Lads lads lads Don't you know that VAR is only there and intervenes only to protect the referee and is nothing to do with the match. The referees are mainly a joke as is VAR. The referees on the sports shows who examine match referee decisions are the same …. a joke.

Man City v Arsenal today is the big game of the gameweek, but it only appeals in name and I don't think it will be an exciting game. As recent trends go, this game could well be dull as dishwater with both managers opting to kill the game and shut it down. Back to the 2005-2007 era Benitez & Mourinho type games 0-0 with not much excitement.

The last few meetings between these sides have seen both teams create not much of note, instead focusing on the defensive stuff and killing time etc. Last seasons games saw Arsenal win 1-0 from a late deflected shot in a game that saw a combined 0.86 xG from both clubs, and then in the return game, a 0-0, a small bit more respectable 1.68 combined xG, but over 1 of that was Man City. That game saw close to 30 fouls and multiple cards for time-wasting. It was clear what the tactics were.

Arsenal the masters at this now and have really evolved into a Atletico type team with antics, time wasting and delays - no more so than their keeper Raya & even attackers like Odegaard & Saka. It becomes hidden a bit when it's the big name players. Arsenal top the list of teams that delay re-starting the game after the ball goes dead.

And while they also top the list of delays when taking an attacking corner, this can be attributed towards allowing their 3 or 4 CBs come up to the opposition area, as set pieces is a large source of their opening goals. So there is some method and reasoning behind this.

Raya is taking massive delays when re-starting the game from a goal kick. Against Brighton, he took on average of 48.4 seconds to take each one - which is over 8 minutes of a delay! in the same game, Arsenal took an average of 26.6 seconds to take every throw-in they were awarded. It seems a lot, but it's not even the highest delay per set piece this season, it's the fourth highest. The highest was 31.3 seconds per throw-in, also by Arsenal against Aston Villa.

It's up to the referee to add on any time that is wasted.

Arsenal are nowhere near the level of shithousery that Athletico have displayed over the last decade. Comparing the two teams like that is ridiculous.

    "Athletico type team"

And tbf their style of play, and antics with time wasting, shutting down the game, defensive system with 6 or 7 defensive outfield players. Playing CBs at full back by choice. It's not too far away.

Some people really are desperate to compare Arsenal to Athletico.

Arteta must be going sometime weight to get into these people heads. Imagine working so much time under researching goal kick times. 😂😂😂

Watching Arsenal used to be way more enjoyable. But those stats don't really lie. It's a clear tactic - nothing wrong with it of course - but it certainly does take away from the enjoyment of their games I think. Way too pedestrian and slowed down for long parts.

I too think todays game will be ' a bit boring ', without too many goals. It is up to the ref to speed it up by telling them and then booking them if they persist. Unfortunately, this is usually done after the 80th minute.

Hoping for a 3-3 cracker but I seriously doubt it.

Atletico were on a different level to everyone else though.

If a player stamps on the ground next to an opponent they don't get sent off.

Martinez's tackle was both stupid and reckless.

Not sure how it can be called anything else. Banker yellow, probable 'orange', any contact at all and a banker red and long ban.

Simply no defending a tackle like that in my opinion. No need at all for it but he can be petulent like that and it doesn't really aid his game in any way - except possibly thinking that he is 'tough' - in some strange way.

Would ya stop, it can barely be considered the same sport.

I agree that it probably won't be a good watch today, but that won't all be down to Arsenal.

So who called that red card…

First, the ref said he got the ball and was playing on…before then coming back to show a card

VAR cannot intervene on a yellow…

So is it the 4th official or linesman….or the ref was told something in his ear!!

Oh Dear, Now I see this!!!

    Fourth Official: Anthony Taylor
Surely he is not in the tick of controversy again!!😂

    Yeah, that was weird...

Good game of football though. Nottingham look much better and I expect them to be safe far earlier this season.

And can't get my head around Brighton's manager only being 31 years old.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,764 ✭✭✭✭AdamD

This is good analysis but you need to consider that the sample size is tiny and includes an away game at spurs holding onto a lead and 40 minutes with ten men against Brighton.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭ForestFire

Yeah, I'm not too disappointed holding on for a draw…Much better this year over last year, we would have lost after going 2-1 down, even without the RED card…

Would Tony Pulis's Stoke be a better comparison?!

Obviously that's tongue in cheek as Arsenal have the ability to actually play better attacking football and have the attackers to do it. But they are being told to not do it and mitigate all risks and play so conservatively instead.

Arsenal have created 0.96, 0.87, 1.91, 0.37, 0.52 xG from open play in their games this season. 15 teams have created more xG than Arsenal in the PL this season, which I would be worried about as an Arsenal fan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,418 ✭✭✭allinthehead

True but we're only a few games in, I agree they haven't been great going forward, only one goal conceded though and that was when they were down to ten.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,210 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Yep, and tbf today is Man City away so some degree of it has to be applied again anyways.

Hopefully another article like that one is around come January time roughly, when there is a bigger dataset, to see was this just circumstance driven or is it just more concrete in the set up changes from Arteta.

Did Rodri get a whallop there by Havertz?

Nope, Rodri went to block him and went down as if a sniper hit him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,160 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

Man City time wasting already! 😜

Havertz does the square root of fúck all wrong.

Rodri tries to block him, and Havertz ran straight, as he's entitled to do.

Not the first time I've seen Arsenal being compared to Atletico on this thread recently. Absolutely nonsense comparison.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,418 ✭✭✭allinthehead

    Gundagon is some player.

Not like Gundo to miss the target from there.

    Haaland does what he does.

Arsenal opened up rather easily, Gabrielle playing him on.

Big toed it into the net, straight and true

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,620 ✭✭✭eigrod

someone needs to mute Neville. This “oooooo” thing he now does constantly during play is nauseating. He’s done it 3 times and we’re only 9 minutes in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,372 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

Calafiori absolutely mugged off for that goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,160 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

The best CB pairing in the league?

The best Keeper in the league?

Savinho and Haaland just made them look like Sunday league players.

Don't think he is the best keeper.

Centre backs are good but everyone males mistakes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,558 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

    Rodri is a dose

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,005 ✭✭✭ebbsy

Surely Rodri has to go off ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,574 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Arsenal , if all else fails, injury Rodri for rest of season , and then we'll win the league 😔

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,342 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Rodri's knee looks to have gone.

Am sure he will definitely go off 😂 😂 😂 😂

Hard to know with Rodri after his nonsense from kick off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,520 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

That's an ACL injury surely, has all the signs of it.

Feel for him personally, but the league title might not be a forgone conculsion now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,922 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

I assumed he was doing the bollocks to be honest. Very unlucky to get injured there, don't think Partey did anything.

You'd wonder about football at times, Rodri down for 4 minutes and nobody on the City bench remotely ready for a substitution.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,574 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

No one wants to see a player get injured, but we've all been their with our clubs, City very lucky so far with injuries throughout the years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,160 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

I didn't mean he was. Just that he's in the running for it.

    Great finish

    Peach of a goal.

That’s a beauty. Arsenal wasted no time with that set piece 😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,428 ✭✭✭facehugger99

the whole City team should be carded for surrounding and hounding the ref there.

Why are they letting them away with this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,558 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

that was mad technique, a side foot with the left across goal into the top corner

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,342 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

LOL at Pep kicking the chair.
