Festy scored for Watford today against Sunderland. Didn't realise he was back in England.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,640 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Another goal for Adam Idah yesterday.

Big game away to Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday, likely to start on the bench but he’ll definitely be playing some part in it. Scales will start at lcb.

Has Delap definitely ruled us out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

He's supposedly ineligible for us now after his last appearance for England's U21s this month. Some talk though that FIFA are again looking at changing the rules around eligibility. Some cases that FIFA have ruled against initially were overturned after being appealed to CAS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,670 ✭✭✭DJIMI TRARORE

Literally just read the article, 3 u21 competitive appearances seem to have ruled him out

When's last time two Irish players had a 'tussle' in the Prem or EFL? Brady made out that Emakhu dived as Millwall were 3-1 up in 89th minute

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,640 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Don’t need him or want him. You have to draw a line somewhere with these things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

What a fanny Brady is. Has a pop off Emakhu for diving that's fair enough, but kicks him while he's on the ground and then falls to the ground when Emakhu reacts to get him sent off.

Wonder if he's trying to impress HH by showing he's not too nice and can be a bastard.

The sky sports video kept jumping for me so added this tweet that has the Brady part.

The famous Roy v McAteer tussle? Go write it in your book…………

Wonder will there be any surprise callups or omissions from the squad announcement on Thursday? Hopefully HH has picked the squad himself this time and actually takes responsibility for the whole thing.

Apparently there was a midfielder playing for Ipswich yesterday that played quite well; Jack Taylor. Options at centre mid would be very welcome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,113 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Nah prob the usual suspects will get picked instead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,199 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Might be his lack of starts that’s hurt him, seems to be a bit of a ‘closer’ for Ipswich, comes on for ~20 minutes every game, but rarely starts in the 18 months he’s been there.

Can’t say I’ve watched much/anything of him, but at this stage I’d be giving anyone new that plays at a decent standard a look, given the paucity of options we have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,538 ✭✭✭tigger123

I'd definitely call him into the squad and see how it goes. We need options in the centre.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,640 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Even with Cullen coming back in you've got Smallbone and Browne who are injured. Should be room for Taylor but might depend on whether they'd want someone with versatility to take Brownes spot.

McGrath and Azaz would offer cover for central and out wide areas whereas Taylor would only cover centrally. One thing Taylor has his in locker though that others don't is his shooting from distance. In general our lot don't fancy shooting from outside the box but Taylor has scored a few bangers from distance.

Brendan Rodgers doing Brendan Rodgers things in Europe....not a great night for the Irish lads at Celtic tonight

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,640 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Well you’ve asked a question so I’ll answer it even though it’s a more pertinent subject for the Celtic thread.

yep wasn’t a good night. Baffling really because Rodgers showed more pragmatism last season in the CL with a better balanced approach, there was a 6 nil drubbing away to Atletico as well but Celtic were competitive in the other games and dug in when we had to. I think after a flying start to the season Brendan made a huge error thinking we could go to to toe with Dortmund and beat them at their own game. We set up exactly the way a team specifically like Dortmund would wish. A big mistake and compounded by not changing it quickly. A sobering defeat and getting brought back down to earth hopefully will see lessons learned and applied in other tough games v Leipzig and Atalanta and others.

As for Adam Idah (seeing as this is the Ireland thread) when he came on the game was well done. I think he should have started the game and a more aggressive robust and pragmatic approach would have included him occupying the opposition defenders and using his physicality. Scales being part of a defence that shipped 7 goals obviously didn’t have a good night but he was far from the worst of them in terms of individual performances.

    Match day 3 up next.

That's the question with Idah still though isn't it? In an underdog team, is he capable of effectively using his physicality to win and hold the ball back to goal, and do anything productive with it. I'm still not sure he's great at that, despite his size. As you mentioned before, this game was an opportunity to see how he'd get on under similar circumstances - but it would appear he wasn't seen as the best option for the job. Atalanta, though they're struggling compared to last year (12th in the league), should be a bit of a test in the next round too if he gets the nod.

Tom Cannon with a brace and an assist from Moran as Stoke lead 3-1 at halftime.

Hat trick now. Won't do the confidence any harm. Plenty of praise on sky sports for him performance

Make that 4 goals. Lovely finish again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,473 ✭✭✭✭Liam O

Got his 4th there. Does strike me as our type of striker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,243 ✭✭✭Xander10

    Andy moran adds another

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Good night for us so far in the Stoke and Portsmouth game. Six of the seven goals scored by Irish players, O'Mahony scored for Portsmouth, and Moran with the assist for the other goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,936 ✭✭✭deisedude

I can't understand how Everton never gave Cannon a chance considering how poor their strikers have been for a number of years

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,640 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

There’ll be other opportunities for Idah in this CL campaign. At least 6 more games left in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,199 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

The relevent ones for this particular conversation are probably the Atalanta, Villa and maybe Leipzig games… hopefully he can show something in those.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,640 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Relevant in your head. All of the games could be relevant for Idah and his team unless the last one or two become dead rubbers for different reasons. No need to be structuring restrictive barriers around “particular conversations”.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Academy player so assume it's to do with FFP. Him and Simms were both sold in the same summer and would count as pure profit being academy products so maybe gives them a bit more leeway in bringing in players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,199 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

No, I meant relevant to the specific conversation we were having - of whether or not Idah has the skillset to play as a back to goal striker against teams better than the one he's in. This was your whole point, that he had been doing it well enough in Scotland, but obviously the situation is different with Ireland as he's not in a dominant side then. So you had pointed out that Dortmund would be a better class of opposition, testing that aspect of Idah's game. Your hope/presumption was that this would show he could actually do it against teams better than his own.

Unfortunatley he wasn't given the nod to play a meaningful part, so that question is still there. So the remaining similar situations will be Atalanta, Villa, and probably Leipzig, since Young Boys, Dinamo and Brugge don't really create the specific dynamic we've been discussing.

yesterday was just a hiccup before Idah secures the Ballon D'Or.

He has to pretend other players habe a chance or else it wouldn't be fair.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,640 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

    I

    Yes I know.

I don’t need to hope/presume, I already know he has the ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play using his physicality.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,640 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Quite a loaded sarcy comment about an Irish player on the Ireland thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,199 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Hopefully he'll do it in an Ireland shirt sometime so, as he's not done it so far. As already said, i'd feel better if I even saw him do it for Celtic in tougher games where they don't have it all their own way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,544 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

Is Cannon committed to playing for Ireland then? He's a grannyruler right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,538 ✭✭✭tigger123

He is committed, and he is a granny-ruler.

I think he may have been holding out for an England call up (which is more than reasonable considering he's English), but he's committed to us now.

Would be great to see him and Parrot included today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

    well Parrott will be included

cannon probably not as the squad was probably finalized earlier in the week before last nights exploits

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Mark McGuinness receives his first call-up as Jack Taylor, Finn Azaz, Jamie McGrath, Festy Ebosele & Mikey Johnston all come into the squad.

Liking the look of the squad bar LB obviously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Matt doherty being dropped is a bit of a shock unless there’s an injury. I don’t rate him but I’m surprised he’s dropped as I don’t see much cover in either full back position.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

My guess is O'Shea will cover at RB and that's why we named five CBs rather than four or we'll see 3-5-2 maybe.

Yeah the options at FB don't fill me with confidence because not a big fan of Festy as part of a back four, especially when our LBs are also two wingers. But at this stage I'd take a coat rack starting at RB rather than see Doherty in a squad again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 782 ✭✭✭RonanG86

I know he's only 18 and is playing in League One, but there's a case to call up Sam Curtis to fill the hole.

Having O'Dowda and Brady suggests we're probably playing back 3 / back 5 again, despite the fact that it hasn't worked for at least 3 years. I know we haven't got many options at left back, but surely it's worth going to a back 4 and sticking Scales there? Bring Enda Stevens as backup. I know he's 34, but he's back in the Stoke side and neither O'Dowda or Brady are spring chickens either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I don't know about Curtis. I like him but get Lee O'Connor vibes off him that physically his size and athleticism is gonna hold him back. Started LB in the last game and before that was dropped to the bench for a few games.

In his few starts there was some bright moments but has been bumpy for him. Peter Kioso would be a better option and is starting RB for Oxford who've started the championship season well.

If Brady or O'Dowda start I wonder if it's O'Shea who'll start at RB with Collins and Scales at CB. This could be the 02/03s last window with the U21s so Roughan and Garcia McNulty could become options as cover for LB too.

Neither of them are gonna break through at CB anytime soon so it's worth seeing if one of them could do something at LB if we had friendlies. Tayo Adaramola another who'll be overage after this campaign and he's starting at LB for Stockport in L1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

No Tom Cannon with the U21s which is disappointing if he's not in the seniors. Would have been nice to see him take a leaf out of Connollys book and use the U21s to get game time in a green shirt.

Also disappointing to see Aaron Ochoa with the U19s rather than U21s. He's starting regularly for Malaga in La Liga 2 in a position where we struggle. Can also play on the wing and some rumours in Spain that the Spanish FA are interested in him switching. Only turned 17 back in April.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,544 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

No Doherty at least but I was hoping I'd never see Robbie Brady in an Ireland squad again. Hope to see Azaz get some game time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,640 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Agreed. Fed up of this back 5 carry on. You need specialist wingbacks for a back 5 and we don’t have them. The formation should be deployed to suit the players we have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,199 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

We do arguably have more players suited to wingback than fullback though… we've basically no fullbacks at all, whereas Ogbene played realy well as a Premier League wingback all last season, and both Robbie Brady and Callum O’Dowda are definitely far more wingback than fullback. And obviously we're more stacked at CB than anywhere on the pitch.

I think 3 at the back can work - as long as we go 3-5-2, so the extra midfielder actually gives those wingbacks the license to bomb forward with the two centreforwards playing together inside. But 3-4-3 is a disaster - the wingbacks have wing forwards right in front of them, so its a bit redundant, with 4 bodies by the touchlines while the middle of the park ends up overrun with only our lone striker and 2 midfielders occupying all that space all the way to our defensive line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,029 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Yeah whatever about wanting to play four at the back because you prefer that but the argument we should play four at the back because we haven't got any WBs becomes redundant because we haven't got any FBs either.

The same wingers that are playing WB will play FB or we'll have to play CBs out of position. Now I'm not against CBs playing FB if it offers defensive stability but they'll offer nothing going forward.

Also if you go four at the back then you gotta make the call about whether you then want three in midfield or two up top. Because I doubt we'll see a midfield diamond or 4-2-2-2 type formation to get the extra midfielders and two striker playing together with the back four.

I still believe HH should give 3-5-2 a shot and if implemented correctly would be our best formation. Also along with Ogbene playing WB and looking impressive in some games there last season you've now got Festy whose starting RWB for Watford. Tayo Adaramola is starting for Stockport who switch between 3-4-3 and 4-2-3-1.

feel a bit if hope that it's more of a HH input to the squad. JOS seemed intent on bringing in as many of the old guys. A few welcome new faces that might step up to the mark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,862 ✭✭✭MacDanger

I don't like speaking badly about Irish players but I'm glad that Doherty is dropped, hopefully it sends the message that putting in a shift is the minimum expected of any player in the squad
