RTÉ ONE, 2, Junior, and Player

I've had similar experiences with players , I bought a Sony tv about 15 years ago, it had the TV3player, the player wasn't updated and just stopped, likewise with a Samsung bluray, RTEplayer updated but the machine didn't support it. So I stick with the Now sticks for as long as I can. A neighbour bought a Toshiba tv from Tesco recently which doesn't have the RTE player, my one bought in Powercity does, is there that sort of software difference, I don't know.

The RTE excuse for the Samsung player demise was a masterclass in talking out of the side of your mouth. Not their fault, not Samsung's, welll..., maybe a bit, and not enough customer support (blame us), it's a wonder they didn't blame a Barter account, or Tubs.

With regard to RTE/ public service broadcasting funding model, it was announced in yesterday's UK budget that the BBC is to be given increased public funding for the BBC World service. I don't know the amount but in the past I saw a figure of £600 million, I don't know how yesterday's allocation will compare .

I suppose online radio has world availability, essential for expats maybe, but I doubt it would be included in hotel stream menus, like BBC. BBC World service on hotel TVs is the new Gideon Bible of our times.

VMTVs film rights are bargain bin - scraping the barrel ones, where they seemingly have about 20 made for tv movies and just show them every month for the past 4 years .No horrors within them.

They do show a mix of nature, travel and historical documentaries between 7-9pm some times. Whether they are of decent quality that's up to the viewers. Your example is very niche though in fairness.

Last nights Exit Poll special on RTE Two, must be the first time news and current affairs for adults was on broadcast on the channel since about 2017 ?

I don't understand why they don't use the News channel, it's available on Saorview, how widely available is it, is it on Virgin and Sky. I think l read on here that they had improved the picture quality recently and they could use the side bars for rolling graphics.

Was listening to radio 1 a while ago and they mentioned that morning Ireland wasn't been shown on the news channel, they were simulating rte 1 instead. I don't get the logic of showing the same thing on 2 different TV channels when they could have the TV coverage on rte 1 and radio coverage on the news channel.

Odd Xmas press release from RTE. Highlighting years old productions of Parks & Recreation, Office UK, Father Ted and Frasier Christmas specials doesn't give much hope for the rest of the schedule (despite them mainly being on the Player)

Young Offenders Xmas special will air on RTE1, despite the newest series not being shown yet.

RTÉ have put a proposal into the Department to consider the closure of their Digital Radio Station bar RTÉ Radio GOLD. Not sure when this happened, not sure if the +1's were included in the proposal.

This is old news as it was announced as part of the 5 year strategy to close them except for RTE Gold which I listen to a lot . Of course the Dept will have to consider this but you would imagine a revamped app to happen next year will probably cater for what's on them

Most if not all past RTE Radio network closures happened at Easter time, 2fm on AM closed Easter 2004, Radio 1 on 567 AM closed Easter 2008, DAB closed Easter 2021 and the longwave giant 252 closed Easter 2023, on that basis and the fact that they recently submitted a request to the department, I think Easter 2025 might be lights out for 2xm, 1Xtra, Jr radio, Pulse and Chill

So from that I would expect that RTÉ Digital Radio Stations will be on the air until Mart 2026.

Proposal only just sent in at the end of 2025, currently with the CnaM, most likely not a pressing issue for the minister or the department, hold on long figure until decision is made in September 2025, RTÉ start the closure process… March 2026. If the minister has made a decision.

I suppose the late application for closure at the end of 2024 will be blamed on the Minister and the Department and not RTÉ slow request to the minister.

There are possibly other forms but surely RTÉ could simple utilize their own marketing people for this. They have serveral market campaigns for all of their services running, or are this all designed by outside consultants!

After RTE's exaggeration fest during the cold snap, we had on tonight's news a school teacher who spoke about kids use of AI to do their ekker. He was captioned as ' X Y, History teacher and AI Expert'. He came across and sounded like Pat Short's teacher character. Apparently, he's 'in the AI space', so he claimed. If he really was an expert AI practicioner/systems developer/ creator, he wouldn't be spending his days muttering about the Reformation to a bunch of bored teenagers. Watch on Player and listen to the manner and tone with which David McCullagh closes the interview, and repeats the dubious credit, with delicious emphasis. Dave is an expert bullshit spotter.
