    Hi All,

Hoping to view an insignia over the next few days, it's got relatively low mileage (130k km) and a regular dealer service interval, the car looks in good shape and is being sold with 6 months warranty, I just don't know a lot about these cars so hoping for any advice on what to look for outside of the usual stuff.

    Thanks in advance!

A 2016 Insignia with 130,000 wont be long before becoming a money pit.

Serious heaps of junks altogether when they hit a certain mileage.

Turbos, intercooler pipes, cooling system just spring leaks for no reason - usually the reservoir is cracked, you fix that and it moves to the next weakest point and so on.

Oil light will probably come on around 140 - 150 kms - oil pick up seal will need replacing - depending on the gearbox in it its could be a 200 euros job or a 1000 euro job.

Clutches, flywheels - the list goes on.

I wouldnt buy a brand new Insignia never mind a used one.

Theres better , more reliable estates out there.

Bazz - didnt think youd pick a Peugeot :)

"Warranty is with a 3rd party company" - Probably mapfre - which you may as well not have any warranty!!!

Any of the other 3 would be good buys - Id probably got for the Avensis - you cant kill one of those.

My thoughts on Peugeots are probably the same as the Insignia!!!

If you go for a mondeo you're much better off getting a 2014 high spec over a 2015 onwards, MK4 is a better car imo and MK5 has more common problems High pressure pump, EGR cooler, suspension bushes, that the MK4 doesn't have, and in 2014 at the end of the MK4 production Ford have ironed out a lot of issues they had when it first came out in 2007.

Mondeo mk4 were a great car, had one for close to ten years and only had minor issues with it. Although watch for under body corrosion in these cars and rear suspension arms and bushings they sometime fail NCT for these

Depending on budget you could pick up one of the hybrid Corolla or Honda Shuttle.

Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback!

If folk are willing to help suggesting further, we're looking for something that is capable of towing a small caravan about 900kg, I know most vehicles are capable of that but I'd like to future proof it a bit in case we upgrade, so hoping something capable of towing 1300kg and over.

Willing to look at estates (obviously), saloons and SUVs

Probably needs to be diesel really for the high torque, and budget is about 13k

Thought that myself about the Peugeot but have seen a few 508's advertised and have been wondering am I doing them a disservice?

Had been looking at Avensis of that age but from looking the fantastic reputation for reliability seems to be more true of the previous generation of Avensis? Definitely don't seem to see as many mega mileage examples with the newer engine, which I think is reengineered N47 BMW one.

Good thread, have been looking around for possible estate for a good while now as need more space for the kids.

I'm gonna buck the trend here and just let you know i have a 2011 insignia SRI with 308,000kms on it and its still going strong.

I've recently got the clutch and flywheel done on it, but that's to be expected on any diesel with that much mileage on it i reckon.

Ill admit, maybe i just got lucky?

I find it a comfortable car for motorway mileage and its a fairly nice place to be.

I'm very disappointed by the bad review above, it looks a great car visually to my tastes, nice spec level and has a hitch with what I thought was low mileage, would love to hear if anyone else has positive experiences, but if the above is true it seems a risk

For transparency I was a service manager in an Opel / Honda dealer for a few years and my experience with them hasnt been the best. Dont get me wrong they are really comfortable and a lovely drive its just that I have probably seen the worst of what they can offer - and its always been around that 130 - 150 kms mark that the issues start to arise.

You could be lucky like tom1ie (how the civic going since the last time we spoke??) or you could buy a money pit that will start giving problems a week after you buy it -Yes the same could be said of any used car but my personal experience is that these are more prone to stupid failures than other makes / models and are more expensive to repair.

Hi hellrazer, the civic hasn’t missed a beat!
Really nice car and I bought a dongle to pair up the phone to get Apple car play remotely as the lack of wireless Apple car play was annoying.
The only other thing I wish it had was cruise control aswell as ACC as I find ACC cuts in too far away from the car in front on motorways.

Anyway I won’t hijack this thread further!

I drove mine until the gear stick/ clutch went.

I bought with similar mileage if I recall, and when she was towed away she had done 350k or so, so I cant really complain I guess.

    Good points:

    Very comfortable car

Hi Spec - lots of gadgets - some of which I found by accident only after a few years driving.

Decent space in the boot ( but because of the tapered end of the boot not as much as you think)

Bad points ( for my car at least)

Constant fault on the headlights -( it had the fancy auto dip/ turn around corner/ somehow knew you were on a motorway or country road and adjusted the light angle accordingly headlight kit) Greeted virtually every morning with this fault. constant resetting myself then I gave up. Apparently a known fault with the module. You'd need to replace the hole lighting set apparently.

Failed the NCT twice over it, (even though the lights passed the test themselves) only to go back a few days later when it was bright and the lights weren't needed so the fault stayed off.

One light eventually stopped working - bulb replace 60 euros (????!!!!!) but it was the whole head that was broken - replacement cost ? 700 euros !!! Thankfully it was just when the days were getting bright and i didn't need the dipped beams. Then the clutch went and i got rid of her.

Other things that went towards 'the end'

    Glow plugs a few times

Battery died - cant remember the cause though ( it was mechanical - not me leaving the lights on or anything)

Drivers Heated car seat stopped working altogether

Windscreen wipers - sometimes the auto sensor didn't work and couldn't be manually overridden. cue me pulling up at the side of the road to crank the wipers into use and keep them on constantly.

    Horn ( No sniggering)

For some reason i could never warm to that car!
