yr.no uses the ECMWF model that is the forecasting system of choice of choice for Met Eireann. In fact, the Met app produces the exact same 7-10 local area forecasts as produced by Yr.no.

Forecasting is difficult and far from a perfect science. It is made endlessly harder in a country that is an island on the edge of an ocean. When you hear a forecaster give multiple scenarios beyond 3-5 days regarding snowfall in Ireland, it's because of our geographic position and the consequent complications around nailing the extent and specifics of such an event, and a rare one at that.

As for your comment about poor driving by Irish motorists in wintry conditions, that is very unfair. Irish motorists are poor drivers all year round! 😜

I'm hoping more like rain and sleet until Sunday, (as I've a bit of driving to do) but next week looks a lot colder. I got the impression from RTE they were 50:50 on it for next week.

The 00z ICON Model brings the weekend low further north on Saturday afternoon with the system producing snow on its leading edge away from exposed coastal locations. A mix of sleet and cold rain by the coast and on the back edge (southern) of the system. It would likely produce snow in many places as it pulls away Sunday evening and draws in colder air behind it. An exceptionally hard situation to forecast specifics for.

GFS is a touch further north, similar to be ICON. It's so marginal that no forecast is going to nail this down in advance of the weekend. The colder airmass is no way as frigid as it was showing a few days ago so that may undermine snow potential. Pending a complete southward shift of the system, somewhere will see significant and disruptive snowfall. That's about as much as can be said right now.

the GEM is further south on its earlier run and is very similar to the ICON and GFS.

Will be interesting to see the ECM 00Z, the Merry go-round of the Northerly and Southerly track of the low is quite gripping. Ohs and awhs at the ready 😁

It also brings out the gobsh1tes who have no understanding whatsoever of the changeable weather patterns of an island country on the edge of the Atlantic. Something covered extensively in primary school geography.

As for drivers - it's the same in every country. If you don't get much of a type of weather, you won't have the experience to deal with it.

Go to las Vegas when it's raining hard - it's fun to watch drivers struggle with a wet road.

ECM precipitation approaching extreme SW 6am Saturday. By 9am some light flurries inland SW. By 6pm there’s nice accumulations for most of Munster. Come midnight most of country with at least a covering plus 10cm in places, then crazy accumulations for parts overnight up to 42cm is highest I see. Obviously taken with a pinch of salt but potential is there for a huge fall. Heavy snow showers in to the NW Sunday evening.

No harm for a bit of diversion and change in people’s routines.
Before the internet, snow was always reported by the main stream as nasty and unwanted , however since 2010 we saw that I wasn’t the only one apart from kids who loves the difference a good smattering of snow brings to everybody , good bad indifferent and over prepared.
It can be great! it , gets people talking who never talked before as neighbours, makes people inventive and kind , brings out ingenuity and paternal instincts, and even brings god forbid non weather people to the Boards weather forum .(time for a non technical snow thread ) ???????Apart from broken limbs I think very few people Died from snow in Ireland over the last 4 decades , also I don’t think it put too many out of business either, ( perhaps had the opposite local effect of boosting the value of local services) so down with that sort of thing please, hurray and begorrah for snow .

I even saw a comment from a high altitude Alps dweller, on a video of 10 ft of snow ,bemoaning the fact they clear the roads too efficiently in modern times even when they have an unmerciful dumping , unlike their childhood. Things get back to normal too quickly and they’ve lost something special.

So sorry for the livestock , but roll on the Craic, I’ll be out drifting as an auldfella.

Looks like a heavy wet snow (15-30 cm potential) for large portions of the nation, inland from south and east coasts, lasting on the ground for a week or so … but a lot of uncertainty remains. In larger cities around coast, likely to be a mixed fall leaving limited ground cover that would be largely gone by Wednesday.

Forecaster's best response is to book off sick.

I am quite interested in the arpege model due to its performance in November. There is a good upgrade on it for snow potential especially Sunday morning and Sunday evening with anywhere in inland Munster being the sweet spot. It even gives a couple of hours snow to the south coast as it pulls away.

Met Eireann all in on text forecast

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,916 ✭✭✭hawkwing

    met.ie—

Tuesday night: Apart from a few lingering wintry showers in the north, it'll be dry on Tuesday night with clear spells. Freezing fog will form, becoming dense in places. Extremely cold with temperatures expected to fall to between -10 and -3 degrees in light variable breezes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 230 ✭✭Condor24

They sure are. Where snow lies, we could see lowest min. temperatures since 2010. Could be extremely low max temperatures too mid week . I'm getting a fill of oil before the weekend anyway, before the rush. How certain is this cold weather? Getting near nailed on, not quite there yet though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,508 ✭✭✭munsterlegend

Their forecast looks great away from the South and Southwest where more rain is likely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,095 ✭✭✭TheMilkyPirate

The cold weather is absolutely certain. It's the snow and where it falls is what's up for debate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,240 ✭✭✭squarecircles

Holy hell, the met Éireann forecast is baltic, disruptive significant snowfall, bitterly cold, - 10 at night, - 5 in the day, wow.

coasts it said at the start., it’s a typo I reckon, snow in north cork 50 odd miles from any coast. 😎😎😎

save the trouble and jazz it up

surprised they mention only the south and south west coasts, for falls of rain, you’d imagine the east coast also considering onshore winds?

This is going to be absolutely sickening for us Corkonians.

The best part will be staring out the window at baltic rain. I'd actually get over it if we just stayed dry instead 🥲

Advisory out for the weekend now. Seems sensible as there is still much uncertainty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,408 ✭✭✭✭leahyl

is it really looking like freezing cold rain for Cork at this point? :-(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,508 ✭✭✭munsterlegend

Along the coast yes very much so. Inland a better chance as always. The track of this low is still a bit debatable though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 254 ✭✭Thunder87

Snow showers in Donegal this morning.

Not sticking (other than on the hills) but still the first snow flakes I've seen all winter having spent Nov/Dec in Dublin

North of the City might, but might location 5km from the coast I highly doubt it.

Just read the met eireann forecast. Holy cow! They are all in. Haven't seen a forecast like this in years. Usually love this, but two sons flying out on Saturday. Hoping the bad weather waits till they are gone! Based on what I'm reading here they will just be OK....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,066 ✭✭✭giveitholly

A low of -2c overnight,Beautiful clear blue sky this morning, and so it begins....

If they fly out early then they should be ok. Worst of it is to hit the early hours of Sunday

Rain shower has turned to light snow. Rain fell on frozen ground and roads like glass now. West roscommon.

Met say: "this weekend.. significant accumulations of snow likely"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 199 ✭✭Ros4Sam24

Gfs 06z giving nearly 24h of snow in the north midlands, with a good dumping in the north and northwest too. North shift have been creeping up on us and all models are coming into line in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,186 ✭✭✭wazzzledazzle

Almost certain to be the first proper cold weather event in over 5 years. There will be plenty of snow but too difficult to tell who'll get what for now. What is certain is freezing temps nationwide. My prediction is that all except coastal area's in south and east will see snow and plenty of lying snow come Sunday afternoon.

Bright winters morning out there, -1 N Kildare

I've just looked at the models. It looks to me as though the High Res models have this further south than the main models. If I'm reading Aperge etc correctly I think that, far from being the worst place, Cork city could do well out of this. Remember Cork city and suburbs aren't on the coast (they just look it because of the size of the harbour). The warmer air here is travelling up from the SW. The harbour is east of Cork city so doesn't really affect things here that much. In terms of the actual southern coast from where the precipitation is coming (forgetting the inlet of the harbour) even Cork city is probably 25 km inland from Kinsale which is due south of it - so that precipitation is travelling over 25km of land before hitting Cork city. See map below. Moreover, virtually all cork suburbs are on hills. In my experience its rare you'd have snow in, say, Watergrasshill (15km north of Cork city), but not where I am in suburbia (Rochestown). There are definitely occasions you'd get snow in north Cork itself (say Mallow / Mitchelstown which are well north of the city) but not in the city, but I find in general that the marine effect on Cork city and suburbs isn't as pronounced as people think.

See Aperge for Sunday showing the northern most extension of the warm air from the front. It barely gets to the Cork/Tipp/Limerick border. The same line on ECM and GFS is running from Galway to Dublin.

    Weather Advisory for Ireland

Sleet and snow in places this weekend, with some disruption possible.

A spell of rain will spread northwards over Ireland during the course of Saturday, turning to sleet and snow in some areas. Rain, sleet and snow will continue for a time on Sunday before clearing eastwards into the Irish Sea.

Significant accumulations of snow are likely in some counties.

    Potential Impacts:
    • Hazardous travelling conditions
    • Travel & service disruption

    Valid: 00:00 Saturday 04/01/2025 to 00:00 Monday 06/01/2025

I better head to the shop soon for a week's supply. We're up in the Knockmealdown's, 10km from the nearest town and will possibly be cut off for a couple of days. If it's not snow it'll be treacherous icy conditions which will make our roads lethal as that 10km is never gritted.

We have a 1978 ursus tractor on standby as backup in an emergency 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,002 ✭✭✭BLIZZARD7

I am very glad that we have this event/spell in peak winter, may just give us the edge in terms of marginality. Not super hopeful for much in Dublin/low lying eastern/southern coastal counties, but if winds go offshore for any decent length of time (a micro secondary low could aid this) - it could be game on for coastal or near coastal areas, this would require some luck though.

Met E obviously not ruling out this possibility yet, and nor should they at this timeframe - based on their text forecast I also think think they see the northern boundary of the milder air incursion at the weekend as somewhat further south than what guidance is currently suggesting.

Some chance of further snow opportunities after the weekend but will likely be largely dry and cold until another low approaches…

Interesting times for sure, likely the coldest January period since 2010 - central counties will experience proper winter conditions with bitter temperatures to follow - and anywhere could see some snowfall at times.

Cant beat a bit of Cork optimism! Will be interesting to watch but expecting rain or sleet mix. The time of year might be in our favour though

This is genuinely one of the trickiest setups I have seen for those on coastal regions, I've been trying to compare data of this low to March 1st (as Dublin suburbia did quite well) with a similar setup, honestly very confusing where the snow to rain line will be with shifts in wind direction, the 850's and the DP temps.

I was also considering the idea that its possible for transpiration to occur if the rain is heavy enough & the wind direction shifts as the low pulls away. (akin to March 3rd 2019)

I'm most likely wrong though and I am expecting rain here, but a really interesting forecast for Sat/Sun regardless…

    Morning all!

I always check out this forum when there's a chance of snow. It's good craic and I appreciate the knowledge in the group. Last year we were heading on holiday on Jan 18th. On information I gleaned from here I booked a hotel in Dublin for the 17th as I thought roads would be bad in Donegal. But roads were clear on the morning and we cancelled the booking only to be caught with a snowfall on the way to Letterkenny and nearly crashed. (BMW is not the car of choice in snow!) The night bus was cancelled and we missed our flight.

We are heading away again on Tuesday and I can't believe we are in the same scenario 😯 This time we are flying out from Belfast. I'm relying on you guys to keep providing the information from the models so I can try and be prepared!

Thanks for all you do 🙂

The 06z Arpege is just rolling out but the 0z almost had this as a Munster focussed event (albeit I note the point being made that Arpege may overdo how much snow is actually lying…) - see below

Ticket purchased, this is what we are all here for. Looking forward to the development over the coming days. Nice frost here in Galway this morning, just had a light passing shower of icy rain.
