    RResults out today

Disappointing result. In the 30s, highest OOM I've had in any TCO competition. My county is slow and quiet for these roles. Was 12 last year and didn't get a contract until July so not expecting to get anything this year. Oh well!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23 Mariahol

I'm through to stage 2 and currently 6 months into a 9 month contract. It says if you have previously completed a TCO contract you may not need to do an interview and to submit an application where they will only look for references. Would my current contract need to have ended already in order to be eligible? Thanks for any advice.

Did you get an OOM? Or just your score? I'm in the same position, with less time left, and I didn't get an OOM, so I'm assuming I count as having completed a contract?

Edit - never mind, I misread it, I did get an OOM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23 Mariahol

Yeah I got an OOM. I emailed asking them just waiting for a reply. Hopefully it counts it would be great not having to sit an interview!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23 Mariahol

Just got this email from Public Jobs

Thank you for your email. This option is only available for candidate who have completed a TCO contract within 3 years of 28th November 2024.

If you have not completed a contact before that date there is no need to fill out this form.

Right, sounds like it won't count for me then either. I've sent the thing back saying I'd completed a contract so I'll just wait and see what happens. I've only got 2 weeks left on mine which seems a shame to not count.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23 Mariahol

Yeah that would be a shame with only 2 weeks left. I presume they wont start calling until after Christmas.

The 2024 panel is closing on Dec 31st, so they're definitely not calling from this new one until sometime in the new year. My office actually appointed some new TCOs to start in January from the old panel, so they definitely won't be calling from the new one straight away.

Came in the middle 30s OOM for Louth, anybody have any idea how long Louth normally takes to get through these?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87 ✭✭jecca1

Does anyone know off hand if the interview for tco25 is competency or capability based. Tco24 was competency and wasn't too bad at all.

    Low 30's for my county.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 206 ✭✭lashofeye

I got 83 OOM for Kildare ! No idea if good or bad, first time applying!

What jobs could you get from this and what would be the starting salary?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,976 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

The job is Temporary Clerical Officer. That's the only job you can get from it. If you mean what department would you be a Temporary Clerical Officer in, it depends on which departments have offices in your county.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,976 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

You could email them and ask what number they got to on the 2024 panel, should give you an idea of where you stand.

The other thing with TCO comps is you get a fair few students applying and they're only available over the summer. Even when you're supposed to specify availability, some will put down any time, just in case. So you could be higher up the list if there's positions available earlier or later in the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 195 ✭✭sue z

Yes I do mean what department. I naturally assume you would be working in the SW office but where else could you be placed? Any idea on salary to start?

    Thanks

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,976 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

Depends on what county you are in, to be honest. Most, if not all counties have DSP offices, but there are other departments around the country too, so you could end up in any of them. Google the Civil Service mobility map and you can see which departments are in your county.

571, before tax, is the starting rate for clerical officer

You are likely to be asked shortly to select what town or towns you would work in. You could be in any Government in those towns. The Tco salary is on the information booklet we all received when the job was advertised. You will be on the first point of the scale unless you have previous clerical officer experience.

I’ve never applied for this before. I got 102 and in Co. Sligo have I any hope of being called for interview. I got sent the location preference email today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 136 ✭✭Pamelabeasley

you have a good chance, there is a big DSP pensions office where they take on a fair few TCOs particularly during the summer. You will probably have a few months wait though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 raymurr6

I must look at my booklet but when do they usually start taking on? Thanks for replying I’m new to this and looking to start a new job and get a foot in the door. I didn’t think I’d have a chance but I’m not like the any of the students I can take it at any stage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 seanbrian93

I came 18th in the OOM for Monaghan and got a message asking for my preferred location. How much of a chance do I have?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,976 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

The location preference goes out to everyone, just so you know. 18th sounds pretty good though. Depends on how many offices there are in Monaghan. Google "civil service" mobility map, and you can click on all the departments in any county and it will show how many COs are currently permanently working in them. General rule is the bigger the office the more chance of positions coming up. You could also try emailing PAS and asking what number they got to off last year's panel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 raymurr6

Can I ask from previous years when do they usually start interviewing for the temporary positions? I can’t imagine I’ll be offered one but just want to see

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,976 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

If they're doing it the new way they'll only interview when there's vacancies. So it'll differ from location to location.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 raymurr6

Thanks I checked the mobility map for Sligo seems to be a large zone but I’m 102 on OOM don’t think I’ll be likely called for interview

Ah thanks, yeah I applied in the summer and came 74th and still got the preference email so I know that doesn't meant much. What is PAS if you don't mind me asking?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,976 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

Public Appointments Service. Basically the people who run the recruitment competitions. There'll be a contact email for any competition you go for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 monaghan2022

I am ahead of you for Monaghan, so I’ll post when I get interview call. If under 20 there’s a good chance as lots won’t accept a temporary job of 8-12 weeks.

Permanent roles rarely come from temporary panels sadly fyi so better using this to improve on scores and practice interviews.

I expect to be called in May as they usually hire mainly for summer shorter working year cover then few maternity leave covers etc which are longer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 raymurr6

How long are the temporary contracts usually for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 tira11opm

It can vary. I've been offered a 6 month contract which got a few extensions and I ended up temping for 11 months in total (I was successful in a separate permanent competition after that). However, I know some people are given an initial 8 week open contract and extensions aren't always guaranteed. You might get 12 weeks and be let go because you were covering someone's absence and they came back to work after 12 weeks. I have never seen anything less than an 8 week contract, so I assume that's the minimum you'd be offered. My advice is keep applying for temporary competitions as well as permanent ones until you are permanent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 raymurr6

Thanks for that! Really appreciate the information. Hopefully the permanent contracts come up again in summer to apply for. I might not even get an interview yet totally jumping the gun even here

Ah thank you! I was also wondering how long the temporary contracts last so thanks for that too!

I'm currently employed in an administration role now. If the temporary clerical officer role is 8-12 weeks, is it worth taking a risk on or staying where I am now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,343 ✭✭✭✭Mrs OBumble

It's almost never worth the risk of leaving a permanent job to take a temporary one.

Especially if the temp contract is measured in weeks, not months or years.

Last year, there was an additional 2024B campaign. Is it likely to be the case again this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,733 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

I wouldn't reccomend leaving a permanent role for a temp role. these roles do not usually become permanent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 seanbrian93

Thanks, I'll just use this as practice for the permanent competitions

I wouldn’t advise it. Use it to improve your scores and interview technique for the next clerical officer campaign.

Check out the legal service they usually run a panel before summer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7 raymurr6

I am in a position where I am in a permanent job but I have to leave and re think my situation due to health and location.

I was going to take a temporary position and apply for permanent position in the civil service well that is in the hope the come up again in the summer, I don’t know will they again this year after last year. I am hoping I’m making the right decision. I am still looking at other jobs too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 tira11opm

Look, anyone applying for competition called Temporary Clerical Officer will know the job is temporary. Everyone has their own reasons for applying, it may suit to be temporary. And to be honest, I found taking a temporary role and gaining experience helped me so much when it came to applying for a permanent position and I interviewed well because of it. I was lucky I didn't have a break in contract but you just always need a plan B if you are applying for temporary roles.
