I'd imagine this was a cost saving request by a customer. No mechanic would do that unless asked.

No self respecting mechanic would pay heed tothat kind of request from someone that isn't a mechanic.

Using old pads that don't have a flat surface will, amongst other things, cause premature wear to the new discs.

Depending on the car and when it's happening it could be normal. Discs can get surface rust pretty quickly when left wet over night and when you start off in the morning that's the grinding sound you hear, it should disappear as you drive and break a few times.

Toyota are usually good in fitments , on any parts supply they ask you details on the car you drive reg , model , engine size etc , this brings up your car when entered what items come up.

Notification of a maker change from one company to another from the brake system used in your model when choices are given.

Pad makeup if a car comes back with noisy brakes , sand residue off front of pad usually a glazed look and on surface of disc. Do easy braking to bed brakes in again for a number of a week.

Pad brand are known to make noise and might be needed to replace them for a new compound.

Toyota brake pads use anti-squeal shims. They can be fiddly to install. Is it possible that your mechanic didn't bother with them?
