Brill. Am deffo interested in A2A myself .We're not going full A2W heat pump

Remind me what the 5KW means, is it potentially 3.7 x 5KW of heat?

I have 3 x 400W desiccant dehumidifiers with a COP of 1.5 due to enthalpy of condensation, which are doing well during the milder days of autumn and spring. The living room is currently at 19.5C. An electric heater, running off the battery, will take over when the Sun goes down.

However, for the winter, I think a large A2A in the middle of our 150m^2 bungalow might do the trick with the wood stove in the living room for the very cold days.

As with @DC999 I won't entertain A2W. Far too expensive to take a risk on. A €1000 punt on A2A is acceptable. That can come out of our SSE FIT credit. Maybe an additional battery too.

I use a pair of EcoAir DD3 Simple dehumidifiers. More expensive than others but I prefer the rotary dials. No electronic controls, which means I can turn them on and off with Home Assistant. Also, they will be easier to fix, if needs be. I run them both in Eco mode to add to their longevity.

I have a Pro Breeze 10L as well. It's cheaper but the electronic panel prevents it being turned on and off remotely. Instead, that one is set via the humidistat, turned on in the morning and left to operate on and off throughout the day. If it breaks down then I'll have to rip the guts out and convert it into something like the DD3 Simple.

The EcoAirs are turned on and off via Home Assistant to soak up excess PV and/or reduce excessive humidity throughout the day at the north end of the bungalow. Anything between 55-60% is a success for them. At the south end, where the living room is, the ProBreeze can reduce humidity to 40% and raise the temperature to 19C.

The house humidity was up in the 80s before the dehumidifiers with black mould on window frames and blue mould on wood. Getting the PV was specifically for to run the dehumidifiers all day, every day. The bulk of our daily consumption (about 70% of 10KW) goes on dehumidification. Either the house is built on an underground lake or it's just damp around here all the time. Most of our neighbours have black mould.

As @graememk says, the lower humidity means any heating has less water vapour to heat in addition to the air space. In summer, desiccant dehumidifiers do raise room temperature with their heaters but that is more than compensated for by the 10-20 percentage point drop in humidity.

Desiccant dehumidifiers are much quieter. I can comfortably sit, even sleep, with one in the room. Three compressor dehumidifiers in the house would be too much to bear and wouldn't provide any heating but will make it easier to heat the air.

Yes, they do. Conservation of energy etc. but I like the additional heater in the desiccant type.

I pointed my IR camera at both types. The core of the compressor was hotter than the desiccant but it never found its way out. Probably just a small localised hot spot that dissipated and didn't amount to much.

So 9kWh used yesterday, the coldest day of the year so far? With the downstairs temp at 22.5C? That is very promising. My own house layout and our habits of leaving all the doors open is very similar to yours. How well is your home insulated?

Mine is a cheaply built Dublin suburb semi-D house from 2000, insulation is poor but we have made improvements, but not to our living room which is the coldest and does have a gas fire in the fireplace, is north facing and has a large poorly insulated bay window. I don't think I can get away with just one A2A unit in the large open plan kitchen / conservatory (and certainly not if I wanted to get rid of the gas fire in the living room)

I have plenty of time to consider it though as I am on a lucrative contract with Pinergy until September 2025, but this has only a 3 hour cheap rate window. I need either a 4 hour window or upgrade to 16kVA MIC to go be able to go air pump.

Very similar setup here, I will bide my time but I do like the idea of an A2A that costs many thousands less to install and will use only slightly more electricity per kWh heat output than A2W. I do have a lot of water to heat, so I will lose money there, but I also have a Kingspan 40 thermal tube system that provides a lot of hot water too

Saw it at the time, but the CRU is pretty toothless, will want to see the details of what plans the utility companies are actually providing. The timing is perfect for me though, just a few weeks after I am coming off contract with Pinergy.

Yep same here. And I have all my systems ready for it. Plenty of power and battery capacity here for charging and discharging. Between home battery, EVs and hot water, I have about 200kWh storage. The only thing I could wish for is a free upgrade from 12kVA to 16kVA by then 😁

BTW according to well researched analysis from Tony Seba and his organisation, Ireland is very lucky that for 100% renewable energy, Ireland will only need 60h of storage. Ths is one of the lowest figures in the world. That is 50kWh for every man, woman and child in the country in terms of today's electricity consumption, but this will drastically increase as we are electrifying
