New two-way cycle lane from George's Quay to O’Connell Bridge in Dublin

Shame that you effectively have no way of turning right from Westmoreland Street onto the two way cycle track, without going via the pedestrian crossings.

Other than that it's looking like quite the promising scheme!

I think it's just the constraints at that pinch point. You'd have to reduce the footpath width on the O'Connell bridge side and it's always thronged with people so I don't think that's realistic.

I think the only "safe" way to get to the cycle path is to cross the bridge and do a U-turn.

Surprised this is still happening. I would have thought they'd just wait till the quays car ban came into effect and build a proper 2 way liffey cycle route on the north quays

Yep that seems to be the case, which is fair enough.

This is just a segment of Liffey Cycle Route, it's not a new scheme.

The work is proceeding rapidly. I'm pleased to see the awful sunken section of riverside footpath at Burgh Quay has been reconstructed to remove the low-lying sections which are always full of water and rubbish.

That section and the section completely obstructed by a tree further back near the junction with Tara Street have always struck me as some of the most shamefully poor pieces of public realm in Dublin. Great to see them being improved, at least slightly.

Yes, the trees completely blocked the footpath (or rather, the footpath was probably narrowed too much).

The same issue was found further east but was rectified with the opening of the Rosie Hackett bridge.

    Looking great!!!

It looks nice, but I think I can see a gutter right up next to the wall. In the case of heavy rain How will we know if water flowing into that will have anywhere to escape to? Is there a hole in the wall, that lets the water out to the river?

I see they've poured some concrete kerbs on the roadway like a Dutch style crossing. Any idea if they will be opening this section in advance of the rest being completed?

Possibly the worst stretch of footpath in Dublin and also very busy.

This bit? A truly baffling failure of public realm. Squeeze in more car lanes sure, that'll solve everything.

if you'd asked me to sketch a map from memory I wouldn't have even recalled that there was a footpath there at all, I don't think I've ever walked on that side and its a route I would do regularly. Looking forward to using it when it's open.

Does anyone know what the programme is for these works? They seem to be making good progress at the moment. I see they're down as far as George's Quay with the concrete kerbing and they're currently adjusting the junction from Corn Exchange Place onto Burgh Quay.

I do look at that website every now and then. Strange coincidence that I posted my question around the same time as that article!

Still not clear on the end date unfortunately.

I don't think anyone knows when it will be finished, not even DCC.

Anyone know how this is coming along? Last time I heard some of the section on George's quay/Burgh quay might be ready for use and they're moving onto Aston Quay? Will be in the area tomorrow morning and would be nice to have it to look forward to.

Basing that off this vague update:

    Construction Update - 08/10/2024

Works commenced on Aston Quay in late September. All civil works on Georges Quay and Burgh Quay are now complete. Construction work is expected to completed on Tara Street by mid-October. All resurfacing work except on Aston Quay has now been completed. Work in is ongoing on Aston Quay to construct Taxi Island and Bus Stop build out.

It's still all blocked off, so you can look but cannot use, they are quickly progressing down Aston Quay and they are working on the Tara Street turn onto Burgh Quay, they are still working on Talbot Memorial Bridge onto Georges Quay too. They still need to upgrade/sort all the traffic lights along the whole section so I'm guessing it will be a while yet before its open.

The paving on Aston Quay seems to be progressing well. I recall an update recently saying that it will all be open by November.

Cool, passed by this morning. Looks to be fully surfaced but blocked off.

Hearing reports of of aggressive behaviour from taxi drivers and the like in the area against cyclists as the lanes look finished but obviously cyclists aren't using them because they're closed.

Poorly written tweet but I think he means it’s not clear where the pedestrian crossing points are in the new arrangement, so pedestrians are just going to walk on the bike lanes.

Why couldn't it just be a regular crossroads like pretty much every other bridge intersection along the quays? It's currently a mess of slip roads and traffic islands and this redesign doesn't look like it improves that by much

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,421 ✭✭✭VonLuck

Has anyone seen an official date for opening for this route? I thought it was roughly the end of November but I haven't seen a firm date yet.

Indeed, wtf inspired this design? It's a complete mess. And for what? It's one of the simplest possible 4-way junctions - all the vehicular traffic is one way meaning only 3 possible flows.

I guess, it's too late to hire a bunch of Dutch traffic engineers as consultants to design these things sanely.

Strange that this hasn't been opened yet. All the works seem to be completed. There's just one section at the end of the scheme on Aston Quay where the cycle lane finishes where I can't really figure out what's supposed to happen. Are cyclists just supposed to merge or is it traffic light controlled? Nothing installed at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,976 ✭✭✭cgcsb

Are the traffic lights modified yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,615 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

They are in the process of installing traffic lights at O’Connell Bridge and presumably will do so at Aston Quay next.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,421 ✭✭✭VonLuck

The length it's taken to these works always frustrated me. That other works to that junction have been finished for months now. Why couldn't they have installed those lights a month ago while they were finishing other sections? They are not dependant on each other and wouldn't have to be activated until the scheme was completed.

Very frustrating looking at a lovely nearly completed two way cycle lane alright when you're trying to squeeze between buses and trucks on Burgh quay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,421 ✭✭✭VonLuck

Looks like it'll be late January before it's open. Can't complete the works during the Christmas period apparently!

Good and bad news in that report title. The new late looks great, but given I'm coming in from the Heuston side, I'll be left facing a couple of potentially lethal spots (esp. joining Wolfe Tone Quay) for a few more years. Hopefully I won't have been run over by a truck by then :(

I took a spin this evening. Very nice. Though the treatment at O'Connell bridge makes no sense. There is no way to get from Westmoreland to the new lanes - I think this was already raised here or by IrishCycle. But it's worse than I expected as there are concrete curbs that physically prevent you from making the manoeuvre. I had to cycle on the opposite bike lane to get onto the new lanes. I thought the City Quay/Moss St junction was fine, despite concerns that some have raised.

However the Aston Quay bit is awful - it abruptly and dangerously runs out and directs you right back into traffic flow and buses. Better not to use it at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,143 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Isn't there a traffic light at the end of the Aston quay bit to allow you to merge safely?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 642 ✭✭✭noelfirl

There is; I don't think that part is that bad to be honest. It's overall a useful addition, albeit imperfect as usual.
