Currently have a Redmi Note 10 Pro and looking to change.

Xiaomi is good value but I'm not mad about the user experience. The Redmi note 12 Pro is very good value for the price though so I'm considering it.

    What are people's opinions?

    Thanks

Get a Poco X6 pro, it will be double the performance of the redmi note 12 pro

It can be a pain when trying to view files back in the File Manage you get lots of ads, additionally lots of reminders to change themes, other than that it's ok.

The Redmi Note 13 Pro was released on Amazon last week, they had it for £300 at launch, it had 256gb storage. One bad thing about the 12 Pro onwards is they have done away with SD card support, probably not a problem for most people but it would encourage me to go with the 256gb model over the 128gb.

I've been using Xiaomi's since 2018. I generally flash mine with the xiaomi.eu ROM and use Nova as my launcher. Current phone is a Poco F5 and honestly? On a bang for buck basis, they're very hard to beat, especially for the mid-range stuff.

I don't mind miui, i have all advertising and tracking switched off and never get advertising in any part of the system.

No issues with hardware and software running smooth. Main concern is the pre installed spyware that you can't uninstall.

Whats the Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus -5g ike?

Have an upgrade due and Im done with the whole flagship thing - paying €1000 plus for the latest when all I really use it for is calls / texts / browsing - I can get this free for €29.00 a month over 24 months phone is "free" - Im paying €20.00 sim only at the minute so in effect Im paying €240 for the phone. My current phone is acting up so need something soon.

I also have unlocked bootloader on my Poco F5 and installed xiaomi.eu ROM. Bloatware is gone and Google dialler back which means I can natively record calls for work without having to rely on hit or miss third party apps. Hyper OS was released in past few weeks (same OS as on X6) but waiting to make the jump to ensure all the niggles have been ironed out.

Can you send a link to how I would do that, not tech savvy, thanks

    It's all on xiaomi.eu website.

The girlfriend got a redmi phone and I set it up for her

I have a google pixel and you appreciate it having its own versions of stuff like gallery files and no secondary ones. Speaking of galley, the Miui one is crap, I only just put pictures on it (as she had them on a sd card) and started on about redundant albums so I said just use google files/photos (fearing start deleting photos etc)

After that stuff like themes/ringtones etc is very gimmicky, it would remind you of Zedge or that sort of app and of course plenty of paid options

Also, the booster/cleaner etc, again very gimmicky and remind you of the old days of battery saving cleaner etc apps from years ago

The UI is nice, well I dumed it down as she is terrible with tech and the control centre would have her rightly confused instead of just here is your notifications

I didn’t want to go into adb removing stuff as its literally brand new and not my phone, if it was my phone I would remove gallery, booster/cleaner etc and would investigate flashing a rom as mentioned (but I would see about bootloader as having it unlocked officially by Huawei caused issues with a phone I got from Vodafone)

Another thing I didn’t like was having a Xiaomi AND google account (I know just can be ignored) could lead to confusion, especially with backups etc

She got the Redmi Note 12 and I didn’t like the sim tray on the bottom as the pin hole is much higher up than other phones (had to use the ejector that came with it not ones I had) then I barely put it in the (im guessing) microphone hole at the other end as thought that was the release hole

Be interesting to see when it goes too android 13

I have the Redmi 11 and my wife the Redmi 12. Have been buying Xiomia back to the Redmi 7.

Can't fault them, great quality and good performance. Battery life is good. Both came with EU Roms which means no bloatware and no advertising. Screens are nice and big and clear. the only thing I don't like is that they locked you out from flashing custom ROM's like Linoage but the MIUI is good enough that it doesn't really matter. MIUI is quite aggressive at switching things off so auto-pairing with my car can be hit and miss.

Used to get them direct from China as they were much cheaper that way - but last time we bought from Browne Thomas for the same price you could get from China.

    Excellent value for money.

    Another issue or quirk

Screenshots put into DCIM folder so Google photos sees it and backs them up

I'm 3+ years still going very strong with my Poco X3 without any issues and I just bought a Poco C65 for a family member and straight out of the box this week Xiaomi appear to have botched a Miui software update that is resulting in bootloops on the new phone and plenty of others reporting the same on reddit

Had a Poco F3 for over 2 years, and am now using a Poco F5.

I've found both to be excellent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,611 ✭✭✭✭banie01

I moved onto hyperOS 1 last month and it is a step up IMO. Better smart home integration in the control centre and I'm finding better battery life too versus last Miui 14.

Can only echo your sentiment, I've had Mi8 then Poco F2 pro and now a Poco F5 all have been excellent and great performers versus their competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,982 ✭✭✭✭GBX

Have had a few Xiaomi phones however my last phone was a Nokia 7 Plus which had a very vaniilla form of Android. Currently have the Poco X5 pro. Find Miui grand. Its not as bad as it used to be in terms of bloatware and the likes. Recently, I've unlocked the bootloader and have a custom ROM on it. I'll likely go back to Xioami.EU rom if the Google pay issue continues. FYI having an unlocked bootloader doesnt play nice with banking apps etc. But with Magisk Modules, there are some workarounds but its getting tighter to get around Googles attempts at being a closed shop.

About month ago I wipped my ximio redmi 10 in vain attempt to gain control of a horrible phone. Failed. Miserable. Did clean install and since I'm plauged with trash (betting and porn) pop ups and Norton adware. Now updating to version 13, know I taking a chance . Any idea how to gain control, format for a Linux OS fresh install

    For thi

Is your phone the Redmi 10, Redmi 10s or Redmi Note 10? If it is the Redmi 10 or 10s variant, these have a Mediatek processor which there are fewer Custom Roms available and probably less maintained now. If it is the Note 10. You might be able to put Xiaomi.eu rom on it or CR Droid. Which do you have?

Im still using the Mi 8 (6 years old) with a custom ROM and Kernal. Just recently upgraded it to Android 14

    Works flawlessly

I'm happy enough with mine, but at the moment no Xiaomi phone supports ESims. That could be a dealbreaker for some.

I've really enjoyed my Mi 11 for the last two and a half years.
Great screen, fine cameras and decent battery life.
I was due an upgrade at Christmas, but really nothing quite there yet could beat it by much.
I found out why they pulled this off the market quickly and all you could get was the 11 lite and other variants.

I got a new AX6 wifi router last week and as coincidentally (as I thought) my wifi stopped working on the phone the next day.
This was after seeing speedtests like never before on the phone.

Turns out there's a bug in the hardware on this series of phones and once the wifi chip switched to 160Mhz bandwidth to make full use of Wifi6 it burned out. permanently. 3 years ago Xiaomi recognised this and I just found a statement from them saying they would replace the motherboard and extend the warranty. Maybe they forgot to tell Vodafone (who I bought the phone from), but they definitely never told me!

No more WiFi, no real resale value and I'm wary of replacing it with another Xiaomi now which is a pity :-(

I have the same phone, i never knew this thanks 👍

Will i hate my phone if I go from iphone to xiaomi or poco? Have been iphone as long as i can remember, but in the end they havent changed in years, and the Samsung flip phone and similar options are wild prices.

Main concern is the operating systems on some of these - I may have tainted experiences after some early android experiences.

    😎

Phones have reached their peak years ago. All improvement now is some more pixels, rounder buttons, ai enabled Blabla. Software is mainly stable, so should not cause concerns. Usability you get in days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,998 ✭✭✭Paulzx

Have a Poco F3 for the last 3 years. Brilliant phone and will be replacing it with whatever Poco F? is out when it dies. You can get the Poco F6 8g Ram 256 storage for between 300 and 350 euro on Amazon at the moment. Much better value than a low end Samsung etc. which will drive you nuts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,862 ✭✭✭poker--addict

ordered a poco f6, lets see if I can be converted from apple - it will come down to how intuitive the operating system/software .

    😎

The important thing to remember is that the launcher can always be changed or customised to give you a preferred layout & interface.

I'm using Xiaomi phones since 2017 and have always used Nova Launcher rather than the miui or now HyperOS launcher.

best android 14 rom or best for my phone in you opinion ? looking for Note 8 Pro thanks

AFAIK Xiaomi ended support for the Note 8 pro with an Android 13 based version of MIUI 14. There may well be modded android 14 based FWs available, XDAforums would be a good place to start looking.

    You have an unlocked bootloader?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,252 ✭✭✭seanin4711

bootloader unlocked- how would i know check?

looks like this was the latest and greatest rom updated

Bootloader status & how to unlock

Be aware with non-official ROMs you will need to keep on top of Magisk, modules, deny list and other tools to keep banking, GPay and other apps requiring security working.

The days of installing a ROM and everything requiring Play integrity & Safety net attestation just working are long gone.

I'm not sure if POCO is a sister brand of Xiaomi, but I've had my POCO X3 for 3 years without any issues until now. The phone has started restarting itself, most of the time shockingly within 10 seconds of using TikTok. That said, I've just purchased the Xiaomi 14 Ultra because I was intrigued by its massive camera. Overall, I'm happy with it for now, but I still use my old phone - even though it gives me a hard time 😂 when watching TikToks (I'm waiting for my Xiaomi phone case to arrive because I tend to destroy phones within a week haha, and that camera, man, it's fecking huge).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,611 ✭✭✭✭banie01

Apart from being a nice to have, do you have any pressing technical need to update to update to Android 14?

Are you using any apps that require Android 14 minimum? Or is there particular android functionality you want to use?

If yes? Then upgrade to a new phone, if no? Then why rush to upgrade?

Using custom ROM requires a fair degree of user input, and isn't a set it and forget kind of deal. The user needs to keep abreast of not just the OS but also any breaking changes that app updates can & do introduce.

    Hi,thanks for the advice!

done a bit of Rom updates to previous phones ,just looking for something more up to date/ fresh than MIUI global 12.5.8.

maybe all i need is nova launcher and a new theme etc

I got Poco f6, operating system seems fine and that was my main concern moving from iPhone

Two things I need to understand to fix though related to phone going to sleep. My car is opened by my phone. Car will not sense me arriving in close proximity until I take phone and start/open screen, seems like Bluetooth sleeps or phone doesn't "hand shake" with car fast enough?

I also have my house gates setup to open when phone location enters my locality, this is also not working or not working fast enough. I have stopped battery saving/ sleep the apps on car and home assistant app

    😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,611 ✭✭✭✭banie01

What location permissions do you have set for the control apps? Always on, or only when using app? That combo of location services and battery permissions has caught me out before.
Have you tried to lock the app so its always running?
Open the app, check its running as you want, then press "overview" button, long press on the app tab, selection of options appear and select "padlock".
See how that goes for you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,862 ✭✭✭poker--addict

Ok will try the lock function, wasn't aware of it

    😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,862 ✭✭✭poker--addict

Lock doesn't seem to have worked. As far as I know I have given full permissions, to the point I'm wondering if I'm spiking battery drain rate with what I have allowed

Hey still unable to identify correct keep Poco settings for Bluetooth and location services.

Home assistant runs by gate automation when I test it and opens my gates. However Poco itself and it's location never seem to trigger it

    😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,611 ✭✭✭✭banie01

I'll take a look through my own HA & Xiaomi settings and see if I have anything different in my settings and let you know.

I don't have any geofence automations set up so I may not be much help to you tho. Also try r/Poco or xiaomi.eu for better/specific help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,862 ✭✭✭poker--addict

Thank you, I am starting to narrow it down to location settings. I have a smart house alarm also, not linked to HA, and it should ask me to arm alarm when I am leaving vicinity of house, but doesn't appear to be doing it
