Were they really though? I don’t see a Strawberry sweet there…

Obviously they were but it would be good to figure out the peak year(s). Since that pic is missing both of the top 2 - Strawberry and Turkish Delight it clearly wasn’t a peak Roses year.

I was referring in the main to the quality of the actual chocolate compared to the muck that’s classed as chocolate in the roses currently.

Looking at the cupboard and we have way too much junk left to eat, with the quieter Christmas we haven't done any real hosting so haven't had a chance for guests to make a dent in it. Trying g hard now to get back on track food/weight wise so can see my work colleagues having g to step up this day week!!

Just seen online that since 2006 quality street have gone from 137 chocolates in a tub to just 67 this year. Scandalous.

I say this every year but because my wife works in a crèche she gets tons of sweets, biscuits etc. We try gift some but we always have tons leftover. I have to organise them all in order of best before date and work away on them. Some years we get until late summer out of them. We just tip away at them and don't have to buy biscuits or chocolates for a long time. If people come over they are always out as well.

TBF I am sure they are only about half the price or less in real terms

That’s why they can sell them so cheaply. That and the fact that the quality of the ingredients is not a fraction of what it used to be (that’s most chocolate nowadays, not just quality street).

This is the first year where i didn't buy Rose's, there is something wrong with the chocolate, it comes across as cheap tat. I bought a large bag of mini twirls and they were the same. Celebrations and lindt were the winners for me this year.

No Roses here this year either. Lindt always a winner in my eyes well worth the few extra €€€

I have to admit I bought none at all this Christmas, not even a tin of biscuits. It's all just sugary poison.

we had the supply of tins of roses, Heroes and Quality Street. Utter muck these days. half full remainders thrown on the fire to get rid of them.

It's been like that for a few years now. won't be buying them next year no matter how cheap.

I gifted some Quality street and received a box of Heroes from a friend in return. Unfortunately I would say the same now about the Heroes, they were awful.

In a Lidl on Tuesday afternoon and they had Victoria boxes piled high 2 for €8.00.

I didn’t buy a tub this year and more than likely I won’t buy again this year

My other half picked up various chocolate stocking fillers that were expensive but I would definitely lean towards them next year

Far better to buy smaller amounts of the more expensive higher quality chocolates. At least they are enjoyable to eat.

Better than spending weeks trying to force down large amounts of disgusting Cadbury and other cheap brand junk.

I used to be a fiend for Roses, absolutely loved them. But I haven't bought any at all in the last 2 years, they are just awful, its hard to be addicted to chocolate these days, its like sweet fat that's all, no taste of chocolate. Ditto Quality Street, Heroes etc.

The great thing is that there is no big issue for me anymore putting on weight at Christmas. I ate very little sugar this year and luckily for me I was never a fan of biscuits so never bought any. Yes some mince pies and a bit of Christmas cake but these were home made, not the rubbish in Lidl and Aldi. Food quality is getting worse.

I was offered a Roses in a shop the other day and took what used to be a walnut whirl. It tasted of nothing. Even the experience of opening one is gone now that they are all in that cheap tatty wrapper . I really miss the old ones but my waistline doesn't.

We didn't buy any tubs this year. Instead got a few boxes of mixed lindor. Much nicer.

Got a present of box of Lemons which was a childhood favourite. Muck !! Pure cheap sugar. Tasted a few then threw in fire.

I have so much rubbish here still. I bought absolutely loads because I knew I was going to have loads of visitors but I make a lot of homemade stuff and everyone ate that instead so I'm left with tubs and tubs and they're horrible. I also have Dairy Box, Black Magic, After Eights, Ferrero Rocher, Tea Cakes, Walnut Whips and loads of biscuits that people brought over. I don't need to buy any sugary stuff for months! This year I'll buy a small amount of high quality stuff. The Ferrero Rocher is nice and as others mentioned Lindt also. Leonidas and handmade Irish chocolate.

Of the tubs I think Celebrations are the best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭caviardreams

Definitely. Wish they would change up the varieties a bit mind - swap out milky way for an M&M one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,163 ✭✭✭✭DvB

We had quality street in the build up and all agreed after years of them being our favourite that the quality had definitely dropped and that celebrations were the best nowadays.

In saying that we only went through 3 tubs in total (2 QS and 1 Celebrations) which was easily the least we've bought in years. Can't see that changing next year as there's better quality out there.

Sad in a way, but what can you do.

We had the same chat in our house, we are not going to buy any of the tubs of sweets anymore or even boxes of biscuits either. We received tubs and boxes of biscuits as small presents from people anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,008 ✭✭✭jackboy

It's much better to buy a small amount of something tasty and enjoyable. Quality beats quantity.

Cadbury and similar have gone down the road of cheaper and lower quality. People are getting caught out with the low prices but that will just be successful in the short term. The fact that most children no longer like Cadbury will only end one way for this and similar products.

There's still two tins of syrupy gloop pseudo chocolate left in the house, uch!

    🙈🙉🙊

I must say, I know they're not in the big tubs like Celebrations, Roses or QS and work out somewhat dearer, but the chocolates in Aldi are to die for, especially the round white truffles (they're very similar to Butlers or even Lindt) and the truffles shaped like a drop and covered in cocoa powder (extra bonus points if they're the orange flavoured ones). I'd have one of their white truffles instead of 10 of the Cadbury/Nestlé ones. (I know, I say this every year…).
