Or maybe they had more information that you did!

    From 1pm……

"Feel good music, great prizes, and laughs"

I am guessing not many people are laughing!

If there are big changes coming, I wonder why it hasn’t been announced.

It’s an interesting approach to clear the schedule and not say anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 144 Upper Leeson Street

If you are getting rid of the bulk of your daytime line up, thats not something you want to shout about.

Andy, Debbie and Venetia have been royally screwed by the UK overlords and the devils deal done with Tubbs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭chilloutrelax

So the unsuccessful new show/presenter (Tubridy) leads to the other presenters having to leave…that takes some mental gymnastics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 hexikew971

There will be massive PR spin in the coming weeks about how Tubs had an emptiness in his heart due to being away from Ireland so came up with the idea of moving home to bring back The Full Irish.

So it is going 24/7 Tubridy plus automation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 807 ✭✭✭TheBMG

Less gymnastics than you might imagine unfortunately.

Is there networking actually coming? Because surely that would have to be approved by the BAI and there would be a record online of an application to do so? Or do these things just happen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭GSF

it’s ironic (or insane) that because Tubridy caused the ratings collapse, all the other presenters have to leave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭john457

If Tubridy goes to breakfast on Q102 that is fair enough. But if he is networked in Louth, Meath, Limerick and Cork, that is damn unfair. Us people up and down the country want our local radio stations to remain local.

With the freedom of speech now afforded to X, (formally Twitter) would there be push back on social media if it was networked?

Video didnt kill the radio star, but the UK overlords will..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 OnAirÉire

You only have to look at what happened to local radio statons in England.Ireland is heading in the same direction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭GSF

if the new government lets them do it _ Irish solution would be for the taxpayers to pay for local radio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭john457

I wonder would TD’s, both in government and outside, cause a fuss in Louth, Meath, Limerick and Cork and stop networking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭chilloutrelax

I thought you network the parts that need less of a local flavour e.g. the more music driven daytime shows and then have local breakfast and drive.

it seems that the opposite is being planned, which I’d imagine will be totally rejected in the areas the local stations are… the question will be how quickly it will be reversed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭GSF

pothole fm - sounds like a phrase we’ve heard before?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭GSF

you can be damn sure if local councillors and TD’s can’t go on live Fm or LMFM in the mornings they will kick up a mighty fuss about it - old people vote and elect TDs and listen to local radio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭john457

I think it would only be reversed if there was a concerted campaign on social media together with political pressure from the new TD’s and county councils.

I have no sympathy for the radio station owners. The government gave them a licence, in some cases exclusively with no local competition, to serve a local area.

I’d be fine with networking if others were allowed broadcast local radio but they are not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭chilloutrelax

so what is the new schedule meant to be and when does it start?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,590 ✭✭✭Tork

This shouldn't be allowed. The BAI impose all sorts of rules on radio stations, including ones which don't make sense in this day and age. Yet they're happy to sit back and allow local radio stations lose what makes them unique to their areas. Yet again, you've got to wonder, is there anybody in control of anything in this country?

Regarding Spin SW whose weekday regular programming is networked (except for morning and afternoon drive), it maybe more challenging for Wireless to replicate that particular set up across their network in Ireland. There are midmorning shows/presenters on Live95, 96FM and C103 for which are specifically targeted to their local franchises and could prove to be quite difficult to be just cancelled abruptly. In Q102's case, note that the breakfast show presenters have also been removed from the weekday schedule with Ryan Tubridy being the only presenter listed. Q102/Wireless may take a different approach from Spin/SpinSW and network/automate most weekday programming except for mid-mornings which would leave Q102 with one live mid-morning presenter unique to Q102. So if rumours are true and folks are in the process of being made redundant to make way for networking, who gets the networked breakfast slot? Tubridy? or does he remain with VRUK? If he does get a networked breakfast slot across those Wireless radio stations which would be broadcast from his self proclaimed "new chair" at Q102, who would be Q102's mid-morning/afternoon presenter? Liam Coburn? Who would be the Wireless network afternoon drive presenter? Maybe someone like Kathryn Thomas?

The morning talk shows specifically targeted to their local franchises wont be changed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭john457

Does this rumoured breakfast show finish at 9 or 10?

In Limerick the local talk show starts at 9, while over in Cork on c103 the talk show starts at 10.

So if everyone’s talk show starts at 9, that means an afternoon show at 12 till 3 and back to networking again at 3 until 7?

    Email your TD.

Outside of Boards I can't find anything about it online to be honest. I don't think Ryan Tubridy will leave the UK to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,881 ✭✭✭GSF

So who is actually on air today then on Q102? Apart from Tubridy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭chilloutrelax

Liam Coburn on breakfast (no Venetia and no jingles with her name)

The Tubridy from 10 to 1pm

Andy Preston was on his usual slot from 1 to 6pm

Conor Clear come 6pm to 12pm

    It all a bit mysterious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 807 ✭✭✭TheBMG

six hour shift! Last time I tried one of them was on Radio Annabel .. that’s some stretch

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 6,876 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

    Was thinking the same thing.

There's no way tubs would leave the UK to come to the likes of Q102.

Sadly networking is the future, look at Global/Heart"/Capital who sacked most of their drive hosts a few years ago (and moved the breakfast hosts to drive). Radio is sadly beoming more about so called celebs with shows rather than anyone with actual broadcasting talent.

Debbie had that for ages, since Andy came on I think. Latter hours v/ted, after the live news ends.

He'd be mad to come back to Ireland at this point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 144 Upper Leeson Street

Liam Coburn is a great jock and doing it a hell of a long time but when I heard him on brekkie this morning he sounded like he was forcing himself to be happy. It can't be easy, you work with someone directly/indirectly for so long and then you lose your job through no fault of your own, that can't be easy on him or the overall morale.

Incidentally, there has still been no company announcement of the job losses which is really poor form by senior management. The changes to the website were the first indication to many that something was happening.

I was surprised about Conor Clear, I thought Johnny Bowe would have gotten the fill in. It might be 6-12 but 10-12 is VT'd. Should dump Love Zone, a very tired format with the same 200 songs.

All male station? Not very PC. Maybe they should look at female talent, like Laura Whitmore?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,784 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Have you seen the Mid West Radio schedule in Mayo ?

Only one female presenter on the schedule with her own full time show, on saturdays and sundays

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,879 ✭✭✭its_steve116

Brendan Courtney would be a good choice for the breakfast show.

MWR is not unique, the gravitational forces of conglomerates such as NewsUK/Wireless and Bauer have pushed Irish music radio into a super massive black hole and Q102's status is a prime example, although Irish music radio was well on its way to that pinnacle of **** due to O'Brien's involvement and what later became to be Communicorp.

It is a horrible situation for any genuine jock to work on a radio station for which the format is pure drivel, where rinse and repeat playlists are the order of the day. Another poster indicated earlier that one of Q102's presenters sounded like they were feigning to be happy or interested. Well you can bet that presenter is not alone as that situation certainly exists at 98FM, Sunshine 106.8, Classic Hits Radio and countless other local radio stations across the country. There was a time when real radio people would have given their right arm to acquire a local radio license in the Dublin city and county area and would have appreciated the opportunity regardless of regulation. NewsUK/Wireless simply do not care - for them it's just another one.

Unfortunately, when those gravitational forces win out there is a point of no return and I think we may have reached that. For Q102, like the others Wireless are just out to maximize a return on their investment and in terms of the brand no matter how you may look at it you can sticky tape any name onto a bag of doggy poo - it won't change what's inside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,784 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

what is also unique about a real local station such as MWR is that it's not playlisted and remains HUGELY successful, holding onto listeners from neighbouring western and midlands counties who in an ideal world would be expected to tune into Ocean FM in Sligo, GB FM in Galway, Shannonside in Roscommon…but are loyal to MWR in Mayo.

As I type MWR, are live on air giving storm updates with the presenter in their main studio in Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo with the power out and the studio building is in darkness (as is most of the county), using the back up generator only for on-air power - while the other stations are on robojock or repeating this mornings talk show.

Now that's how local radio should be !!

When the Radio consultants/doctors are in the building, you know whats coming down the line. But some I've met seem to have bought the suit the same day as the latest "Dan O' Day book. You have websites where presenters get prep, all fishing in the same pond,so you get the same lazy content across the dial. The "How many % of men do blah blah blah every day" The agony aunt is big again,be it the "Beat Dilemma",or whatever its called on you local station, the same songs over and over again. One of the Radio Docs told me once "When you are getting fed up of playing the songs, the listener is just getting to like them"..Now we have radio courses to teach presenters..they all learn the same, and all sound the same.Radio they way we knew it is dying..Enjoy your local station while you can......

aren’t you the same lad who loved Atlantic 252 with its 25 minute rotations and wacky wacky jock names? And you’re giving out about rinse and repeat playlists? Here’s Kiss from a Rose .. again. Don’t go anywhere in case you miss Wayne Kerr and the morning fun bunch playing another loooong wave of Lisa Loeb

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 389 ✭✭nonetheless

Yes I suppose that I have really called out 98FM, but a re-reg with 3 posts who has followed me onto 2 different threads? I wonder who that could be 🤔

    No, you're supposed to say "I can't answer, I can't answer that..."

that doesn’t explain the mass cull in Q however. I’ve also heard the name Kathyrn Thomas mentioned and I wonder if that will simply be a pre-recorded show.
