RDB2 Burner stopping starting in a cycle

    hi all. Our Grant condenser boiler with a RDB2.2 Burner is not firing up properly. its stopping and starting in a loop, terrible smell of unburnt kerosene in the air.

    Things I have tried today so far.
    Cleaned Photocell with cotton bud - Photocell and black rubber shaft has load of black soot on it.
    Unscrewed Filter at bottom of Kerosene tank and a cleaned fair bit of crap off the filter and cleaned the bowl - put back , still doing same not firing up (well goes to light but then cuts out, goes to light again in a loop) - Radiators in the house are all getting hot still …

    Tigerloop glass bowl is all full of kerosene - tank has plenty of kerosene in it so not sludge at bottom of tank issue.

    Next I was going to try look for filter in the oil pump and give it clean if needed - then after that clean main burner jet filter just in case thats blocked or even replace main jet if needed.

    Am I going in right direction, anything else I should check or any other filters I have not mentioned?

    Sounds like is totally out of tune. Needs a cleaning, and pressure and air adjustment.

    Any smoke/blackness at the flue terminal?

    no smoke / just condensation plume when its cold outside temperature, inside of flue is black yes. when it was starting up no fume smell in the air , just only smell there now its not firing fully at the moment

    Could be a lot of things. Dirty filter on the oil line could suggest a build up of water at the bottom of the tank which promotes formation of sludge. This can also give rise to a partial blockage in the oil line.

    A faulty photocell can also do what you are describing.

    inside of flue is black yes.

    Get it adjusted before you have a right sooty mess. That sort of thing can snowball quickly.

    Thanks all, I think its sorted now - I went out, took off blast tube and cleaned electrodes and jet and its firing up now and staying fired up - hopefully fingers crossed that is all it was , I am just keeping an eye on it. - the electrodes where all carboned up and had what looked like a bit of cobweb or dirt or something between the gap in between them .
    only cleaned them up with contact cleaner and a toothbrush, I thought a wire brush would be too severe , I cleaned the blast tube thoroughly with a wire brush attachment on a cordless drill.

    That hasn't fixed your problem. What you described above would do nothing to fix the original problem.

    Anyway you have it going for now, so arrange a service as soon as possible or you'll be right back where you started and end up looking for someone to call at short notice.

    if this is an indoor boiler id leave it off until its checked over properly

    you could be producing dangerous levels of co

    Irrespective of the above, its a good practice to run any boiler for 5 minutes or so evey 10 days or so if not using it during the summer months, I regularly have to just remove the blast tube from my neighbours and give the electrodes a rub of a rag around this time every year since he's just too lazy to do the above.

    ya had it running all throughout summer (if you can call it that this year) - just heating up water in immersion tank, not radiators

    thats the plan soon - get it all tuned up . just waiting for finances to build up
