Halloween series is good, love Season of the Witch (part 3)

    Conjuring series is good too.

Nightmare on Elm St was probably more good than bad though only just about I think.

I liked all the Child's Play films.

Saw was more hit than miss.

    Final Destination was mostly enjoyable.

I'm sure I've seen other complete series but can't think offhand.

Any decent creature feature/animal attacks/monster movies out the past year or two? They're a particular favourite of mine, but they don't make them like they used to™!

Not sure if I found it in this thread but watched "Session 9" (2001) a year or two ago and thought it was quite good. About an asbestos removal company contracted to an old psychiatric hospital.

Cheers - have seen most of them but will check out Hatching and Malignant. 👍

Ha ha just a bit...I literally gasped out loud at one bit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,037 ✭✭✭Mr Crispy

Yeah, seen both. Out Come the Wolves, the new one from the director of Backcountry is due out around now I think.

Just back from seeing The Substance in the cinema.

Psychological body horror that will make you squirm and so so fscked up...definitely see it on the big screen if you can as the cinematography is amazing.

    Demi Moore is outstanding too.

Now to decide what film/TV series to start with for the October horror watch.

Terrifier 2 is genuinely one of the worst films I've ever seen, but the new one is getting good reviews

  • Registered Users Posts: 653 ✭✭✭Space Dog

Part 2 also got great reviews. If you're a gorehound and like mean-spirited horror you'll probably love it. I don't mind gory stuff in general, but there's something nasty about the Terrifier films that I find off-putting.

Watched the first two Terrifier films over the past week after all the hype, and once you get over the gore and bad taste excess they're simply pretty poor films. Yes, Art mugging away is occassionally amusing, but neither film has any real flow, atmosphere or clever filmmaking beyond that and the ludicrous kill scenes. I think the first is worse just because the filmmaking is so ugly and amateurish, but 140 mins of Terrifier 2 was truly exhausting given it has so little going for it.

Something cool I did watch and thoroughly appreciate recently, though, was the Hong Kong horror oddity The Boxer's Omen. Probably the weirdest and wildest fantasy horror film I've seen this side of Hausu - an endless assault of bizarre, creative imagery. It can be rather exhausting and some of the animal effects are either hilarious (the puppets) or objectionable (sadly, occasional moments of actual animal cruelty do crop up in some older HK titles - including briefly in this one). It's more of a fantasy horror spectacle than scary. But for sustained demented imagination, I've very rarely seen anything like it.

Shudder US has some good stuff to get ppl in the mood at the mo, with complete run of Friday 13th and some gems like Exorcist 3

I noticed that Shudder US has some good stuff recently - In A Violent Nature was a recent highlight, plot-wise it's like a several-sequels-in franchise horror film where the audience knows the lore and is in it for the kills (which, to give credit where due, are generally inventive and often disgustingly-in-the-best-way realised). But the thing that stuck with me is the way it's presented and framed, particularly the weird and strangely peaceful moments between deaths. A very interesting take on what a slasher sequel is about.

There's some fun stuff to be had on Youtube as well, it turns out. The Chair is one of the creepiest short horror films I've ever seen, and Milk & Serial is a fun pseudo-found-footage affair about a pair of Youtubers whose pranks on each other start to escalate. (Like too many other found footage films, it doesn't stick with the conceit enough, but is otherwise engaging enough for it to be worth ignoring that detail).

For the Friday 13th fans, worth noting that there are not 1 but 2 fan-films worth a look - Never Hike Alone, and Never Hike Alone 2.

Irish Shudder also has the wonderful Oddity, horror set in Cork and the director has a bright future IMHO.

That got a good critical reception state side.

  • Registered Users Posts: 653 ✭✭✭Space Dog

Portrait of God is a decent horror short on YouTube.

A really enjoyable creature feature, simple setting, no deep dives into character backgrounds..just a killer spider on the loose

Also Haute Tension ( High Tension) is available to stream on Prime

    Not for the feint hearted

I stuck this on last night and thought it was decent, but had a couple of issues - mainly that a few things felt contrived in a "well if it didn't go this way we wouldn't have a story sort of fashion, which to me normally means "your script needs more work". But it was pretty well made and made a good fist of balancing an uneasy atmosphere with a small number of pretty effective jump scares.

Nice, was trying to watch this for a long time but couldn't find a good copy with subtitles. Watched it last night, Brilliant movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,349 ✭✭✭Ninthlife

Finding a copy with subs and also a main stream placecto stream it was always an issue when recommending

If you enjoyed that try this,

'Strange Darling' pretty decent I thought.

One of those thrillers that skates in the horror realm than being outright.

Told in jumbled up chapters but works quite well in what it has to say. Impressed with the leads the dudeo I think was in Veronica Mars looked like him anyhow all grown up now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 645 ✭✭✭rtron

Watched the substance last night, probably 10 mins too long but good.

Watched Christine from 1983 and it still looks amazing. Carpenter could do no wrong, excellent cast. The auld lad who owns the garage is gas.

The original Black Christmas is a great watch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,002 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

Smile 2 is a definite recommendation from me, lots of good jump scares that don't seem cheap.

    Great acting all round too.

    Better than the first.

Couple of stand outs on Shudder

Lake Mungo: Aussie documentary style story about a tragic death of a young woman. Very enjoyable

Give me pity. Set like a tv special for an entertainment star that goes quite dark at points. One of my favourite movies in a while. It is hard to describe but it is something of a psychedelic trip.

Mads: Newly released I think. Again not sure how to characterise this. Part hallucinogenic party movie, part zombie movie. Just watch it.

Late night with the devil: Set in the 80s(?) a night show host is having a halloween special. It doesn't go well.

When evil lurks: Spanish horror. Quite gory.

WNUF Halloween Special is also supposed to be good. Might only be on Shudder US. Watching tonight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 599 ✭✭✭dubstepper

I watched it but found it quite poor. There is the news report from a haunted house that goes wrong but if you put all those pieces together you get maybe 10 mins. The main bulk of the movie is around the advertisement breaks, of which there are many. They are not that funny in my opinion. I thought it was a waste of time.

Might check it first and then try Late Night with the Devil if it's dull

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,434 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Will watch it at some point, but I see Shudder released a ~5 hour documentary about Chucky with loads of the main people involved in the series.
