I see our LG TV now have a "Live" option on RTE Player app. But none of our Google TVs have it. You can stream to the Google TV. But wondering why the Apps are so different?

Same here on a LM6370, opening graphic white as against the previous red logo

No such update on Walker tv or Now stick.

Live TV channels option now also available on RTE Player via Samsung smart tv's. Picture quality superb I have to say.

Also, the RTE News channel appears to be in HD, which is good news, maybe they are finally putting a bit of effort into it.

I see they are giving you the option to sign in now but when you try it says invalid request 🙃🙃

Not live on my JVC Android Smart tv yet!

Yeah Android TV seems to be late to the party. The streams do look good on my LG and seem stable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

The video quality looked great on the LG. Never thought I'd say that about the player..

In my home, a Sony Android TV has no live channels on the RTE Player app however the Apple TV app does.

The quality has improved on the live channels, RTE One appears marginally better than on Saorview - but need to watch it a bit more to see how it performs with different content. RTE News Now is in some unusual stretched aspect ratio with black border top and bottom. Was not HD.

This is one of the problems with the RTE Player app - each device (smart TVs, streaming boxes, tablets, phones) - all have different experiences and even different content on them.

I wonder when or if Android smart tvs will be updated!

The Apple TV app has supported live streaming since at least mid-2022, it’s not new.

Not sure what the minimum spec to run the app is but I’ve been running it on a 4K (1st generation) and HD both running tvOS 17.

Did you have to log in to have "Live TV"?

My Samsung (2016 model) doesn't have the Live feature, the Software Version is V.2.2.21

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭galtee boy

No, I didn't sign in, my tv is a 2019 Samsung Q90. It always had the RTE Player, but no live channels until about 10 days ago. I saw here that someone said their LG had got the live channels option, so that made me check my Samsung and sure enough, the live channels option had been added.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭galtee boy

Out of curiosity, anyone know why the adverts are cut off during the add breaks on the RTE channels via the live option on the Player ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 265 ✭✭brick man

I have a 2017 Samsung and don't have live option yet and I reinstalled the app

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,922 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

I’m not sure and until recently, continuity (idents, promos etc) also removed - it’s been reinstated since the new year or thereabouts. Up until late last year two fairly annoying break fillers were used on RTE One and 2 - they’ve now been replaced by a much less annoying but a bit bizarre one featuring red triangles flying about the place.

    I have three theories.

    • Firstly they may simply want to sell different advertising on the Player feed
    • Secondly the same feed appears to be used to populate the catch up content on the player and they need to remove the adverts for that.
    • Thirdly the hated (well by me anyway) pre roll adverts would put the channel over its allowed advertising minutage if the normal adverts were left in.

not working for me even with an january 2024 update. there is no option for live tv

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,944 ✭✭✭JDxtra

They’re missing a trick not showing targeted ads during the live ad breaks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,038 ✭✭✭10000maniacs

RTE haven't a clue about multimedia. They do themselves no favours.

Even on the internet, the RTE player sucks.

I wanted to watch a 3 minute segment of the Late Late show.

So they have 3 minutes of ads before the Late Late Show actually starts.

Then you navigate to the actual segment you want. Guess what!!

Another 3 minutes of ads. The same bloody ads.😕

Another reason why people don't pay the licence fee.

    Idiots.

For what it's worth, ITVx is riddled with adverts too.

I bought a new Samsung TV last month it doesn't have the live option on the RTE player anyone know what could be the reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 887 ✭✭✭decor58

It seems to vary between the various manufacturers, I have it on an LG but not on Toshiba or Walker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

None on Sony either just on the LG.

But you can stream live from the android app to the TV if it doesn't have it.

I'll say saorview is better than streaming for big events like matches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭galtee boy

That's strange, my 2019 Samsung Q90R has the live channels on the RTE Player, but this option was only added in January of this year. Maybe update the software on the set ? or delete the app and re install ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 250 ✭✭Banjo Carney

I updated the software already I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Might depend on the OS version of the TV. Very weird that RTE have different versions of their app.

Shockingly bad app and streaming service for 2024

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,769 ✭✭✭BandMember

Why am I only learning of this now? 🤣 Works on my Samsung and the picture quality is perfect, so am delighted!

  • Registered Users Posts: 47 parisee88

I have a jvc smart tv so I updated the app on my phone and reopened the app on my tv then went up to the left hand corner of the phone app and hit that button to allow it to share or mirror the content with my tv so can watch rte live now!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

For me Saorview is better quality than the player "live" also the live lags quite a bit behind saorview. I mean live is handy I use it a fair bit. But for big events I'll hook up saorview.

Why won't rte player work on my Samsung tv

    Uninstalled it

    Reinstalled

    Nothing

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,661 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

It's not working on my Samsung TV either.

The TV is only 6 days old, so not like it's out dated!! 😯

  • Registered Users Posts: 250 ✭✭Banjo Carney

Not working at all or not showing live programmes ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,682 ✭✭✭beggars_bush

Message on screen saying rte player won't be supported on Samsung tv running older software from Aug 20th

I've updated everything on the tv software wise

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

    Just stream from your mobile.

    The worlds worst streaming app.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,661 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

It wouldn't work at all. Eventually after deleting it and reinstalling it for the umpteenth time, it eventually came to life.

Same here, 2017 Qled, there's no newer TV software updates available via the menu. Deleting and reinstalling app to the bar not doing anything. The version offered is December 2023, which is obviously not the latest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,978 ✭✭✭deezell

Just went on the Samsung site, there is a new f/w version 1401.1 for my 2017 Qled, dated May 2024. My current version from Dec 2023 is 1400. Funny how the auto update didn't pick it up, but then the TV was a pre brexit UK import from the good old days, no knowing what updates are allocated to different regions. I've downloaded the 1.5GB image onto a USB, I'll give it a lash tomorrow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 250 ✭✭Banjo Carney

Mine works alright but no live TV on it. @deezell let us know how you get on and if it works has it live TV. Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,978 ✭✭✭deezell

    No joy, the TV f/w update and reinstall of RTE Player produced no result. Same dead player message. I reset the Smart hub to clear it out, then logged out and resigned into my Samsung account in order to reload the App. Nothing, though I managed to wipe 'Her' Youtube history (she operates in Guest, My YT history is fine), so I'm in the doghouse into the bargain. Which TV software versions are in the bin? The answer is Tizen 1 to 3. I cant find an easy answer to which one is on my set, but as V4 was released in May 2017, it's a fair bet that all 2017 Samung Tvs, sold well into 2018. are probably running on Tizen 3 so are doomed. Heres RTE Player support reply;

Thank you for emailing RTÉ Player. As part of our ongoing commitment to delivering the best possible user experience and embracing the latest technology advancements, we periodically evaluate our product and support services. As of 20th of August we, along with other app providers, will no longer operate or be able to provide updates or support for devices running WebOS 3 or below on LG and Tizen 3 or below on Samsung. Can you confirm your TV operating system is above Tizen 3?

    **What This Means for You:**

    1. **End of Updates:** Starting from Aug 20th, your TV, with Tizen 3 or below, will no longer operate or receive RTÉ Player app updates as it won't be supported.
    2. **Customer Support:** While our user support teams will remain available to answer any questions and help with general queries, technical support specific to these operating systems will no longer be available.

So the set is obsolete If you can't just flick back to watch a missed program. Player live wasn't an issue for us, as theres no great advantage other than maybe pause. With Virgin Media player, (soon to be just VM Play), live is a bonus, as it's in HD which VM on Saorview isn't.

Just spotted the same message on my Samsung 2016 TV (K series), and the same message has come up on my sister's Samsung 2017 TV (M series). I wonder are Samsung's 2018 models affected too (N series)?

    Does this help ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,978 ✭✭✭deezell

Samsung didn't deploy Tizen 4 on Smart Tvs until 2018, given that it was only released May 2017. I bought my set last thing in 2017 in time for Xmas, it remained on sale well into 2018. I'd assume anything after seried M would be Tizen 4. My set is QE55Q60FAM, I presume the last digit is the model year designation, sometime in 2017, sold well into 2018.

    Timeline here https://developer.samsung.com/smarttv/develop/specifications/general-specifications.html

for all sorts of stuff, Tizen 4 is 2018, but when in 2018 is unclear, I couldn't say whither a new model had it very early in 2018 or much later.

  • Registered Users Posts: 250 ✭✭Banjo Carney

So are we saying a six year old Samsung tv will receive no further updates. How does this compare with android TVs how long would they receive updates for does anyone know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,978 ✭✭✭deezell

If lack of updates eventually prevents new features that's inevitable, but breaking existing features that worked is hard to take. Its RTE who is withdrawing Tizen 3 compatible player app, and I assume compatible server, but they're blaming Samsung.

Samsung have actually made a statement on support, as they intend dropping Tizen. They said that all 2024 Tizen sets will get updates for 7 years. Since I bought my set Samsung have broken the browsers webcam/embedded video stream ability in 2019, (with an irreversible update), VM player via TV browser no longer works, and now Rte player by browser or app is dead. Nice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

The problem is not Android TV. But RTE player seems to have a multitude of versions.

Only my Non Android TV the LG has RTE with Live feature enabled. My android TV devices don't. My android phones do. So I stream from a phone to the TV to get around this. It the only Android TV app I use that is different on different devices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭galtee boy

And keep in mind, RTE are supposed to launch a completely new RTE Player sometime in 2025, so God only knows what tvs or devices will be compatible with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 887 ✭✭✭decor58

RTEplayer app has been updated on Toshiba tv, been away for a few days, so I don't know when, so LG, Walker and Toshiba all have the live version app, running 4 Olympic streams at the moment. Still no sign of VM player or play on these 3 brands, VM player is on Now stick, player v play version.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,978 ✭✭✭deezell

Try the web browser version of VM play on these TVs . There never was a VM player app for my Samsung, but the Internet browser version used to work, until they updated to VM Play.

  • Registered Users Posts: 367 ✭✭doney84

Virgin Media Player now available on my LG tvs. It's not the new Play version though and the live channel streams only play the ads. The on demand stuff is working.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 962 ✭✭✭waywill1966

My JVC android smart tv has updated the rte player app and is now showing as available the live channels!
