    It is a test.

Well going by the recent HEO competition, it closed first round assessments on 17/07/24 and we received the results on 07/08/2024

I would agree with Eva777 that the Situational Test is a load of nonsense. Some so-called 'experts' have already secretly agreed on the correct answers. It seems that you fail the test if you don't agree with these experts.

    I'm wrong as usual :-)

Your marked out of a max score and if you fail to reach a certain score then you are not given an oom.

You have to pass all 3 to get an oom but only two count towards your placement.

I usually look at them and think actually I'd do none of those things lol

The answers you give are scored and monitored far more subtly than you showing them a simple right or wrong. From your answers the psychometric programmes is able to deduce a certain pattern within your answers. Say for example, if you are guessing option A all the time or it detects a pattern of A B C D etc then it knows that you are guessing or unsure, or if you are close to right when incorrect. For the Situational Judgement it too will suss out guesses or a pattern of erratic or plain wrong answers given.

I am doubtful that 15 answered out of 36 questions will get you a pass unless you happen to be correct on every single one.

Just the dozen or so employment psychologists who work in PAS. Sure, what would they know? 😉

Thanks, you're right but I couldn't find the words to describe what you have properly.

Hi i ticked the irish stream

I’m an EO but was just offered the AO job. Can anyone tell me the difference between both jobs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28 M1ntyPyth0n

AO is paid slightly more and the increments go up faster over the years, I would take it on that basis alone.

In some departments you are working on complex policy work and other projects and might not have any staff under you, in others you may be doing all the same work as HEO with a load of direct reports under you. It depends where you're placed.

PublicJobs .ie have role profiles for EO and AO, and some videos of people talking about their work. Information or booklets will also be available on the AO threads on this website.

Anyone have an idea when EO campaign 2024 test results are out

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Missy95

Thanks very much. So do you think there would be a lot more work in the AO role?

Is it a much higher volume of work?

In many places it's doing a HEO's job for an EO's pay (well, until you move up the scale a few points)

It was supposed to be a specialist role for graduates but many HR depts totally abuse it now to get yellow pack HEOs with little prospect of career advancement.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Missy95

Thanks for letting me know. Thats very concerning that they’re using them as HEO’s. I’m already on EO money so nothing to gain financially.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 869 ✭✭✭crinkley

if you’re interested in policy then go for it, there’s is a distinct difference between AO and HEO one is operations the other is policy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭MaryKaye79

in my department AOs and HEOs do the same job, manage a team - only difference is HEOs are paid more
think the AOs eventually catch up pay wise

think carefully and try to find out where you will be going/what you will be doing before signing on the dotted line, then you can make an informed decision, not always possible with these competitions though

    good luck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,980 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

That was the case decades ago but for 20+ years now the situation is as I describe above. I was one, an AO stuck in a dead end job, thankfully I was also on a HEO panel and got out after a few months.

    That was in 2001!

obviously depends on departments so, my unit wanted a heo and was told no because the job description was more akin to AO. The AOs are on the technical side and HEOs on the general looking after admin and finance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46 Mytimetoshine22

Id say the 6th September l

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,980 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Depends on areas within departments too, you will have AOs working on policy but others filling what to all intents and purposes are HEO roles. My old role was replacing a HEO and the head of HR freely admitted to me that they were filling such vacancies with AOs where possible to save on payroll. I was never so glad to get out of a place, the building was falling down around us too and this was the HQ! Since demolished

AO is essentially HEO, but instead of taking the massive jump in pay at the start, it's averaged out over the years but ends at the same amount as HEO.

What do you mean you don't have anything to gain? Of course you do!

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Missy95

I think I’m just nervous of accepting the AO because I’m only an EO for the last year and kinda intimidated by the huge jump in responsibility and not sure if I’d prefer to stay as an EO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 395 ✭✭pygmaliondreams

Ah you should absolutely take it, you got an offer because you're well able for it. I'm fairly sure you can request to be demoted if you do take the job and it isn't a level of responsibility you're capable of? At least if you've finished EO probation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,980 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Don't let my comments put you off totally but do talk to the department offering the role before you accept, it's not necessarily a huge jump in responsibility, find out if it's a policy role or what would traditionally be a HEO role, what staff you will manage if any, then think about whether it's what you want.

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Missy95

That’s great to know thanks. I have finished EO probation so that’s great that demotion is an option.

  • Registered Users Posts: 84 ✭✭Missy95

I appreciate your comments @Hotblack Desiato. Very good idea to find out from the department offering what’s involved. I’m ok with policy but not so much a HEO role. I’ve 2 staff under me now which is ok.

Irish Prison Service is taking applications now. Starting prison officers it says is €35k and there are allowances. Might be of interest to someone here

Ok so lay your bets when the results come in for this thing ..I'm going with this Friday at...say 3.30pm LOL

  • Registered Users Posts: 23 coop142

I’m a bit premature with this but does anyone know the time frame between getting results and interviews? I understand it obviously depends on your oom how quickly you’re called but would the first batch be within a few weeks or could it be a month or so?

Also just curious on the timing between getting notification that you have been called for the interview and the actual interview date. Conscious about how long people would have to prep for it.

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 869 ✭✭✭crinkley

all depends on your county, can’t really put a time frame on it but if there’s positions and you’re high up it won’t be long

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 Tupence

If you are outside Dublin, be prepared to wait. I know of OOM s of 5 to 8 that did not get an interview in smaller counties within the time frame

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 395 ✭✭pygmaliondreams

If you're in Dublin probably within a few weeks for the first people on the OOM.

Otherwise could be months if ever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 civilserviced

Anyone know where in the OOM I'd need to be to get an interview for Westmeath? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 869 ✭✭✭crinkley

Best check out the EO 2022 thread, that panel got extended but is due to finish in a few weeks so should give an indication of how far down they got

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,885 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

An EO friend of mine told me that the Civil Service are crying out for EO's and not to get disheartened if your OOM isn't great, just to be patient and wait.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,177 ✭✭✭shmeee

"Crying out" and actual EO places becoming available are 2 different things. Loads of areas need CO's, EO's and HEO's but doesn't mean positions will become available. Big rigmarole behind it all!

Im like 15 places away in a southern county for 2022 campaign say slim chances for getting interview if it's closing soon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,177 ✭✭✭shmeee

Doubtful, panel to close on 27th. I've not heard of any interviews in last month or so. A batch got interviewed in July alright and are 1 or 2 off getting placed. And even them people are doubtful of a position at 1 OOM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 102 ✭✭summersun23

TThey might invite u a week and a half in advance of interview or maybe 2 weeks

  • Registered Users Posts: 67 ✭✭WednesdayGirl

Probably top 50 / 60 based on last year, just over 100 were called for 2 year panel (104 to be exact) :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 102 ✭✭summersun23

Lots won't take the job tho, plenty of people I know do multiple panels and interviews - basically just for options and either don't bother moving or have since got something better

  • Registered Users Posts: 759 ✭✭✭Moyglish

Anyone know where the interviews are held?

Are they held remotely over Teams, in the county you applied for or in Dublin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,177 ✭✭✭shmeee

Impossible to tell really. Your score will give you a OOM, it's the OOM you go off then and once that is known - you'll have a better idea on the chances of an interview. The OOM will be provided along with test results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭MaryKaye79

niece got called for interview for later this month from EO 2022 panel

    got 15 days notice
