Well completely Clouded over here in Leitrim. Cool wind blowing. Basically summer.

It's been Autumn since July 2023! Cloudy calm morning in South Wicklow but pleasant enough. Going to get the lawns cut today hopefully, start of hedge and tree cutting season now too so lots of outdoor work to be done. Hopefully the relatively dry trend for the east continues.

One of my favourite times of the yr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

I shouldn’t be disappointed but I am. The “heatwave” is actually a glorious late summers day yesterday and the grey slate and the breeze today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,387 ✭✭✭highdef

Dull, cool and breezy in longford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 630 ✭✭✭glightning

But at least it's more appropriate for the season! 🤣

Dull and murky kind of day in Cork, poor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,236 ✭✭✭appledrop

Went to Howth today, brilliant new playground for the kids.

A very meh day weather wise very dull and grey but on plus side not windy thankfully and mild enough that a light jacket did the job.

As evening set ina mist rolled in from the sea.

What a weird grey day, after that glorious day yesterday for outdoor gathering in Wicklow. Was super.

Needed lights on cars at 5pm. Mind you most rear lights absent but all front daytime running lights on in rearview mirror on M50.

Tonight is grey, dull and night closing in. No rain. Must be for the early hours of tomorrow.

Was in Howth today aswell ,doing the walk around the coastal area. Was very dull would have been lovely on a sunny day. But at least it was dry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,696 ✭✭✭Darwin

A strange grey day alright, but I appreciated the cloud cover to tackle a hedge pruning job after all the summer growth. Looks like a mild night ahead with minimums of 15c here (SW Laois).

I love autumn as well but proper autumn. Not the grey slate muck that's become year round default in this country.

We had two weathers today in Tralee. I sat out for a sunny breakfast this morning and then got two washes dry on the line. Very warm, alternating between hazy and direct sunshine. It was only fabulous. Got cloudier as the day went on but still very warm and then at 5PM came the rain. The real, horrible Irish rain and you could feel the temperatures drop simultaneously. Slate grey after that, mini heatwave over. So frustrating that summer 2024 can't deliver more than 2/3 days max and will autumn 2024 be the same? I very much hope not. I'm not a fan of RTE but going to tune into RTE evening weather to see how this week pans out according to their charts. Hoping to head up west at the end of the week but won't do it in the usual muck weather. Not at Irish hotel /restaurant prices.

Ah snap, wasn't it very busy and it wasn't even sunny, must have been absolutely jammed yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,022 ✭✭✭adocholiday

Incredibly humid evening in South Wicklow. The patio is wet with condensation and walls of the house are wet to the touch. We had this during the warm weather last September too, makes sitting outside a little unpleasant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,277 ✭✭✭OldRio

Wet morning but mild 13C at 7am.

    Leitrim

Dull morning, mild. Looks like being a damp day and a pretty non-descript week of weather ahead, N Kildare

MT's forecast always seems to be the opposite of what weather apps are saying for later in the week (Not intended as a criticism of them). I guess it's a timing thing.

    Lashing down in Arklow atm

    Rain rate of 20.6mm/hr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,338 ✭✭✭pureza

Some snow/Glaciers on the Swiss Alps yesterday from 32,000 ft

Miserable morning in Dublin as well.

Really can't say I share the enthusiasm many seem to have for autumn, to me I just associate it with increasing darkness, increasing wind and rain, increasing cold etc. Basically everything I hate about our climate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭Needmoretea

Sounds lovely, and Howth is one of my favourite parts of Dublin. Even on a dull and cool day the place is usually crammed. Funnily enough it seemed warmer yesterday than Saturday, even though it was sunny on Saturday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,338 ✭✭✭pureza

Pouring down in Arklow now at 35mm/hr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

desperate morning in the city centre. Plenty of tourists around all looking happy to be “escaping” the heat and sun in Europe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,338 ✭✭✭pureza

22mm now in Arklow, getting close to an inch in old money

20mm of that in the last 2hrs ,Quite the downpour

It has turned into a very nice afternoon in Galway.

Autumn for me is about the harvest, sunsets and the tree colours. I have a friend who gets up very early these September mornings every year to gather mushrooms. I'd be a bit nervous about picking the right ones but he knows his stuff to be fair.

A high of 15.8C here near Tralee, 15.2C now, bright and fresher feeling in the breeze than earlier, bit of a nip in short sleeves this evening. Shadows being cast much earlier now, it was quite dark by about 20.45 last night during the rain, just 3.5mm here, looks to have been quite wet in the East today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,236 ✭✭✭appledrop

God what an absolutely miserable day, horrendous traffic on the commute in morning and evening.

I had to laugh at national slowdown day, trust me no one was doing above 20km on M50 or N4 today!

clear skies now typical after such a gloomy day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,387 ✭✭✭highdef

Ah it was only the Eastern half of the further that had gloom all day. The other half had bright and sunny spells. If the latest charts verify, temperatures could be approaching the mid 20s in many Midland areas this Friday and Saturday! What could go wrong? 😏

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,146 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

A fairly chilly start to the day. Damp also. Made the mistake of walking the dog through some fields. Socks are ringing, toes are frozen.

WOWSERS, It's cold out there this morning. Hands are numb back from a walk. 10c, but feels a lot cooler than that in the fresh breeze.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,236 ✭✭✭appledrop

Ah lads where is the nice back to school weather, heavy rain showers every day not a hope of getting clothes dry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 585 ✭✭✭Rugbyf565

Grim start to September, some poster in here predicted a heat wave lmao. Think I’ll be booking a sun break in October.

in work awaiting for the rain shower to pass before I get on the bike home

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

    it’s cold and wet today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,113 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

I’d love to see the stats on that one appledrop. There’s been as many bad weeks as good ones I’d guess on the kids return to school.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,860 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

it's freezing if you're on a bike, would need hat and gloves. can't believe i was sunbathing a couple of days ago. at least friday looks like it'll be a fine day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,696 ✭✭✭Darwin

Decided to go for a walk in bright sunshine and at about 6.15 there was an almighty deluge, I was lucky to get shelter under a tree. The showers are very sporadic in nature today, but when they arrive, they deliver!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,953 ✭✭✭acequion

As you say we'd need to see Stats, but I would say there have been more good than bad. Being a teacher, the return to school over the years is something that really stands out in my memories. And until the Irish climate nose dived over the last 2-3 years, I think Septembers were generally the better month of the May-October period. I remember often being grateful for warm, dry weather, helping us all settle back into the first term and shorten the winter a little. I even rememeber claiming that I'd prefer better Septembers to Julys and that was generally the pattern. Not all of September and not quite every year, but enough that I remember. All gone to pot these last few years though. You really would hope these years are just a very bad blip and not the start of a long term pattern.
