Toyota Yaris Cross? Probably the most reliable car you can buy in this segment

Helping an elderly relative to the same thing and I reckon just the basic Yaris would do. The Yaris cross is a bigger car and if their skill is diminishing it's better they're in the smaller version.

Dacia sandero is a good option too.

A 1.5 hybrid is better than a 1 litre petrol in every way possible

Hyundai Kona and Kia Stonic are both available with a 1.0 litre petrol engine. Renault Captur available in 1.0 litre also.

All those small engines these days have a turbo however which makes them more complex and less reliable than the slightly larger engine with no turbo they replaced.

A juke is way uglier than an Ignis too.

Personally I think the Suzuki Ignis looks class.

konas are lovely, powerful to for a 1 liter

Definitely go for automatic. My mum changed to auto when she was in her 70's and wished she had changed years earlier.

Plenty of choice out there.

Forget "looks". Go for what they find easiest to get in and get out of. If not too tall, the Juke is good.

So I'd initially try getting in and out of several models and see what the seating position feels like and then whittle it down to 2 or 3 targets. Then look for the year/price within the budget.

Some people here advise against choosing a car with a small turbo charged engine. Particularly second hand ones. They are absolutely correct. The last thing your parents need are expensive engine problems.

The Fiat 500 is a small car with a high seating position.
