Also, this isn't going to help me grow back my hair or make me more popular, so Nintendo hates me, but I'll buy it anyway, just to spite them.

Looking for some advice here folks, about gaming generally but with an emphasis on the switch.

Myself and my partner are saving for a mortgage this year which means more nights in, less holidays etc. and she has mentioned getting into gaming could be something to keep us occupied on the weekends/evenings. Her birthday is coming up in two weeks, she has mentioned to be over the past number of weeks that she thinks we should get a Nintendo Switch OLED as it seems the best multiplayer console and obviously has the portable option and also possible to play via the TV.

Firstly, do you think a Switch would be the correct console of choice? Most of my friends who game play the PS5 and I've probably never even heard of someone my age playing the switch (~30), but then again I am not a gamer so not something I'd be talking about really.

Secondly, I see here and online there is a new version of the Switch coming out at some point in 2025. Would it be stupid to invest in one now or could it still be worthwhile with a view of getting us more into gaming in general?

Finally, any tips around getting usage out of it/games to recommend? I just have the fear of spending €400 and it goes unused or gathers dust after the first few weeks. Cheers in advance for any help!

I would most definitely wait until a few days before her birthday no matter what you do. Everyone is expecting official news on Switch 2 this month hopefully including a release date. If that happens you will have a better idea if you want to wait.

Maybe pick up a 2nd hand bog standard Switch and give that a go, a try before you buy type thing. If you're going to be playing multiplayer on telly anyway the need for OLED might be less of a requirement.

Any Switch game you buy would be playable on any new Switch coming out.

Which means the current gen Switch mains charger cable won't be compatible for powering the Switch 2 whilst docked, as it will use a 60w charger.

How much does it cost to do a console announcement?

Maybe Nintendo are trying to save money by not doing an announcement, knowing that the leakers are doing the work for them for free. Or maybe its some kind of marketing ploy.

TBH, I'm only commenting here because of the abundance of leaks before the official announcement. Otherwise I wouldn't be bothered, so it might be working…

The obsession with the console exterior is uninteresting tbh, especially as it seems like a slightly tweaked update of the Switch (as expected). Of course it'll be interesting to see the tweaks that have been made, but it's been clear for a while it's a wholly conservative hardware update. Which is all Nintendo needs to offer tbh.

Nintendo has the info that matters still in the vault: the games. No matter what the device looks like, something like a new full-fat Mario or Mario Kart game would be the real special sauce for the eventual announcement. Nothing else would come close.

Looking back at the leaked Switch 2 case designs in September, I'm guessing that the right Joy-Con has mouse controls too.

We haven't seen the finished right S2 Joy-Con detached though, or not that I'm aware of at least.

Reliable leaker and insider NateTheHate released a new video earlier today. In it, he says that 4 big games will be coming to Switch 2. Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth were all specifically mentioned. Remake will release in 2025 and Rebirth will release in 2026.
That said, those may not be the only ones. When Xbox fan and video game insider Jez Corden was informed by a fan about NateTheHate mentioning Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Microsoft Flight Simulator coming to Switch 2, Corden replied saying that there will be “way more than that”.

I can't really get interested in cross platform titles on Switch 2.

I'm sure the new Nintendo launch games will be amazing. I also hope they provide free upscaling and 30 - 60 FPS on games like BOTW and TOTK. Also, the new pointer controls sound like they have much better screen pointer support a la Wii. I bet we get Super Mario Galaxy 2 now and a load of other Wii games that require precise and fast pointing.

Nintendo is making Switch the platform to play all Nintendo games past, present and future (next 20 years anyway).

And with Xbox and PlayStation games on PC seems like SteamDeck/SteamOS devices will be option 2. Also a load of competition again now in portable GPUs.

It'll be Nintendo (Apple) and SteamOS (Android).

I seem to recall supposed delays for a previous announcement for a Direct or something due to something happening in America similar to the LA fires. So wonder if that could be a factor here.
