Has the contractor for this and the bike shelter been released yet. Would be interesting to see what contacts they have with any government ministers.

Nothing to do with the Government though it's the OPW spending it like it's nearly out of date. The Public Accounts Committee should have been in it though.

Every journalist in the country is now busy submitting FOI requests on OPW expenditure from the past few years.

Now I’m wondering “why now?” Perhaps a giveaway budget is a good time to bury the shocking waste and corruption

Why would a security hut need such a ridiculous looking roof.

Until a full breakdown is provided we'll be inundated with people speculating that it should only cost x, despite not knowing exactly what was done.

Any work like this, done by the state, will always suffer from inflated costs. A lot will be due to time costs. Every minor change needs to be ok'ed by committee & likely requires a further engineer inspection, heritage study, ecologist intervention etc. There would be a fear within govt depts for someone to ok the spending of the money without every belt & braces check/study/examination done. It's easier too when it's not your money being spent.

If we were doing similar work on our houses we would plough ahead when minor changes are required. We'd make the decision immediately and live with it rather than exploring every other potential option.

The design of that roof, and design of the children's hospital, has added huge cost, instead of opting for simple structures.

Tell me you know nothing about construction costs without saying that you know nothing about construction costs.

Today the CIF said that there's 50k apartments with permission waiting to be built but they can't be built for less than 500k, which no one will pay. Construction prices have gone absolutely crazy in the last three years.

As for the hut. It's in a sensitive and complex area with heavy restrictions on personnel and working hours. OPW have said they needed high security cctv, reroute services and provide a complex M&E fit out, as well as provide temporary accommodation. Given the OPW don't do low spec (not gilded spec either tbf), the nature of the project, it's not at all surprising that it was as expensive as it was.

Whether it should be as expensive and was it value is actually asking a broader question about costs in the construction industry.
