Tomorrow will see the draw for the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League at 5pm.

    Draw pots for each league

    League A

Pot 1 - Spain, Croatia, Italy & Netherlands

Pot 2 - Denmark, Portugal, Belgium & Hungary

Pot 3 - Switzerland, Germany, Poland & France

Pot 4 - Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia & Scotland

    League B

Pot 1 - Austria, Czechia, England & Wales

Pot 2 - Finland, Ukraine, Iceland & Norway

Pot 3 - Slovenia, Ireland, Albania & Montenegro

Pot 4 - Georgia, Greece, Türkiye, Kazakhstan

    League C

Pot 1 - Romania, Sweden, Armenia & Luxembourg

Pot 2 - Azerbaijan, Kosovo, Bulgaria & Faroe Islands

Pot 3 - North Macedonia, Slovakia, Northern Ireland & Cyprus

    Pot 4 - Belarus, Lithuania/Gibraltar, Estonia & Latvia

    League D

    Pot 1 - Lithuania/Gibraltar & Moldova

Pot 2 - Malta, Andorra, San Marino & Liechtenstein

This edition will see the 4 best group winners not qualified for the 2026 World Cup join the 12 group runners-up from the main qualification in the play-offs for the World Cup.

Also there is a new format for the Nations League

League A group winners and runners-up now go into a 2 legged Quarter Final stage that is played in March 2025 while those who finish 3rd will play-off against the runners up in League B.

League B 3rd place teams will play-off against runners up in League C.

League C will see the worst 2 teams relegated while the other 2 bottom teams will play-off against the runners up in League D.

Not sure how this is going to affect the normal World Cup Qualification as they said those groups with 5 teams would start in March but most teams could be involved in Quarter finals or Relegation Play-offs in March unless they work something about with those teams not in those games.

On recent form you'd worry for us if we draw Greece or Turkey from Pot 4 and don't draw Iceland from Pot 2.

I really hope we don't draw England.

San Marino have won their first ever competitive game, beating Liechtenstein 1-0. This is only their second win of any kind and their first win in over 20 years.

Anyone see the state of that pitch in the earlier Bulgaria v N.Ireland match

I hate to involve politics in football, but sickening to see Israel playing games in this Nations League.

Uefa should have had the balls to tell them they weren't welcome, and the opposing countries should have refused to play them.

Unless they get punished as a nation in sport as well as world affairs, they will never change their ways.

Some of the battles that are emerging

    Hungary v BiH

Hungary have kind of fallen off a cliff so Bosnia-Herzegovina now have very good chance of finishing ahead of them, but surviving a play-off against a strong League B side might be too much

    Wales v Iceland

Iceland are doing okay but all three of their goals so far have come from set-pieces -- hard to know what level this Wales team are actually at but next month should tell a lot

    Norway v Slovenia v Austria

Austria already playing catch-up in this group, in spite of all the insane hype around that team over the last while. Will be interesting to see if Kazakhstan fade away completely or if their results can have some kind of an impact on the group

    Sweden v Slovakia

The obvious one in League C. Whoever finishes second is going to be the team all the third-placed League B teams want to avoid

    Armenia v North Macedonia

Would assume the two of them will fight it out but if Latvia and / or the Faroes can get good results at home it will keep things interesting

I'm Greek and definitely didn't expect that. Didn't watch the match but some reports suggest that we played well. Top of the group and I think guarantee us 2nd place and play against England for the direct promotion in Athens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 268 ✭✭rpirl

Interestingly Greece have a very poor record in Finland (three draws and five defeats)

    https://www.11v11.com/teams/finland/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Greece/

This team looks like the one that could finally get a win but if they do slip up it might open the door for England again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 268 ✭✭rpirl

Looks like North Macedonia are probably going to win their group ahead of Armenia (making Armenia possible play-off opponents for us). Armenia need to beat them on Sunday just to keep pace. North Macedonia will then have two home games against Latvia and Faroes to close out the group.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,417 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

On paper I can't understand how that side didn't score for 85+ minutes. Tactics wise probably went a little too attacking in midfield but surely those players playing to their ability win that game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

I’m hearing the England journos are mystified by Englands strikerless system vs Greece.

They’re surely aware carsley won an under 21 euros with this system. They took Cameron Archer as the only striker but he never played.

not easily shocked but was a bit shocked when I see Craig Gordon starting for Scotland.

Jon McCracken is the back up with a limited predigree. Includes a loan deal at Bohs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 268 ✭✭rpirl

    Bulgaria 0-0 Luxembourg

Hardly a goal to be had in this group, Belarus v Northern Ireland later, could be another 0-0 very easily

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54,713 ✭✭✭✭Headshot

This England team is awful to watch, you have wingers constantly wanting to come inside, it's a horrible watch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,669 ✭✭✭Damien360

I'm struggling to stay with it. Finland should have scored a sitter and I can't remember another good chance for England other than the goal. ITV prattling on about Harry coming deep and how good it is (it's not) and how everyone else should fill that space he left. Bellingham does an awful lot of talking but not a lot of work. It's a borefest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,669 ✭✭✭Damien360

TAA scores a free kick. Other than that, he has had a very poor game.

Pukki on and that lifted Finland against Ireland. Might do the same for next 15 mins.

Liechtenstein missed a 95th minute penalty against Gibraltar and, with it, the chance for a first competitive win in over 4 years (since beating San Marino in 2020). What it means is that, if San Marino beat Gibraltar in their next game, they'll be promoted to league C with a game to spare.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 268 ✭✭rpirl

Ukraine now at bottom of their group with two tough away games to come, that's them done by the looks of it

And they even picked up four points during this window, some of these groups can be very unforgiving

Tuchel to be the next England manager.

How long will the tabloids and the more obnoxious fans be able to keep their anti-German sentiment under wraps for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,417 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

The crowd who were obsessed with Carsley not singing the anthem are gonna blow the hole where their minds should be.

Also not an actually successful manager. Outside of the Champions League win with a team built by someone else he hasn't done much of note. Gets undue attention due to that young German Pep wannabe persona.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,199 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Cant see this ending well… the overwhelming media and public sentiment has seemed to be that they should be going for an English manager. Obviously loads of links to Howe, but Potter to me felt like a good fit for international management, and for this team.

Any missteps, any bad calls, any even remotely controversial comments and they'll be calling for Tuchel's head.

He should change his name to Tommy Windsor. The English are easily fooled.

It will be interesting to see if the German song will be sung now in the stands when the manager of their country is German.
