So it looks like the initial reports were true. Military training facility hit by two ballistic missiles. But more importantly there was an air raid alert going off and it was ignored. A big loss which could and should have been avoided.

It comes as Romania are in talks to provide one of their 7 patriot's to Ukraine. Hopefully the motion passes because these will help Ukraine shoot down ballistic missiles.

According to BBC the air raid alert wasn't ignored but rather "too little time" to get to shelters. Hmmm who knows where the truth lies. Either way a terrible tragedy to lose so many young people in one go.

More strikes and deaths overnight, major disruption to schools just back, a swathe of resignations and criticism from within Ukrainian political circles. It's been a terrible start to the month for the Zelensky government, let's hope it turns around quickly

    And Simon Harris visits today!

Very disappointing but to be expected in a war. A number of issues crossed my mind on hearing about it.

    (1) UKr should have their training units on a mobile footing so that Ru do not know where they are - at least less likely

    (2) training should be carried out in smaller groups

    (3) I understand that there are some UKr nationals who are Russian sympathisers and pass on information to ‘ their appropriate handlers’ so, because of this UKr should make sure that as many of these, their sons , daughters, aunts , uncles, brothers, sisters , , grandfathers , etc should be placed in areas where Russians are likely to attack. I am floating this idea as. A strategy but it might be more of a disadvantage than an advantage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

And most importantly no military parades. Even at funerals. Leave that until after the war.

Very disappointing reading the comments on sites about Harris visiting Ukraine.

Its clear most Irish people have swallowed Russian propaganda hook line and sinker.

They have been so sheltered from war they really don’t think there is a chance it could come to our shores if we let a genocidal maniac with Nukes threaten the world succeed in Ukraine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

This is a pro Russia account but they post accurate frontline updates. I'm not sure this is something to brag about however especially when Ukraine now controls part of Russia.

Russian Railways reported the biggest collapse in freight traffic in Russia in two years

    https://www-moscowtimes-ru.translate.goog/2024/09/03/rzhd-otchitalis-o-silneishem-za-dva-goda-obvale-gruzoperevozok-po-rossii-a141111?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wapp

And to think of it there was someone here sneering at reports of just this recently

Interestingly Russian railways used to carry only as much freight in a year as can fit on 200-250 of the largest container ships

When you go offline and actually talk to Irish people though most seem to support Ukraine and if they don't can be easily brought around with a few facts.

Even a genocidal maniac in the Kremlin will require the complicity of a number of others to launch a nuclear strike. And if that ever came to pass, I suspect that they would say, 'enough'.

51 Ukrainians getting killed is a tragedy… avoidable? Possibly, but I don't think Ukraine's leadership need worry about reading boards.ie for military strategy. The logistics for a war against a lunatic aggressor like Russia will be immense, and that such occasions are rare says something also. Also, Unless all 51 were from the same Russian village a similar strike wouldn't make it into any media in Russia. So, perspective is required.

And Zelensky is reshuffling his cabinet. This is being reported as these people stepping down as a way to clear the decks for the president. Depends on you spin it I suppose.

    From RTE:

Taoiseach Simon Harris has paid tribute to the resilience of the Ukrainian people as he visited regions catastrophically damaged during the early stages of Russia's invasion. Mr Harris is in Kyiv for a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Lviv residential areas were hit by Russian missiles overnight, quite a few dead kids

Darth as usual making observations that cut to the bone

Politico writes on what I’ve been banging on for while now, key EU politicians and some member states have a lot to answer for deliberately holding back the transfer of 300bn of seized Russian state assets that can end this war

    https://www.twz.com/air/above-all-else-jassm-would-give-ukraine-a-steady-supply-of-cruise-missiles

Big grain of salt required with that. Only recently a Reuters report stated that it was months away, saying it would take months to retrofit them on Ukraine's Migs. Seemly missing the F16's Ukraine have.

Then there's also the issue of giving Ukraine a long range stealthily missile with a large payload that (more than likely) can't be used on targets in Russia 🤷🏻‍♂️

I dunno, F16's were planned and approved for Ukraine over a year ago, if they were planning on sending JAASM's with them, you would expect them already. Same for long range AA missiles. All the things Ukraine needs now, seem to be just being discussed. Absolutely zero rush to be sending them.

Germany, France, the Dutch, the Austrians and possibly a few more are looking, still, at the post war settlement.

They won't allow the 300bn be touched.

Maybe we should look at having these Putin lackies pushed out of the EU?

    Short term is everything.

The F-16s are too few and far between at the moment. As of early August, Ukraine only had ten F-16s available, and that was before one of them was lost. Pilots seem to be even more scarce. I mentioned it a few times already, but until Ukraine has at least one or two full squadrons, and the requisite number of pilots, those F-16s are best used in a purely defensive role, going after cruise missiles and the like, plugging gaps in Ukraine’s air defense system. Given that this mark likely won’t be reached until the end of the year, it makes sense to use aircraft types as launch platforms that are available in some quantity, and where you have sufficient numbers of trained pilots such as the MiG-29.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,919 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

I understand that, however going by the Reuters reports, it will take months to retrofit Ukrainian Migs to fire JAASM's (assuming they get them). In a few months time, Ukraine could have more F16's and pilots trained. It's stupid to sit back and wait months rather than giving Ukraine JAASM's now and allow Ukraine to decide how to use them.

Ukraine have no long range capabilities (excluding drones) to hit deep into Russia. US won't allow the UK/French storm shadows be used (they have some US tech on them), so I highly doubt the US would allow Ukraine use JAASM to attack targets within Russia, so it's probably a moot point.

It seems to me Ukrainians are going about asking for help the wrong way

The only thing Europeans understand is nuclear blackmail from Russia, well both sides can play at it

    1. Send a letter to every European state that Ukraine will withdraw (within X weeks) all air defences from 500km radius around each of their nuclear and thermal plants and move to the front, any thermal plants will also now become storage facilities for waste from Chernobyl and fission facilities above
    2. Publish this in media widely
    3. Invite any combination of European countries to bring in whatever equipment and personnel they want to bring and defend these areas, Patriots, F32s, brooms in case of Ireland, whatever, come and defend your own future
    4. Or they can transfer Russian seized assets and these be spend in Europe on buying air defences

Putin is deliberately targeting plants thats can render half of Europe uninhabitable for long time, IMHO that European countries don’t see the danger in this nor want to prevent this is the height of irresponsibility

At some stage European countries will need to admit there is a major war on with existential risks for Europe and start doing something about it

All the most popular parties in these countries right now are Pro Kremlin and Putin.

Russia has properly infiltrated Europe and no one seems bothered.

    Depressing times.

What are the chances of Ukraine dropping nuclear waste/plutonium on Moscow if Russia uses a nuke in Ukraine?

    99%

    99.999% or

    99.99999% ?

I think Ukraine can easily handle the nuclear threat even by itself.

I wasn’t talking about bombs, I’m talking about Putin deliberately targeting plants which could endup creating a giant dirty bomb if they explode, meltdown etc like Chernobyl or Fukushima on steroids

And rest of Europe acting like radiation will stop at the borders of Ukraine

Ukraine in last three years have been saying

    • give us the the tools and we beat Putin back across border, we use our men to defend Europe while yee guys just need to offer equipment and money

Not much in way of tools have materialised or endsup arriving late or in case of Russian criminal state assets and long range missiles are deliberately withheld

IMHO they should shift the message to

    • come and help defend Ukraine, because if we go down you lot standing there looking on and doing **** all will almost certainly also go down with us

We are at the stage where Russia are daily lobbing missiles at civilians and nuclear plants and dams and rest of Europe just shrug like we are isolated from the consequences of Russian atrocities

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,141 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

If they can render half of Europe uninhabitable then they can render half of western Russia uninhabitable too. Not to mention Ukraine could retaliate by targeting russian NPP's. Putin doesn't want any of this but he sure as hell will make his enemies think he will. Because our fear buys him time.

Time and time again his red lines get crossed. Nothing changes.

The Israeli used patriot systems have been upgraded to better target missiles , probably not as PAC 3 , but better than nothing ,

These are currently in storage -

Interestingly they're on loan to Israel ,from the US ,

And Israel have 8 batteries , and large stock of missiles ,

And Israel is leaning heavily on the US for support at the moment ..

Does the US preclude Israel from strike on Iran or hesbolah with US tech - because of threat management,

On the matter of long range missiles to target Russian military assets. Could Ukrainian engineers replicate the technology, with a bit of help on the side, and build their own missiles to deploy? Is this a realistic way for the French/ British/ Germans, US etc to get around this obvious problem? Intellectual property and technology rights should hardly be a blocker in this situation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭thatsdaft

I agree what I’m trying to say is that Ukrainians have been trying to appeal to European sense of solidarity and defending democracy

    Which is not enough

    They should instead say

“Either give us the Russian 300bn and let us buy planes, missiles to defend our country and Europe

Or come on in with your men and equipment and establish a no fly/missile zone around majority of the country

Or continue sitting back and praying Putin doesn’t render half of Europe unliveable for next 50,000 years”

It’s time for Europe to step up, the Americans will only go so far and have their own homegrown fascist problems

Europe does not even have the courage to send troops to guard the Belarus border (thereby freeing up UA troops). A nuclear attack by Russia will not end the world, but it will end Russia (plutonium goes to Moscow for starters). So go in and do something.

    K and then?

Tying the deep striking of Russia and pressing Europe to get off the pot feel like overreactions to the meddling in US elections doesn't it?

    K and then?

And then Ukraine might have a fair shot of actually winning the war. It's not an exaggeration to say that much of the misery being inflicted on the Ukrainian civilians and frontlines alike can be attributed to the stupid, amoral non-escalation policy rife in the west. Spearheaded by the Biden administration and Jake Sullivan particularly.

Tying the deep striking of Russia and pressing Europe to get off the pot feel like overreactions to the meddling in US elections doesn't it?

It gives the West an excuse to untie Ukraines arms. Much like happened with Storm Shadow. The British defense minister at the time, Ben Wallace, stated that he had warned the Kremlin that if their new campaign of targeting Ukrainian civilian power infrastructure continued then the UK would furnish UAF with Storm Shadow. Now they probably knew full well that Russia would ignore them. But it gave them clean public image to bump up UAFs capability.

There's no reason that couldn't happen again. And there's no downside to offering the warning. Hey interfere in our elections and JASSMs are gonna start raining down on internationally recognized Russian soil proper.

It's also not an exaggeration to say that Trump getting into the White House is pretty much the one avenue Russia has to a win in Ukraine. Which really could be a world destabilising event.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,587 ✭✭✭Jinglejangle69

Plus things are about to get a lot worst with huge deliveries of Iranian missiles.

Russia can keep up this bombing of civilian infrastructure for as long as it wishes because who’s gonna stop them??

Or else wait until one of Putin's missiles gets a brainstorm, travels way off course and hits an EU city causing major damage. Only then will you see the appropriate response, and the massive retaliation that's needed to prevent Putin from launching his terror attacks on cities.

They'll still do nothing even if that happens. They've shown they have no interest in getting directly involved with Russia and that won't change.

All we'll see is the gradual increase in arms when things look bleak for Ukraine or the reduction when things look promising. Ukraine is a puppet on a string being used to tie Russia up in knots and reduce their military capacity.
