Faranfore To Dublin

A talking point in the Dublin Airport Cap has been that the Kerry Dublin flight may be at risk.

In an ideal world the rail connection would mean that this route isn't necessary.

Currently there is a daily direct a 3h 26m which is quite competitive and the rest being 3h 40m with 1 change, will this be improved by much over the next few years with new trains and infrastructure improvements ?

I'd assume the flight is used by people who take another flight from/to Dublin. Getting a train from Farranfore wouldn't be what they're after.

Its the same schedule winter or Summer, and transferring with Ryanair always involves collecting luggage and checking in again so I'd say while that use case exists it is a fraction of the actual.

While the flight remains a commercial/spite flight by Ryanair, the PSO alternative time won't come in play - three hours - which is what killed the Sligo PSO when track works improved train times.

Its not a PSO though, I'm more wondering how much will track works improve time.

If there is a higher capacity, greater frequency more comfortable option where luggage is unlimited the flight is unviable . I wonder how it is viable today to be honest

I know a few people who take this flight fairly regularly. You can walk into Kerry Airport 30mins before the flight, get through security and still have time for a pint! Plus it's usually always €20 so it's often cheaper than the train.

I can't see Iarnród Éireann doing much to rival that in the immediate future since they're always going to prioritise Heuston to Kent as it's their flagship service with a change in Mallow for Tralee, and the odd one or two services a day which go direct to Tralee with a switch onto a commuter in Mallow for Kent.

A lot of people these days travel with hand luggage only, so no need to check in again, you can go straight across to your connecting flight.
