I really liked it. It's quite accessible for people who don't speak the language though it is a bit annoying how much I needed the subtitles. Great atmosphere at the cinema here in London.

I'm very glad this exists alongside An Cailín Ciúin. While that film was a perfectly crafted wonder of a film that proved there's an exciting future for Irish film, this is the brash, in-your-face, and almost certainly very popular alternate viewpoint the language needed just as badly. The film sticks pretty rigidly to its 'getting the band together' genre formula, but it's the sheer cheeky attitude that elevates it. Crude, drug-fuelled, unapologetically political, and - crucially - very, very funny. There's one joke involving a certain political figure that had me full-on belly laughing.

A damn good time, and hopefully it's the massive hit it deserves to be.

I heard the lads on with Pat Kenny this morning and they sound great craic and the film itself sounds look good crack too. I'm imagining a sort of cross between Derry Girls and Snatch through the medium of Irish.

I'll definitely give it a go.

Went to see it last night

    Brilliant!!! Defo recommend!

I wonder how much of it is true and how much is embellished

Not my cup if tea. Surely coming to with a decent name for the film should not have been hard instead of that stupid name. I will wait a few years and watch it on RTE whenever it gets there. No way I way would pay €2 never mind more to see that in a cinema sorry. It should have been a straight to T.V film.

Putting aside the very bizarre suggestion it should've been a 'straight to TV film' (because you don't want to go to the cinema to see it?), Kneecap is a great band and film name. Both a cheeky reference to the band's deep Belfast roots and an Irish-language pun. Suitably in-your-face given the nature of the trio's music and attitude. No notes IMO.

I disagree. Makes perfect sense for a rap troupe from West Belfast to behave in that manner.

I disagree. Think it's a terrible name and have no interest in the band of the same name or this. Besides to many proper good films in the cinema to go see this.

If you’ve no interest in seeing it (which is perfectly fine), I don’t really get why are you bothering with several comments here saying that you’ve no interest in seeing it?

Anyway, I went to see it tonight and really enjoyed it. Would highly recommend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 378 ✭✭iniscealtra

Really enjoyed it. Quite like the fact that you have no idea what’s fact or fiction. Didn’t expect Fastbender’s part to be so big.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,268 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

And then makes comments like this, without having seen it….

I agree. Like they are trying too hard.

I've heard it's brilliant. Can't wait to see it.

Every time I see the balaclava guy putting up a middle finger to the cameras, I think: 'Holy ****, that's cool'. They're like an Irish Pussy Riot, but 'rebelling' against nothing in particular, other than being born 30 years too late.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,046 ✭✭✭0ph0rce0

Just back. Thought it was brilliant

"Oh sorry never watched it, should have been straight to TV, the balaclava I'm so offended"

It's a band, their job is to entertain and to entertain the demographic that earns them the most money.

Just like every other band, movie star etc…

Some sad cnuts in here trying to bring ithem down.

No acting skills at all and they nailed it.

From nothing to the Oscars. Hope they win it.

The amount of Irish people that queue up to piss on each others success never ceases to amaze me.

    Lots of begrudgers.

It's usually people not happy with their own life etc, and can't stand others having success. Their loss.

Fantastic to see Kneecap having success. Best of luck to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,720 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

It is possible to dislike something/someone for reasons other than begrudgery.

    Absolutely.

Point stands though, lots of people are begrudgers though. It's an Irish (and British) trait.

Americans are the complete opposite. Saying that, they are very OTT 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,367 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

How can someone comment on the quality of a movie without having even seen it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,198 ✭✭✭PressRun

Thought it was a lot of fun. Quite formulaic storytelling and the emotional end of it probably could have been punchier, but it's funny and the use of music is really strong, and of course, the language elements are all handled really well. I enjoyed it a lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,890 ✭✭✭Beta Ray Bill

That's one of the most quintessential things about Ireland.

We love love beating down fellow Irish people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,819 ✭✭✭speedboatchase

Do we? Irish people hate Saoirse Ronan, Colin Farrell, Liam Neeson, Michael Fassbender, Katie Taylor, Niall Horan, Kellie Harrington, etc etc etc? The only worldwide famous Irish person that we find divisive is probably Conor McGregor, which is more to do with his tweets than his fighting. The cliche you're talking about is not reality, it's just a cliche people like to repeat.

The whole point of Kneecap is to provoke a reaction. You have a lad wearing a tricolour balaclava. People will have an opinion on that. And we can all be happy if Irish people are doing well but also think their act is 'not for me'/'a bit try-hard'. I think their act is a bit of a grift but best of luck to them as I'm sure plenty, especially Irish-Americans, will lap it up.

I've only ever watched one Kneecap video prior to seeing this film and I didn't even know it was them. I think they've done more for the Irish language than a century of corruption and nepotism by various governments. "Grift" is completely unwarranted. They make music and that's it. You like it or you don't.

Of course they’re putting on a show and they have very much received mainstream approval in the Republic. But they’re fighting plenty of righteous causes - from the UK’s approach to Northern Irish arts funding to Palestinian rights - and are doing lots for the promotion of the Irish language, in a very different way to the other recent wave of Irish language titles. Their ‘provocations’ at least are grounded in genuine conviction, which is a lot more than I’d say for a lot of other ‘try hard’ musicians out there.

The film is pretty formulaic and hardly some radical piece of art. But it’s an awful lot of fun IMO, with just the right amount of cheek and contemporary commentary to give it a bit of an edge. I wouldn’t go in expecting any more than that, but on its own terms it’s a damn good time.

The plot is a bit all over the place and it shamelessly bears more than a passing nod to trainspotting and I'm totally not their target demographic but it's an absolute riot. I came out of the cinema elated and bought tickets to an upcoming gig.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,221 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Was aware of one or two or their songs could take or leave them but just saw the film, have to say it was genuinely very funny on a few occasions had me properly laughing. For lads with no acting background they all did very well. There's something more to these lads then meets the eye.

Saw this last night. I don't like rap music, I've heard only a tiny bit of their music and didn't know a whole lot more than that.

Have to say, it was a superb bit of fun. And to be fair to the lads, they are all fine actors. Well worth watching in my opinion.

Surprised Joe Duffy hasn't latched into them for a rant tbh...

Planning on seeing this week looks fun

Great film. It should be shown on every school in the country. Best way of undoing all the damage our education system has done to our poor wee language.

saw this today - as a movie its really well done - well written, directed and acting is spot on

but why the overload of drugs and bd language? genuinely asking..

to me, the Irish language act takes 4th place to the politics, drugs and cursing..

The Irish language is front and centre. The whole film is a love letter to it. Everything else is just a side show.

    Kneecap – 9/10

An outstanding debut from director Rich Peppiatt. All the more impressive when you consider that he’s directing a bunch of non-actors playing themselves. It’s loud, full of attitude and has bagsful of energy.

To combine rap music, foul language and rampant drug taking with a poignant story about lost identity is no mean feat. It has both purpose and meaning and I left the cinema feeling that I had learned a lot. It fires on all cylinders. One of my films of the year.

It’s good to see Fassbender picking his projects well again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭sporina

a love letter to it? awe now.. its more like a hate letter to the brits.. and I doubt their fans care much about the irish language

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 41,480 CMod ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

I've no idea how you took that from the film. I really don't. One of the band even explicitly says that "Brits out" means the apparatus of the British state like MI5 and the army, not Protestants or Unionists.

The whole point is the Irish language. It's dominant throughout the film and the fact that a group of lads rapping about drug use and shagging have done more for it than a century of independence is damming.

i'm talking about the movie - not interviews by the band members - how the movie came across to me - and thats how it came across - even the father didn't approve of their ways; pro drugs and dealing "you don't understand the irish language" - he even said that to him - you might wanna watch it again.. ie: the father didn't approve of how he was using the irish language

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,994 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

He explicitly says to his girlfriend it's in reference to the British state. On top of that they shrug off the mantra of their father which was speaking Irish acted as bullets shot at the British. So it's pretty much about stepping into the future.

In relation to the drugs and drinking, it's relevant to their lives and it was absolutely great fun. The love floor the language was apparent throughout, if you look up DJ Provaí, he's been doing music in Irish people to Kneecap etc. This makes it accessible. It's a break from more traditional takes which is refreshing IMHO.

So am I. I'd never heard of them before seeing the film and I don't watch interviews.

It's fictionalised for entertainment purposes. I don't see the problem with that.
