Eamon gave the impression that Stanage predicted a Trump win. Stanage got more rooted to the fence the closer we got to election day.

Fuming in private? He was audibly disappointed and distressed at the results, but not surprised. I think plenty of people feel them same way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,766 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

To be fair to Eamon he was the only person on any platform I listen to who called the result from way out. He may be a liberal, but at least he's not a blind one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 161 ✭✭Lecter8319

According to you. Trump won the popular vote in the US and many in Europe and even Ireland are happy he won. He's had a one sided view over the last number of years reporting anything negative he could about Trump while failing to address a lot of the issues & concerns around Harris & Biden. So dont try and make out he was in anyway but very biased against Trump and now that hes won, is anything but seriously unhappy about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭choosetheend

Of course he's biased against Trump! And of course he's unhappy! I don't think I implied otherwise. The idea that he's fuming in private is ridiculous when he was openly dispairing at the thought of Trump taking the presidency again.

Trump is a horrible person and makes for a lousy president. You don't have to be a fan of Harris or Biden to think that.

His derangement about Trump is getting tiresome. I guarantee half the things he's worried about won't happen. Might be interesting if he had someone on who discusses why the Democrats failed so badly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,522 ✭✭✭Westernview

If you think someone who is critical of a man who sexually assaults women without remorse and regards climate change as a hoax is deranged them it's a very sad reflection on you. Might as well put on a t-shirt that says you don't believe in either decency or education. The flat earth society are always looking for new members as well if you're interested

Honestly all this end of democracy doomsday stuff is getting old. He was already there for 4 years the world kept spinning. Eamon has become more negative as time has gone on. He seems to really believe the world is about to end. He should relax more and go back to discussing the football a bit more. He's becoming harder to listen to, I skip a lot of episodes now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,522 ✭✭✭Westernview

As i mentioned he is more concerned with other issues around Trump than threats to democracy. It is to his credit that on the latest podcast he conceded that he hasn't covered enough on climate in the past. He clearly wants to make amends even though he won't be around to see the serious consequences.

There are any amount of football pods out there if the adult conversations are too much for you. Thankfully as the person in charge of his own podcast he won't be doing what you think he 'should' do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,426 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

It's not really an adult conversation more hin getting hysterical about things. But as you say he's entitled to do what he wants with his own podcast but I won't be listening to as much of it as before. Will still listen to the odd episode depending on the topic but he's becoming repetitive and frankly boring recently.

I think you have a different definition of hysterical to most people. Long discussions with plenty of room for his guest to speak in between probing questions from Dunphy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,766 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

You have swallowed the far left bible. That much is obvious.

Dunphy should stick to topics he can at least be reasonable about. I don't mind him swaying one way but regarding the political podcasts on the US he seems incapable of having an adult conversation or entertaining the atrocities and lies of the democratic party - i.e the reason Trump was victorious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,522 ✭✭✭Westernview

Another expert saying what Dunphy 'should' do. The previous guy wanted him to concentrate more on football. The thing with podcasts is that he can cover whatever he wants. It's not a public service and you are free to listen or not listen. He obviously has a large following who are interested in the topics he is covering.

I'm guessing you don't listen to him much as he has often criticised Biden and the Democrats over polices and Gaza. In the pod he did with Stanage after the election he called out the Democrats for losing blue collar workers and also said that Harris wasn't a good candidate and was a poor campaigner. He has also been very critical of labour in the UK and in particular Jeremy corbyn so not sure where you are going with left wing bible stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭choosetheend

The man accusing you of swallowing the "far left bible" (for talking about his criticising Trump is okay) is talking about the "atrocities and lies" of the democratic party. When, as you point out, Dunphy has basically being criticising the Democrats non-stop for the last two years for not having a good candidate.

All these Trump supporters are emerging from the woodwork now that he won the election. It's weird that anyone sees that man and wants to support him.

Haven't listened to this in a long time.

I found it got a bit boring with the same guests on a lot of the time, circling over the same taking points.

To be fair to Dunphy though, he wasn't bad. Usually well briefed on the topics.

Don't like how Dunphy fawns over the guests. All praise for Ivan today for joining podcast.

Yates came across pretty poorly IMO what with the swearing and speed talk

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,522 ✭✭✭Westernview

Yeah no need for the swearing. He's a decent analyst and has some interesting insider stories sometimes but a lot of his predictions often don't come through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,041 ✭✭✭Peter Dragon

I don’t listen to it for football as I have no interest but his coverage of the US elections with Stanage was excellent - and not just recently, from however far back Stanage joined (from memory over a year, but I’m open to correction on that). Equally his coverage of Israel has been very good.

As for Yates, he can be boorish and immodest at times and his predictions can be quite hit and miss but I think he was at least being honest in his assessment. I feel that Ivan has morphed into a caricature at this stage. I only listened to that particular episode as my flight was delayed but it killed a half an hour.

Take a drink every time Ivan says "and all that good stuff".

Sounds like the Stand going on indefinite hiatus

    Dear subscribers,

The Stand is taking a break for the foreseeable future. We both have long standing commitments to other projects that we must attend to now. Before we go, we would like to thank all those who have helped The Stand to deliver quality news and current affairs content over the past eight years.

We have had some really outstanding contributors who have guided all of us through a remarkably turbulent period in international affairs: Brexit, Covid, the Wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, and of course the emergence of Donald Trump to form another administration in the United States!  Also the rise of right-wing populism across Europe.

To do what The Stand set out to do we needed the very best contributors that are out there. In this respect we were extremely fortunate. Whether for sport or politics, international and domestic, we endeavored to get the best and mostly did. We’d like to thank all those who contributed across the years.

A huge thanks also to our excellent engineers Dan McAuley and Dek Hynes who have been great professionals and allies throughout lockdown and the recent years. It’s also important for us to acknowledge the talent and professionalism of former engineers Brenden Jenkinson and Ian Maleney. Also Rosie Gogan-Keogh who played an essential part in the start up, and Greg Spring and the Hen’s Teeth design team.

The Stand will remain on the Acast platform. Acast has been a pleasure to partner with on this project and we are indebted to them for this.

It’s been difficult to make the decision to stop now as we’ve hugely enjoyed working together but now is the time.

Finally, a very special thank you to all who have listened to The Stand. Those who have emailed their support or indeed their criticism have made our efforts worthwhile. We are sincerely grateful to every one of our listeners. Thank you most of all.

    Warm regards,

    Eamon Dunphy and Jane Gogan

Very sad to hear this, one of my favourite podcasts, hopefully its not completely the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,522 ✭✭✭Westernview

I'll miss this. Eamon gave topics more room to discuss than many other platforms.

Eamon is probably devoted to completing his book now and maybe sees it as an opportune time to wind down the pod. He may feel he has covered politics and current affairs as much as he can at this stage and facing onto 4 more years of discussions on Trump and the ongoing wars may not interest him.

Sad, but not that surprising. I felt this was coming, especially after winding down the football coverage with John/Liam last year.

Pity as I still enjoy dipping in to it depending on who he has on. Interestingly it says The Stand will remain on the Acast platform so maybe they are thinking of bringing it back but with a new presenter. Will be a much different show though without Eamo. Or maybe they just mean the show archive will remain up.

I'm surprised to hear that - even if I had stopped listening to it regularly a long time ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,542 ✭✭✭JoeA3

I think they just mean the show archive. They've been re-posting previous episodes over Christmas, they may continue to do that occasionally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,019 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

Just went online to read first that Meta has rolled over completely completely in Trumps favor and then that Eamon is winding down The Stand.

Very depressing, on both counts, Meta, for obvious reasons, this because Eamon was there for most of my adult life since I became interested in current affairs.

It feels like Gay Byrne stepping away from his shows, for my generation.

I hope he's still in good health. Grew up watching him too. A true legend

I hope the reason isnt anything financially related. I remember Eamon a number of times being quite critical of the bailout money RTE were receiving & that it wasnt easy being an independent media outlet. Declining revenues could be another reason why he wasnt able to get Brady or Giles on anymore.
