed to benefit from Alcaraz's (and Hurkacz's) early exit. There's a path to a Grand Slam semi final there for him. A run which would help cement his place in the top 8 in the Race to Turin. Before the US Open, he'd have been looking over his shoulder at Tsitsipas who also bombed out early.

A good chance for Jack Draper to make the quarter finals of a grand slam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭klr87

Surprising that he lost so early, and so badly. But he apparently doesn't like fast hard courts*, and the USO courts are faster this year than they have been for some time.

*Odd for someone who has won the last two Wimbledons, but there it is.

Djokovic down a set and a break to Popyrin..

    Now two sets

    Djokovic gone as well

    Djokovic gone in 4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭klr87

That's a shocker. I guess Djokovic put everything into winning the Olympics, and had nothing left in the tank, mentally anyway. It's like 2016: After he finally won the French, he lost in the 3rd round at Wimbledon to Querrey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,540 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

Sinner winning (which looks very likely now) would surely be a PR nightmare for tennis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Draper playing very solidly against van de Zandschulp two sets up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,540 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

Just saw that the wheelchair tennis isn't on at the US Open this year due to the clash with the Paralympics and this has happened a few times before as well.

Poor form if you ask me, surely they could have organised the wheelchair event for last week to give the players the opportunity to play a US Open and Olympics.

Draper very comfortable in the end Machac next, could be fun!

Zverev will be nr 2 after this tournament

Watched the first set and a half of Evans vs De Minaur thought Evans was competitive but De Minaur always seemed to have a bit more. Seen the score this morning 6-3, 6-7, 6-0, 6-0 to De Minaur, can only guess that Evans finally ran out of steam in the final 2 sets.

Zverev has a good chance of winning this, he is on the opposite side of the draw to Sinner and Medvedev. Even though Sinner is looking very strong but Medvedev might catch him.

Coco Gauff as truly horrific tonight, incredible number of double faults and unforced errors particularly on her forehand.
