Uefa Champions/ Europa/ Conference League rights 2024-27: Premier, VMTV, and RTE

There is also only 15 minutes of build-up for Premier Sports, whereby VM and RTE have a 30minute build-up, plus both are on until 10:30pm, meanwhile Premier Sports on until 10pm. Feels like a commentary only thing for Premier Sports, which isn't a good sign.

The Wednesday picks are weird, and might be a bit clearer when the league phase starts. Looks like RTE has first choice between them and VM, and then Premier seems like they can pick any match. Despite the fact that the same game will be on free-to-air tv, and also on TNT Sports.

With the centrally contracted phase kicking off today, here’s the blurb from Amazon about its coverage. It has the top pick in the UK on a Tuesday night, and its coverage should be available here too (in many cases, like tonight, this will probably be the same game Premier have gone for).

Shamrock Rovers and St Pats not happy with RTE, VM and Premier for none of them broadcasting any of their past and upcoming qualifying games.

Wonder why they're taking the stance on it. Virgin Media may not be fussed seeing they don't have Europa League and Conference League rights this year (of what we know). RTE would have normally showed at least one or 2 of these type of games before.

Generally the qualifiers aren’t being picked up for tv any more, here or in the UK, with most going onto club or league PPV services. To be honest I thought it was a strategic move by the clubs rather than because no one wanted to pick them up but if the latter really is the case, then can St Pats and Rovers really blame RTE in a summer where we had a later than usual Euros followed by the Olympics? Neither was going to be dropped and nor were RTE going to show sports in prime time on both RTE One and Two. Are they saying they’d have been happy with News Channel or Player only coverage scheduled right opposite these massive sporting events?

To be honest, the clubs have no case here, and absolutely, to single RTE on the basis they have some sort of obligation as a PSB to show these games - they don’t. VMTV, TG4, or Premier didn’t step up either.

Rovers at least will have six Thursday night prime time games on Premier Sports (and TNT) during the Autumn, and UEFA cash to boot, St Pats may still possibly make it too.

similar set up for Premier to their FAPL coverage, Eoin McDevitt, Shay Given, Kenny Cunningham in the studio, Con Murphy and Kenny Cunningham (again) on (obviously off tube) comms.

Prime are strictly whistle to whistle for this one.

And prime have the very welcome option of stadium FX instead of commentary.

Ah, but it’s nice to see Jon Champion get a regular UK commentary gig again - he was lead Premier League play by play commentator for Setanta and then ESPN for number of seasons but not retained by BT when they took over.

He's far from the worst yes. Could be useful for later in the campaign. I just can't warm to Shearer on commentary ( their choice on co comms for the season).

This article ( paywall) doesn’t contain much new but does tell us that Premier intend to show four games across Premier 1 & 2 on Thursday nights. They do say that if St Pats do qualify they will try to keep them apart, which tbh I thought UEFA normally tried to do for teams from the same city anyway. https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/2024/08/20/premier-sports-to-show-irish-teams-in-european-group-stages/

I presume that means the return of a seperate Irish version of Premier 2? Alternatively it could be done the old way, geoblock the coverage in the UK.

The League Phase Draw of the UEFA Champions League is going to begin shortly.

If you don't have access to watch the draw on VM More; it's live on the BBC Red Button feed known as BBC RB1 HD on Sky/Freesat.

    TNT1 and Premier 1 too.

Virgin Media also had it live on Youtube.

Wonder how the 3 game nights of the 1st Gameweek will work in terms of TV rights. We know the Tue and Wed 1st choice rights, but what options will there be for the Thursday games I wonder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,109 ✭✭✭iseegirls

And also same thoughts about Matchday/matchweek 8, where all games play on one day it seems.

From digitalspy, looks like Amazon don't have rights to a game that night, so possibly RTE have the first option on those matches, with VM and PS taking the leftovers

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,302 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

The French article posted on the first page of this thread seems to indicate that the Thursday rights are tied to the Wednesday ones but isn’t quite clear on how it works. It’s just one day though. Personally I’d have thought they’d balance the fact that one week has three nights and one week just has one but seemingly not.

The rumour is that TNT have totally ditched their Goals Show this season, having demoted it to the red button last year. If so that’s double the pity because if ever there was a case for whip around coverage that last night with 18 simultaneous kick offs is it. Soccer Special will no doubt be on, but they can’t show any action as Sky don’t have any rights.

The goals show also featured the only decent football pundits they had.

Their "golden generation" of pundits are atrocious. I generally mute them and listen to music until the matches start.

With TNT also letting most of their euro football rights go, if it was a stand alone subscription, and not part of a package, I'd be getting rid.

Liverpool and Arsenal fans (and City too), here are Prime Videos first five UCL picks:

Edit: apparently Boards doesn’t allow links to Twitter/X but the games in question (all 8pm):

    17/9 Milan v Liverpool

    1/10 Arsenal v PSG

    22/10 Arsenal v Shaaktar Donetsk

    5/11 Liverpool v Leverkeusen

    26/11 Man City v Feynoord

I can only see the provisional schedule for Tue 17th Sep on digiguide, however the following has been put in:

Premier Sports 1: 7pm AC Milan v Liverpool

    VM2: 17:30 CL TBA 19:40 CL TBA

    VMMore: 19:45 CL TBA

    Tuesday 17 September

    • Young Boys vs Aston Villa (17:45)
    • Juventus vs PSV Eindhoven (17:45)
    • AC Milan vs Liverpool - Premier Sports 1
    • Bayern Munich vs GNK Dinamo
    • Real Madrid vs Stuttgart
    • Sporting CP vs LOSC Lille

Interesting that VMMore only has one match scheduled so far, but I'd expect that to change.

TNT have Sporting Lisbon v Lille in their schedules for the Tuesday, TNT 4. Better still, they also have the Goals Show!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,686 ✭✭✭Acosta

Don't think it will be the usual lineup for the goals show, as i heard it mentioned on a podcast featuring most of people involved with it previously, including James Richardson, that they're no longer employed by TNT.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,302 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

I had heard it was cancelled too (they demoted it to red button last year) which is why I was extremely surprised to see it not only back in the schedule but on a linear channel too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 491 ✭✭EdmondShiels3

Has any Irish channel got first pick of matches?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,302 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Premier Sports on Tuesdays. The Wednesday situation is slightly less clear.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,302 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

On the topic of the Goals Show, James Richardson is indeed out, replaced by Matt Smith, Karen Carney and Owen Hargreaves are also joining. The other pundits (James Horncastle, Julien Laurens and Rafa Honigstein) are still with TNT but not necessarily the Goals Show (so only Richardson appears to have actually left).

TNT rightfully getting hammered on social media for butchering their only good show.

Horncastle referred to TNT as his former employer, the other week, on The Totally Football pod.

And deservedly so, whether it was their only good show it was certainly their best football one. Largely the same crew that had previously done the European Football Show on a Sunday night, where the analysis was frequently better than the match!

He may well have done so and it may have been true at the time. However he and the others (apart from Richardson who is definitely gone) are mentioned in this presser only yesterday.
