Note: Course schedule updated 14/01, see updated table below!

Apologies to all for the slightly delayed post for our 2025 iteration of the Boards.ie Golf Society. Had hoped to get it out before 2025 started, but my Christmas week has been one of sickness and lack of sleep. Everyone in my family has had pretty much every illness you can name, and getting anything done has been a challenge. But golf sleeps for no man, and lets get the ball rolling on 2025.

Start off by saying a big thanks to @Alanm for the nomination as Captain. Last year was a cracking year for the society, with some excellent golf and another year retaining the Jug. Not sure i'll be as thankful to him after having to run all the below events, but sure i'll just delegate to the committee as much as possible. Speaking of whom, thanks to everyone on the committee for carrying me through the upcoming golf year.

As per usual, here's a bit about me, since i know you're all dying to read this 🤣 Been playing golf since i was a teenager, when my dad took up the sport and both myself and my brother joined the Curragh as Junior members. Loved going up during the summer back then, playing 18 holes, then getting chips sausages and a pint of blackcurrant for lunch, then heading out and playing another 18. The joys of youth. I kept playing into early college years, but lack of time and beer money made me drop the sport completely, only picking it up again in the last 5-6 years. A friend of mine offered me a set of TaylorMade Aero Burners, and quickly fell back in love with the game. Played in Tullamore for a year, then Ring of Kerry for a few years, and am back home in the Curragh now. My dad is also a member there, and getting to play regularly with him is priceless.

I also joined the society at some point in the last few years, and am pretty sure I've clocked up more mileage then anyone else, certainly in 2023/24. For anyone on the fence about joining, its absolutely worth it, and you will not regret it. 2023 was my best year, earning a spot on the Jug team that went 6-0, but last year was a struggle to get out and play with my 2nd daughter born in April. Getting out was tough, and not being exhausted was even tougher 😴 I was looking forward to 2025 until i got dragged into running it this time, but sure if my golf starts to suffer i can just cook the books a bit 😗

Anyway, back to what you all want to read about, below is our schedule for next year. Tried to get as many courses as i could that we haven't played in the last few years, with only Portmarnock and Arklow being repeats i think. One or two later tee times as well, but hopefully not an issue for anyone.

    *-denotes change from original schedule.

Great 1st post as Captain @Kiith and the very best of good wishes for your year.

Fantastic selection of courses, I have only played slightly more than half of them, so lots of homework and exciting times ahead.

I presume accommodation will be arranged for the overnighter in September, have every intention of being right in contention and earn my spot by right not misfortune this time around so will defo be up for overnighter.

Dont worry too much about not qualifying for Jug, sure you can follow tradition with your picks😆..tho I suspect you wont need to.

Again, best wishes and let the good times roll, and above all, enjoy your year.

Thanks a million Captain @Kiith and all the committee for organising such a great list of courses for this year. Unsurprisingly for me I’ve only played Portmarnock before (with BGS last year) and believe me that is no hardship getting an opportunity to play such a beautiful course again. All the others new to me so very excited. Just read them all in “Hooked” and looks like some real gems to discover. Best of luck in your captaincy this year, super start.
Look forward to seeing everyone next month.

Happy new year everyone. Excellent first post @Kiith captain. Lovely selection of courses and some new ones to mark off my to play list. Really looking forward to this golfing year.

great list of courses @Kiith ! Can’t believe it’s only about 5 weeks away from starting again.

@bobster453 must be gutted that Corballis didnt make the list.

Best of Luck for the coming year Captain. 3 maybe 4 new courses for me to hack around this year. I'm looking forward to them already, Hard to believe we are nearly ready to go again.

I wouldn't stress too much about the organising on the day. Clubnet was a gamechanger in the past few years, gone are the days collecting money on the day, paying bills and getting abuse because someone had a 2 but never entered the comp.

You'll have major back up in Seve and Space who never fail to step up.

    Enjoy, it's a great year.

Good luck for the coming year Captain Kiith.

There's a bit of work ahead, but it's rewarding work and I think you'll get plenty of enjoyment out of the year...even if your own golf at outings might suffer (the Captains curse) 😄

A lovely set of courses there. Some that are overdue a return (Portumna, Curragh), others new to me, (Fermoy and Woodenbridge).

As always, looking forward to another great year of golf with the society, and the battles for GOTY and the Jug

Great post @Kiith and good luck for the year.

Fantastic list of courses with 5 new for me which I'm really looking forward to. See you all in a little over a month for Round 1

Its been a long winter but the 1st post of the year about the upcoming season always makes things feel better. A nice spread of courses from our new overlord @Kiith . A few I've played and a few if heard only good things about, so looking forward to some new challenges.

Here's to another good year of golf. Hoping to get out a bit more myself this year (last year was an awful golf year outside the society) and to be a bit more competitive.

See you all in a few short weeks

2024 was my first year back playing golf after 2 back surgeries. I didn't rejoin because I was not really sure what to expect from golf, but it turned out pretty well. I joined a club and was able to play a good number of times. I am planning to join a different club this year, but I do have an established handicap that should be in good standing.

I want to rejoin the boards society for 2025 (great looking group of courses, I have played most at least once). I am not sure what the process would be? I have a clubnet loginthat appears to be tied to the boards.ie golf society. When checking invoices I see a 2024 invoice for 35 euro. I am guessing that is last year's invoice?

Lovely balance of course there captain - a mix of links , heathland , parkland etc.

In fact must be most links in a year ever. (well Roadrunner did have a Links swing - but think that mix might have a slight lead on that year)

2 great courses for captains - and courses all can enjoy and get around the place . Interesting that there are 2 totally different styles of golf for the captains weekend - a new and very successful concept from last year.

Tricky year for me - have an injury I'm working on , but not a quick fix thing.

Hope to see ye all at some point. For info, I'm not on committee this year, a few things on, outside of golf and injury doubts - looking forward to being a hurler on the ditch and looking for my 2s money every time I go out. Also a few shots more, someone to get my food from the kitchen and tell me what time my tee time is that I booked and am late for.

Anyone looking in - a must join. You meet fantastic golfers who love this game and get great access great golf at great value

Best of luck on the year ahead @Kiith . Potentially one or two I won't be able to make this year unfortunately but can't wait for it to start back and delighted to see it is only a matter of weeks. Going to need to put in a bit of work to the game back in good order and Portmarnock will be an excellent test to kick it all off.

Thanks for all the hard work through difficulties and illness @Kiith. Great list, can't wait to get started!

Actually Corballis and Macreddin @awec ..happy days😆😆

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,073 ✭✭✭paulos53

That is a great mix of courses.

Rathsallagh and Portumna are two courses that I really enjoyed on my only visit but it has been years since I played either of them.

3 new courses for me in Seapoint, Grange Castle and Curragh. I do have good memories of playing Seapoint Pitch and Putt club and had one of my best ever results there before switching to golf. I am taking that as a sign of a good round for me that day 🤔

Fermoy is a bonus as it is the nearest course to my house. Approximately 4km as the crow flies. However it has been at least 3 years since I last played there. The greens are usually in brilliant condition there.

Great Post @Kiith. Some great choices of courses. Really looking forward to this year. I'm constantly playing the game looks like it's starting turn slightly for the better. I'm delighted not to see corballis on the list😂

Great to see the list for the upcoming year and Title defence!5 new courses for me I think, although 1 or 2 dates clashing this year so hopefully can make the most of the outings.

Well done @Kiith and hope you have an enjoyable year ahead.

Well done Captain Kiith and Co for putting together such an attractive fixture list for the year. I've only played two from the list - Portmarnock links which we're all familiar with and Woodenbridge. Woodenbridge is an absolute pleasure to play - one of those really enjoyable rounds. Plenty of challenge, but out to get you. And it's a beautiful setting in the valley.

Of those I haven't played half them are on my (admittedly long) shortlist of courses to play. Seapoint - supposed to be a lovely links not far up the road from me. Rathsallagh was my wedding venue, so has been on the list since, I just haven't managed to get there. The Curragh I've heard wonderful things about and Portumna is constantly referenced when talking about the best parkland courses in the country. And Grange Castle and Arklow supposed to be terrific tracks too. I don't know anything about Fermoy, but courses you don't know anything about can turn out to be the most enjoyable.

But alas, pink note has fallen pregnant again. So I'm hoping to make the first three outings. The next two not a chance for me. I might chance my arm and see can I get to Portumna, but highly unlikely. And I will try to make at least one of the Captains weekend days. But if I get to play as much as expect in the year what I miss out on in terms of rounds I'll make up for in shots.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing you all in the links in February. I definitely intend to stay for pints after too!

    Hi all,

Looking forward to joining this year. Having been involved in and run a weekly society abroad for many years, I really miss the society golf.

I’ve not played any of these courses on the list although an attempt to play Fermoy was scuppered by car trouble last month.

There’ll be a bit of travel for me for these courses with Fermoy being the closest to me, a mere 10km but I look forward to the days out.

    Looking forward to meeting people.

    RHg.

Welcome aboard. Great craic, great slagging..but serious trying to qualify for the Jug.

    Great bunch of people involved.

    Mad they are.

I am the only sane one 🤣🤣

Great list of courses @Kiith. Played 5 of these but surprisingly, never played Fermoy. This was from Kevin Markham recently:

“Laced with pine trees……heather strewn terrain” - might bring a few extra balls that day 😀

Very accurate description, surprising the greens are not highlighted as much here as they are normally hard and very fast.Approach shots can be very tough in the height of the summer ……so i would expect it to be good in August.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,703 ✭✭✭blue note

It's one of the great things about the society that you'll end up playing great courses that you might not otherwise have heard of. It's even a positive about the cost of golf going up that there's more of these courses on the itinerary these years. You'll always seek out the likes of carton house or druids glen, but you might never play the likes of fermoy or nenagh if they weren't on the list.

Now when the pendulum swings the other way and the cost of golf goes down that'll be a positive too. Variety is the way to do it. We should all play corballis and the island, adare and adare manor.

It's a great selection, I think a few will be surprised if not played them before, Fermoy and Curragh are quite hilly, Fermoy back 9 is super.

Just because a course does not feature in any Top 100 listing does not mean it is not good, I often question what's the difference between a course "ranked" say 82 and 99, probably nothing so therefore what's the difference between say 92 and 142?

I'd be wary on the opening stretch of Woodenbridge, those holes are very close and wayward shots through trees are dangerous. The view looking up the valley is fabulous on a clear sky day.

I've played them all multiple times and like last year due to personal factors won't be able to make it this year but here's hoping we get some cracking weather and the courses present themselves well.

    Play well and enjoy!
