Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yeah but rage is a bit like a drug. Our brains aren't designed to be angry all the time. It's deeply, deeply unhealthy. I've family members who talk about nothing but gossip and outrage pieces they trawl the internet for. He's like a drug dealer, off his face on his own stash.

I had never paid much attention to him, I just thought he was a bit goofy and eccentric with his Mars talk etc. I started watching Thunderf00t's videos and then saw what a bullsh!t merchant he is. In hindsight the incident where he called a diver involved with the cave rescue in Thailand a pedo should have been the mainstream moment that showed who he really is, there is a specific type of person who just calls random people pedos, and he is showing who he really is now.

There is also the injecting himself into news stories: making respirators for covid, rescue subs etc. He also has the neck to think he will be part of a Trump administration to audit the government, after all the subsidies Space X gets (there are serious questions about how he gets that money) and the forced twitter acquisition which has to be the dumbest buy out ever. Then there's the robotaxis, robots and Neuralink.

"Like Brazil, the European Union also has an X problem"

    • Experts agree that a Brazil-like shutdown in the EU is unlikely, although it has the legal right.
    • The DSA would allow the bloc to demand a judge in Ireland, where X has its EU headquarters, order a temporary suspension until the infringements cease.
    • Jan Penfrat, of the European Digital Rights advocacy group, said a ban was "a very last resort measure" and the social media network would "probably" not close shop in the EU.

The above was an agency article, that I saw on RTE site on Thursday, had a post drafted that I decide not to use. I pulled out my highlights of the piece above.

    • Now German Green Party politician Anton Hofreiter is proposing to restrict the use of the online platform X in this country as well. He also says that more "virtual agents" are needed to take action against criminals. He justifies this with the fight against terror.

Found the below link in a google search which has since been removed.

Brazil’s X ban drives outraged Bolsonaro supporters to rally for ‘free speech’

    • SAO PAULO (AP) — Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro began flooding Sao Paulo’s main boulevard for an Independence Day rally Saturday, buoyed by the government’s blocking of tech billionaire Elon Musk’s X platform, a ban they say is proof of their political persecution.
    • A few thousand demonstrators, clad in the yellow-and-green colors of Brazil’s flag, poured onto Av. Paulista. References to the ban on X and images of Musk abounded.

^^^ PEOPLE ARE CHANTING “FORA XANDÃO” (MORAES OUT)

Sharing tweets not endorsing the accounts, I have no way to verify if the videos are authentic from today or reused footage. I did request community notes on both.

Mario Narwal is not an honest actor, neither is Peter Sweden.
Both are happy to undermine a democratic election for their own sake.
in X it is not possible to figure out the details between those two stories. Scroll under them for info and it is drowned by blue collar ticks. Surprisingly the international and national newspapers are also empty of both events. Strange.
looking back at 2012 and you find: https://brazilinhotpants.wordpress.com/2012/09/08/brazilian-independence-day/ No huge crowds either.
So we would need to get more info to categorize both events.

Reported and blocked this account myself. It popped into my feed tonight.

I'm happy to see that even our own boards.ie took a page from Musk / X's book, allowing for a less moderated and more robust debate in this forum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,217 ✭✭✭✭Dohnjoe

Not sure whether sarcasm but I would hope not

Less moderated = declining debate. Look at 4chan.

Musk is attempting to do the same to Twitter.

No, it's not sarcasm and Twitter it's a better place since he took over. Community notes are a much better alternative to bans and deleted content. Yes you will be exposed to opinions you don't like and that's good for everyone.

No, it isn't. It's a cesspit. Somehow, he found a way to make it worse. I fail to see how my life will be improved by reading opinions justifying the molestation of children, anti-vaxx, climate science denial, the great replacement, or whatever drivel the mainstream American right have embraced.

It's not good for anyone. Take any horrendous figure, e.g. Alex Jones, he uses the same "free speech" grift Musk does to spread his vile views. And before someone says "but community notes" - Jones had millions of daily users being poisoned by rhetoric before he was de-platformed.

You know what's better than Holocaust denial and anti-vax quackery? No Holocaust denial and anti-vax quackery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,490 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

    It really isn't:

    • The top replies are no longer the best or funniest. Instead they're all the twitter blue subscribers who tend to be weird Elon Super fans, consipracy theorists, crypto accounts, pro-Russian propaganda accounts, libertarians or far-right types who want to turn everything into a culture war topic.
    • The bot situation has gotten out of control - During big sporting events I used often search the official hastags to see what people were saying online. If you do that now 90% of the replies will be bots trying to get you to click on (what they claim to be) illegal streams. Then in the replies you see the same porn-bot type accounts over and over.
    • Low quality ads all over the place "Do you need to lose weight now?", "Look at this crappy knick-knack for your home"
    • Removing the ability to see who liked a post. Making it way heard to find the quote tweets for a particular tweet
    • An incentive scheme that just makes people try and post outrageous stuff in order to generate clicks to farm outage

And that's just the structural stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,212 ✭✭✭Cordell

Your life will not be improved by those opinions that you are free to ignore because no one is forcing them on you. However, having the freedom to post those opinions is something that makes your life better - you don't have to even exercise that freedom, but you need to know it's there. The anti-vaccine narrative was something that reached it's peak while it was suppressed on all media and mainstream social media sites. Suppression doesn't work, it makes things worse.

Musk will use his fake bots, and his algorithm to promote racist Nazi vomit and worse. You won't be able to stay away from them. He will flood Twitter through his account and you won't be able to block or mute. The only choice will be to stay away from Twitter. This is clearly a tactic to drive moderates from Twitter so he can use it as a loudspeaker to spread hate and lies. And he has given himself the biggest loudspeaker.

Do you think it is ok to troll rape survivors and tell them they deserved to be raped?

Because Musk does, by his actions of commission and omission.

The argument from your previous posts welcomes the fact that such a survivor on twitter should not be allowed to block or mute the spewers of such hate?
Do you welcome that? It's ok because she is being "exposed to opinions she doesn't like"?
And this is not me putting words in your mouth. This is me applying the logic expressed in your previous post to actual scenarios that have played out on Twitter.

I can think of no greater argument that Twitter is demonstrably worse under Musk then that that account is active again. And they're right back to what they were posting when they got suspended

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,431 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

It's very important to hear both sides of the arguments apparently.

Such as misogynist trolls being able to tell rape survivors they deserve to be raped.

Such as Nazis spewing hatred about mixed race couples.

That's robust first Amendment territory according to Musk, apparently.

I don't know what you're doing wrong or what I'm doing right but I don't have this kind of content in my feed. And even if you have, the fix is simple: . . . → not interested.

Can it be that you actually go searching for content that offends you?

It was never suppressed. Feel free to provide evidence but it was roundly and rightly called out for the hateful nonsense it is.

Nobody's forcing them on me, true but when I see the same people trying to shut down left wing opinions, it quickly becomes clear that they don't care about free speech at all.

I don't think Leon realises that the first amendment means sweet f*ck all outside of America.

I mean, unless he's actually trying to get rid of Twitter worldwide, and just have it for the US? It's obvious (to me) that if he does actually go ahead with getting rid of blocking and muting, the EU will follow Brazil's lead and kick Twitter out of the block.

(And yet somehow this sh*t-for-brains is on track to be a trillionaire? Money makes money, people)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,657 CMod ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

I think he doesn't realise it because he's radicalised himself to the point where he doesn't even realise that there's a whole world outside the US. Like, he's wailing about Brazil at the same time. Supreme case of cognitive dissonance, I reckon.

And it didn't work. It made things worse, and not only for covid vaccine, we're seeing diseases that were supposed to be eradicated coming back. Left, right, anti-scientific, nonsensical, stupid, any kind of opinion should be allowed, that's how we grow, not by hiding them away, but by exposing them to criticism and ridicule. And even trolling if it needs be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,217 ✭✭✭✭Dohnjoe

Before Youtube changed it's algorithm, a search for e.g. "9/11" would bring up hundreds of conspiracy videos. Likewise with Google.

People with extreme views are more inclined to share and spread those views, often faster than they can be refuted.

For example, a dozen people are estimated to be responsible for the majority of global anti-vaccine disinformation. Musk has handed those people a megaphone and a bigger audience.

Community notes were introduced in 2021 before Musk bought it. It was expanded in 2022, especially after he bought it. It's slow to react, misses most misleading tweets and isn't a replacement for a trust and safety team.

Leon Musk regularly removed notes from his own tweets.

could not find it, but found a community note that stated that to mute/ban/block someone is mandatory for social platforms.

You cant just get away from these people on that app. The whole app is structured to allow blue tick subscribers top row seat in any thread.

If there is even a hint of any thread that may criticize anything Musk says or does you can be damn sure the army of Musk stans will be out in force at the top comments defending him like their lives depended on it.

I ditched X well over half a year ago now, and while there is some content I will now miss out on because of it. I am sure it is the best decision I have made. The very worst dregs in society having free rein to spout any hate they like. You can keep your free speech app if that's what it looks like.

More people are feeling the same way by the day and are ditching X, the site will become more of an echo chamber of hate and racism by the day if that trend continues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,431 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Do rape survivors "grow" by being allowed to be taunted by misogynistic trolls telling them they deserved to be raped?

I cited an BBC article covering this exact scenario on Twitter.
    You had no response.

That you have no answer to this is entirely discrediting of your line of argument here, and your claims therefore have negative credibility.

If you continue to make similar arguments about why people should be exposed to such hateful content, you can expect to be similarly challenged.

"False or misleading claims about the U.S. election that Elon Musk has posted to X this year have generated nearly 1.2 billion views, according to an analysis published Thursday by the nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate.

Researchers from the center said they identified 50 instances this year when Musk posted election claims that have been debunked by independent fact-checkers but spread widely on the app anyway.

None of the 50 posts by Musk displayed a “Community Note” to correct his claims or add context, calling into question the effectiveness of X’s user-driven fact-checking system, the center said. "

Ah yes, community notes mitigating the tidal wave of disinfo

Elon Musk's keeps banging on about free speech absolutism but time and time again he has caved to authoritarian governments (China, Saudi Arabia to name a couple) when asked to block accounts of dissidents that they wanted to silence.

I guess "Free Speech for all……………….unless a large country who I'm trying to flog my cars to or a country with a large chunk of this company tells me to block someone" doesn't have the same ring to it.

what is the saying? "a lie is half way around the world before the truth is even out of bed". something like that. community notes are only effective if created in a timely manner. with the amount of bile and bullshit on twitter that is practically impossible.

    so why post that cartoon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,668 ✭✭✭corkie

Because I didn't want to be trawling through the posters content, to find content specific to complain about under that. Tried it before to get copies of death threat of MLM taken down and it was refused. That report process is not as effective as people think.

Saw the above reported on Threads last night. Could not find it in his feed, so must have been removed. Not the first time he has threatened that.

Wonder what the EU Digital Services Act will have to say about it? Part of the principles of Free Speech is the right not to listen?
"This means that the government is legally obliged to take no action against the speaker based on the speaker's views, but that no one is obliged to help any speakers publish their views, and no one is required to listen to, agree with, or acknowledge the speaker or the speaker's views." ~~ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_speech

I'm careful about content, I search and engage with on the platform. The only reason (i can think of) that I got feed the post @Brussels Sprout shared is because I was following one account who was following that account.

I imagine it was just a cartoon from WAPO. It wasn't suggesting that they themselves were banned.
They were making a joke about Elon proclaiming to be this great free speech hero yet he happily scrolls through twitter and bans anyone and everyone for a myriad of………….. normally petty reasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,212 ✭✭✭Cordell

You are clearly happy with how Twitter/X is these days which is fine , but all the evidence says that the majority don't agree.

Revenue has fallen off a cliff and active users are declining steadily so the "new" Twitter is not as successful/popular as the old Twitter.

Which given that the old Twitter wasn't exactly a cash cow , isn't great news.
