My new Halloween viewings haven't been great this year. The Exorcist: Believer was a mess, Sister Death on Netflix a bore.

The Nun II was trash but entertaining, just as I expected (it had two good jump scares though, at least something).

Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor had a few creepy scenes, the clowns in this series are the only horror movie clowns that I actually find scary. It was bogged down by the amateur drama club acting, a very unlikeable lead and characters making too many stupid decisions.

Will probably rewatch Trick 'r Treat tonight for the visuals and the Halloween vibes.

Watched Censor at the weekend.

There was a very good idea for a film in there. The first half was quite effective. I loved the set design and lighting and the scenes in the censors office. The mood was quite ominous.

But the second half was a bit too arthouse and the ending a bit vague and unsatisfying. Niamh Algar was unsurprisingly very good in it.

YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER is very good. And it is Irish. Plus it is set during Halloween. Not scary but very creepy and tense. And one of the best jump moments in horror films.

Strange how many Irish movies slip by me. I have to start paying more attention.

Going to watch TALK TO ME tomorrow.

I always to watch horror films in the lead up to Halloween something keeps getting I. The way and I end watching them through November.

Watched My Best Friend's Exorcism on Amazon Prime as I was looking for a Bank Holiday Monday evening movie in the same vein as Totally Killer.

It mostly delivers. Looks good, cool 80's vibe and it's quite enjoyable until towards the end when it kinda absolutely sprints across the finish line in a weirdly unsatisfying way.

Felt like if it was even 15 minutes longer it'd be a far, far better movie. As it is it's really fun but the pacing in the last five minutes is awful, feels like they tried to crush 20 minutes down into the five. Still worth a watch though, I'd give it 6.5/10.

I also watched Invaders from Mars last night for a bit of 80's horror schlock. The first half was charming enough and decent enough at building up to something, but it falls apart very quickly. Cheesy and unconvincing effects, hilariously bad acting, whole thing just kinda sucks to be honest.

Still, I stuck it until the end, I'd give it maybe 4/10. Wasn't thrilled that I squandered Halloween night on that.

Also I agree that You are Not My Mother is a solid film, really enjoyed it. Kinda unsettling and disturbing without actually being all that scary and the actors are fairly good.

Speaking of Prime video they waited till November to drop some pretty renowned horror to the platform the likes of Green Room, Return of the Living Dead,The Voices & Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (1978 remake). Great timing lads!

I rewatched Tucker and Dale versus the Evil, comedy horror and Cabin in the woods, which has explanations for all horror movie silly character decisions. Both definitely worth a rewatching.

Cabin in the woods is one of my fav films of recent years. So funny, smart and horrifying all at the same time. That film should have been nominated for Oscars.

Its ending very clearly precludes any possibility of a sequel in narrative terms. Trying to do the same thing again with another facility or whatever would feel very tired very quickly.

Now, if you want a film that has a similar tone (leaning much more on the comedy than horror) and also happens to star Fran Kranz, you should check out You Might Be The Killer. According to Justwatch it's available on Shudder at the moment.

Must rewatch the Clovehitch killer, about a teenager that suspects his father is a serial killer and the Poughkeepsie tapes, very unsettling tapes found of a serial killer.

I watched Pearl the weekend. I didn't know what to expect having not read many reviews. I had seen Mia Goth in Infinity Pool and she was great but this was something else. She really has something about her that is kind of other worldly.

The score and the visuals make it feel like an old movie. I have seen reference to the wizard of oz and it is something that comes to mind as you watch it. The story is about about a girl stuck on a farm with her harsh mother and ill father. Her husband has gone off to war and she is living a miserable life. She dreams of escaping to become a dancer and a famous star. It doesn't go well and we can see early on that she has a cruel, hard, streak in her. The ending shot is Mia Goth smiling and it goes on for what seems an age. It's really unsettling in a brilliant way.

Recommend this highly.

It was filmed on the same set and the same time as X, which is about a horror movie set on a porn set. Same characters too, but set decades later. Good movie aswell.

I bought an Amazon firestick so I could download the shudder app and watch it without having to constantly cast it from my phone with inconsistent connections etc. But I can't download it and it's showing as unavailable. Is there a way to get around this?

That article is a load of donkeyplop of the trying-to-shill-you-a-VPN variety. Here's the official page from Shudder stating where it is available - note that the list isn't long, but Ireland is on it.

The only thing a VPN gets you is access to a different catalogue based on the country you connect to.

No idea what the deal is with the Fire Stick app not being available, but it could easily be on the Amazon side, given how most things Amazon have been turning to arsedribble over the last few years.

The Shudder Channel on Amazon can't be accessed with a Shudder account, only via Amazon.

I contacted shudder and they said that because my account was created through Google play app, it's completely separate to the shudder website account. But shouldn't the app still be available to download on the firestick, and only not work when I try to sign in?

You can't get the shudder app on Firestick or PlayStation for that matter. I even brute force installed the Shudder app on Firestick and it still wouldn't work. It's the reason I cancelled my Shudder sub as I could only watch on my laptop or phone.

Shudder don't care and it doesn't look like they have any intention of sorting it.

Yeah works great.. I do sometimes need to force stop it and clear cache to get latest updates, but that's minor

The '74 Black Christmas and original Silent Night, Deadly Night are both good fun as festive slashers.

A Christmas Horror Story is an anthology festive horror - some stories are better than others, but William Shatner as a radio presenter who provides the connective tissue between the stories is very entertaining.

The Advent Calendar is a good, fairly dark horror thriller.

Violent Night is a fun riff on Die Hard.

It's very hard to get a hold of, and haven't had a chance myself to do so, but there's a Black & White version that supposedly was Frank Darabont's preferred approach - but the studio basically said "do this in colour or we're not releasing it".

The B&W version was released as part of a 2-Disc set when it was first put out on DVD; there seem to have been a couple of Bluray releases that include both versions.

For my money the B&W version is the way to go - aside from anything else the visual effects look more natural in black & white.

I watched ‘No one will save you’. I really enjoyed it. There is almost no dialogue in it. The effects are good. The backstory is interesting and the main actress good. It’s about a woman that lives alone and has an alien break into her house. I’m surprised there wasn’t more interest in it.

Coming up to the Halloween season again.

Just watched Late Night with the Devil. I'd give it a 7/10. Mainly for an original idea but it does fizzle out somewhat toward the end. David Dastmalchian is excellent in the leading role.

Currently watching Pearl. On the fence so far, doesn't seem to be a patch on X.

In A Violent Nature is on Shudder now (US anyway)

It's got a lot of silent walking sections that might seem a bit prolonged, but overall it's worth a watch… some very inventive death scenes

I found Pearl and X to be very different films, probably a bit hard to compare both. I was a bit disappointed in Maxxxine, it started great with the seedy 80's style but went a bit downhill in the second half for me.

Interesting to get the backstory on Pearl and Howard but it wasn't a great movie overall. Mia Goth was great though.

I liked both X and Pearl, both 7/10 for me. I probably preferred X as I liked the horror/slasher theme along and of course it had other ideas of youth/aging etc.

Have been watching Shudder's "Horror's Greatest" series and some films I haven't seen that looked interesting. So far they've covered Tropes and cliches, Giant monsters, Japanese Horror and Comedy.

Was trying to think what's the best horror film series.

I still think the Haunting of Hill House is the best horror series I've seen. I couldn't even get through Bly Manor though.

Midnight Mass was fantastic too. Excellent performance from Hamish Linklater.

I think Flanagan is a bit hit and miss.

Sorry, I just meant film series like Nightmare on Elm St, Paranormal Activity, etc. Think all have had their misses. Have only seen the first 2 PA films. Keep meaning to go back to them and maybe the Conjuring series since only seen the first one.

For me I'd probably say Insidious/Conjuring would be the best and mostly consistent. Although the Last Key and The Red Door did let it down a bit.

The Alien series I really love and enjoyed Romulus in the cinema last week. Maybe being pedantic it's not strictly horror.
