I hear Snyman is celebrating his injury-free run with a braai around his firepit tonight.

Handicap on Paddy Power is Leinster -14, I know Munster have some injuries but that sounds very wide to me.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,164 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Wonder how that relates to previous handicaps, seems awfully high for LvM match no matter what form either team is in.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,117 Mod ✭✭✭✭aloooof

The one from 2 years ago in the Aviva was about the same, if not a little higher, iirc, when Munster had a similar injury list to the one they have now.

It's the injury list as much as form that is influencing that spread, imo.

The Munster team announcement will determine if this will be competitive, if Haley or Nakivell don't make it Munster are in big trouble.

Not sure 'best tries' is accurate but a few decent scores in there.

It looks like they've just taken loads of recent ones….

No Big Joe. Hope he's not injured. Light on centres and back three players too.

    Strong 15 regardless.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,164 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Not thrilled with Luke McGrath on the bench.

Both Byrnes covering the backline….we'll want to keep the starting backs on the pitch as long as possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭FtD v2

WTF is going on with Robbie Henshaw? Hasn't been on any injury reports but has been virtually invisible so far this season. We could badly do with him here.

Not a good situation to have both Byrnes on the bench here.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,117 Mod ✭✭✭✭aloooof

    Munster side is in:

Munster: Mike Haley; Calvin Nash, Tom Farrell, Alex Nankivell, Seán O’Brien; Jack Crowley, Craig Casey; Jeremy Loughman, Niall Scannell, Stephen Archer; Jean Kleyn, Tadhg Beirne (C); Jack O’Donoghue, John Hodnett, Gavin Coombes.

Replacements: Diarmuid Barron, Kieran Ryan, John Ryan, Tom Ahern, Ruadhán Quinn, Conor Murray, Tony Butler, Shay McCarthy.

Nankivell and Haley make it. Tom Ahern on the bench. Shay McCarthy a little unlucky not to keep his place. A better team that I had hoped for.

Not being funny, but this Munster team is possibly less hit by injury/absence than Leinster are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,701 ✭✭✭snotboogie

Think this team is the best we could have hoped for:

Munster: Mike Haley; Calvin Nash, Tom Farrell, Alex Nankivell, Seán O’Brien; Jack Crowley, Craig Casey; Jeremy Loughman, Niall Scannell, Stephen Archer; Jean Kleyn, Tadhg Beirne (C); Jack O’Donoghue, John Hodnett, Gavin Coombes.

Replacements: Diarmuid Barron, Kieran Ryan, John Ryan, Tom Ahern, Ruadhán Quinn, Conor Murray, Tony Butler, Shay McCarthy

That must be one of the worst Leinster benches in a big game in a very long time?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,164 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Utterly bizarre. Unless he's gone for personal reasons and they don't want to mention it.

No Slimani or McCarthy I find slightly odd too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭FtD v2

For all the gnashing of teeth that's gone on about Munster's injury list it looks like Leinster's side is at least as scratched together in certain position groups if not moreso.

We've got a centre playing on the wing, two out halves on the bench and arguably our fourth and fifth choice hookers in the match squad (one of whom is an Academy player).

In terms of missing guys who would have been likely to be involved here Munster are missing probably Abrahams, Daly, Edogbo (I guess), POM, Billy Burns and Oli Jager?

Leinster missing Dan Sheehan, Ronan Kelleher, Joe McCarthy, Robbie Henshaw, Jimmy O'Brien & Jordan Larmour.

I don't see it as a 14 point game with those teams. We're one injury in the backs away from a fairly big rejig.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,962 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Can't believe that there's not a single outside back available who could bench over the Brynes. Utterly bizarre choice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,720 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

It's not that strange really. The majority of Leinster's outside backs are either injured or just finishing up with the Emerging Ireland squad. There's a few year one or year two academy backs I'm sure, but it's far too early for them.

There's some positional flexibility with the starting backs. So we won't be in a situation where Ross Byrne is asked to play at 11 or 14. If there's an in game injury to a wing or fullback we have all of Ringrose, Osborne, Frawley or JGP who could do a decent job there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Considering TOB and JOB are injured, and Henshaw is unknown, the only options it appears were either Aitzol King or Henry McErlean for the 23 shirt - or we could have gone 6-2 I guess.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,164 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

For a man who dislikes the 6-2 split, I'm at a bit of a loss as to why all of a sudden we are pushing for a 5-3 with that bench. Our selections remain incoherent (to me at least)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Both are probably a risk for such an important game - King is poor defensively and McErlean is very loose in possession.

For all the gnashing of teeth..

The "gnashing of teeth" was before Haley, Nankivell, Ahern and Quinn were named fit. There was no guarantee we'd have those guys. It was completely reasonable.

We've got a centre playing on the wing - so do Munster in SOB.

two out halves on the bench - that is an odd one, but they're both internationals. Less of an issue with the likes of Frawley, Osborne and even Ringrose playing.

Fair point about the hookers. Munster are light at loosehead and we need to start the transition away from Archer and Ryan, but can't with Jager and Salanoa injured. You can probably go back 10, 12 years when they were starting games against Leinster….

I think ultimately Munster are a good bit stronger than expected while Leinster are a bit weaker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Yeah. Both are also relatively inexperienced too - McErlean is only 21 with 3 games for Leinster. Aitzol King though is a year ahead of him, and has only featured twice for Leinster. As a Year 3 academy player, you would say the signs don't look great for him at this juncture.

He should have been in position to step in here, because there won't be many other opportunities this year you'd think where all of Tommy O'Brien, Jimmy O'Brien, Robbie Henshaw, Rob Russell, Jordie Barrett and Jordan Larmour will be simultaneously unavailable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Yeah I think the final sentence is fair.

On Sean O'Brien - that's not a like for like with Liam Turner. O'Brien played 20 games for Munster last season. He started 14 games and 10 of those were on the wing. He has lots of experience of playing in that position.

Liam Turner is his whole career has started 3 games on the wing total.

Saying Harry & Ross are both internationals is kind of irrelevant too to them being on the bench here. I don't necessarily have an issue with either one being on the bench, but it's the combo of having two of them as part of a 5-3 split that is problematic. Harry has played a bit at centre but has never been convincing there. Ross can't play anywhere else really given his physical limitations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,720 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Bench isn't as strong as I would've liked, but having Deegan and Baird available gives us a definite edge in the lineout. They're two brilliant counter jumpers and I hope we're targeting the Munster throw tomorrow.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,117 Mod ✭✭✭✭aloooof

I think that's reasonable fair on SOB vs Turner, but I'd liken it to Frawley vs Rory Scannell covering 10. I don't think they're comparable as regards cover for 10, say, which you previously argued (given Scannell had start 2 games in his whole career at 10).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭FtD v2

I don't remember the Scannell-Frawley debate, but would say it probably came at a time when Frawley had gone 3 clear seasons without being selected at 10 by Leinster at all. I don't see the relevance of it here though.

    Refereeing team for Saturday

    Referee: Chris Busby

AR 1: Peter Martin  AR 2: Keane Davison

    TMO: Mark Patton

We've avoided both Ben Whitehouse and Frank Murphy so already the game of rugby is on to a winner

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,720 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

The Frank Murphy thing is so unbelievably tiresome.

  • Subscribers Posts: 42,172 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

still a real possibility of a 6-2 bench as ross byrne sat out the captains run today.

    will connors took part…..

    just sayin'

Not a fan generally of 6-2, but I'd prefer that switch if it was an option.

  • Subscribers Posts: 42,172 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

not a fan either when your backs arent utility.

a 6-2 with McGrath and R Byrne send shivers down my spine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭FtD v2

I know, I was there that day, and he actually didn't do terribly, but I think he's actually deteriorated athletically since then even. It's a massive indictment of James Hume that he couldn't do more damage against him that day, as it was a relatively straightforward bonus point win for Leinster.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,164 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Well it would be McGrath and Harry which is slightly better. I actually think Harry would be decent emergency wing cover as these things go.

I'd probably rather 6-2 under the circumstances but the shenanigans are tiresome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,680 ✭✭✭RichieRich_89

It's hard to see where the gametime is going to come from for Arenzana-King if they won't even back him to bench in this situation. How is he going to improve as a player unless he sees some URC action? He probably would have been better off going the 7s route like JOB and Keenan did while he was in years 1 and 2 of the Academy. Unless he's going to get a development deal next year it might be too late for 7s now.

Yeah, he’s a bit of a disappointing one so far.

Clearly has great physical tools, but doesn’t look to have improved to any great degree since joining the academy. I’ve seen him play for Clontarf a few times too and he doesn’t clearly stand out at that level IMO.

Leinster have been relatively poor at turning good raw athletes into great back three players over the past few years I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,008 ✭✭✭CMcsporty

raining in Dublin. Hope it’s dry for the game.

Munster scoring first try would make this allot more intriguing.

Leinster could pull away if they get a few scores ahead early.

    Edit: sunny again!

Got very narrow very easily there - a couple of miss passes off nine to the outside man really compressed us

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,720 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

JGP is the best in the world at clearing kicks from the ruck. Gets so much distance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,429 ✭✭✭theVersatile

Clever from Lowe to take that quickly so they couldn't to back for that potential knock on.

Again, getting very narrow in D. Concerning

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,042 Mod ✭✭✭✭GoldFour4

looked like a clear knock on in the build up there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,720 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Munster weren't 10 metres back when Lowe took that quick tap either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 560 ✭✭✭mark_jmc

    blatant knock on missed

They don't have to be when it's a penalty on the five metre line.

Leinster are looking to absolutely destroy Munster here on the scoreboard & physically on the pitch
