I am looking to plan a trip to London soon and will be using public transport. Can you use a BOI debit card on the tube/buses or should I just get an Oyster card. The reason I ask if I've tried to use contactless on other metros in Europe which accept contactless and couldn't and ended up having to buy paper tickets but in London that's not really option as its only Oyster and contactless.

Bear in mind you'll be charged the foreign exchange rate fees by your bank. If you have a revolut card (or similar) that allows you to have GBP "stored" in your bank account, it will use that currency and avoid the exchange rate on each transaction. You'll still get the conversion fee for the initial amount that you move to that currency, but it would be much better value than the likes of AIB/BOI.

Is there a conversion charge with Revolut? I thought it was just a good exchange fee, so better than regular banks? And no set debit charge like most banks. Think aib charge 40c per transaction or something.

Yes it's just the exchange fee (up to a certain limit depending on what plan you're on), but there may be an extra charge added on if the exchange is done over the weekend.

Which for a public transport charge will only be couple of pence, it's usually not worth worrying about.

  • You can also use your phone or watch, if you set it up properly.

Last time I was in London, I used both my Revolut and my AIB Debit Card on the tube (for identical fares at different times). The AIB transactions were slightly cheaper when debited back in Euro to my AIB account.

  • AIB's conversion rates aren't too bad - the issue is more just that you get a pile of transaction fees on the bill at the end of the year / quarter.

There's no issue using any Visa or MasterCard with contactless, or Apple Pay / Google Pay on the TFL system.

Just make sure you activate Express Travel Card mode in Wallet on Apple or the equivalent on Google Pay.

iOS will often prompt you to when you're in a city with the service.

both my AIB debit and credit card wouldn’t work on the London Underground? Card not recognised or something: worked fine before when in London. Different cards since then but not brand new or anything: any ideas? Card worked fine in a restaurant

also not working on local bus in Belgium- utterly ridiculous. Called AIB and bless the graduate on the line just told me their cards don’t work and that’s that! I gather they get regular calls about this

Exactly the same experience for me. And the same thing happened in Liverpool and Manchester (on public transport only). Tapped the cards everywhere in the UK, except on the buses and tube - ridiculous, and very disappointed with AIB

this is a big deal in the world we live as all public transport is tap on/off now. They should be communicating this to us as you could end up very stuck somewhere.
Thing was I used it before in London (Dec ‘22) and was no problem then? Something has changed

I wonder if this is something that Visa could help with or would be interested in knowing about: https://www.visa.co.uk/contact-us.html

Alternatively someone should contact TfL and ask them if they have any idea why it’s happening. Maybe it’s some new technical requirement that’s not being met by AIB?

I wonder would it work with the same AIB cards in Apple/Google Pay

Same issue here. Neither my AIB debit or credit card was accepted on London underground a couple of weeks ago however my husbands AIB debit card worked. Mine is relatively new as moved from UB whereas his is older. Had to use my brothers UK credit card as you can't tap the same card twice which is also annoying.

is your husbands debit card a bit older? Mine was replaced since Dec ‘22 and I reckon there must be some changes since then that AIB didn’t bother telling us about. Because it worked fine before. If you can’t tap on/off public transport abroad then their cards are as useful as chocolate teapots

My understanding of the AIB debit card is that there is a €150 'tap' limit per day on the classic cards (I think that's the bog-standard card). If you go over that limit during the day, you must perform a 'chip and pin' transaction for the 'tap' limit to be reset. Then you can go ahead and tap away, up to the €150. Perhaps some of the posters here, given that they were away maybe on holiday/business and were incurring other expenses besides public transport, had already clocked up €150 before they tried to tap on public transport in London, or wherever?

This is what I heard direct from AIB card department anyway.

If that is the case, then using Apple/Google Pay would bypass this issue as it has no limit on tap to pay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 107 ✭✭limerickabroad

No, that wasn't the case with me. In fact, just last week I got off the flight at Liverpool Airport and went to tap on at the bus. First transaction that day. Didn't work, had to go back to the ATM in the terminal for cash, and missed the bus. Had to wait 45 minutes for the next bus

Banks are able to however put a limit on the number of times that a card is used for Google Pay in a day.

Possibly though I haven’t run into it with Apple Pay + AIB, I’ve put many small transactions through it in a day and also put big multi k transactions on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,655 ✭✭✭✭road_high

no big transactions with me either. In fact I spent £30 in a restaurant two hours later and tapped away no problem. It’s an issue with their cards not working on TFL now which is pretty bad

Oyster remains an option in London and you can buy one at TfL ticket machines.

My wife tried to use her AIB card on the Underground and it was rejected. A staffer told her that AIB isn't accepted. Yet my AIB card worked via Apple Pay. So we just used our phones in the end.

We had a similar issue in the Netherlands. AIB card not accepted at rail tap on / tap off gates, worked on chip & pin at ticket vending machines. Ended up using Google Pay. I think it's just a way of ensuring you pay transaction charges for overseas payments TBH.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,655 ✭✭✭✭road_high

can you explain to me how to use Google pay on public transport abroad?

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 23,279 Mod ✭✭✭✭bk

Depends on the country/city. But Google and Apple pay basically work the same way [1] that a contactless debit/credit card do. If you can pay using a contactless credit/debit card, then you can do the same with Google/Apple pay.

You just add your bank card to Apple/Google pay on your phone and then when boarding hold your phone (or watch) against the reader.

[1] There are obviously some technical differences behind the scenes, which is why some physical might not work both Apple/Google Pay will.

Hopefully this sort of ticket payment will be coming to Ireland in the next two years as the next gen ticketing is rolled out.

Just a note to add that we tried to top up Oyster cards with PTSB in Victoria station and failed (but wife's AIB Visa worked).

But later tried same thing again but using the common machines at Victoria (in front of Gatwick Express platforms) and PTSB worked no problem. So it's hit and miss.

Apple pay worked fine for me using local buses in the south west of England- so this was a good workaround AIB cards not working
