that’s what I paid in the past for a premium tyre not Kuhmo. I ended up getting Toyo tyres today. Japanese apparently, I had never heard of them. Less than €300 for the pair from the garage up the road. Maybe I’ll regret spending a bit less but will see. Not sure if I’ll notice any deterioration in grip.
I’m getting itchy feet so didn’t want to spend too much although don’t know what I’d change for.

I had Toyos on my Integra Type R. Well known there I the JDM cars in fairness. I’d have them over the Kumho IMO.

I had Toyo tyres on a car before, they are a well known brand and a favorite on Japanese performance cars, probably less well known in this part of the world however. The ones I had were a soft compound though so they wore quickly enough if I remember correctly but I'm sure they make various models of tyres with different attributes. If your going through rears at the rate your saying then spending €300 on a pair of theses to see how they get on is a good move.

Nothing at all wrong with Toyo tyres.

3 sets worn in 40k km is serious. Toyo probably not too long lasting but couldn't be alot worse that what you have had.

I had 40k on my Michelin rears before they needed changing. M50 and I don't take it easy so it's very odd you've burned through 3 sets for the same mileage.

yes I can’t understand it as normally I’m not hard on tyres.

Are you still in an i4?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,031 ✭✭✭stesaurus

Yep, front will need replacing shortly for 1st time but 10k done on new rears and no issues again.

Did you get tracking done at any point? It sounds like something isn't quite right for that kind of wear you're seeing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭carsfan2

    yes

I’ve had the tracking done after every tyre change. If these don’t last I’ll maybe see if there’s something up in the car itself. You all seem to be getting much longer out of tyres.

I was in local BMW dealer today and had an interesting chat with sales manager.
He said there’s virtually no new market for the i4 and i5. Only Ev’s they are selling are those eligible for grant.

People are buying phev at the upper end. Best seller this year is the X5 50e followed by 530e.

330e not selling in any great numbers as when you add a few extras it’s too close in price to the base 530e. He said they have lobbied BMW to bring down the price of i5 but they’re not interested.

They have two 231 i4 m50’s so not interested in my car as a trade in at the moment unless I’m prepared to take bottom money for it.

A bit depressing as an i4 owner but I really wouldn’t go back to a phev or combustion unless a very special car.

I’m thinking though my next car will be a used EV

All makes sense as I’ve been watching the M50’s and waiting. But they have been sitting there for months on end.

Your car is beautiful colour combo. Would fly out of dealer I'd say but they want it all their own way on trade in prices.

It’s not that surprising. Lots of high end BMW sales are leased company cars. These drivers won’t care what petrol costs as they’re not paying for it.

Are you stuck on the premium brands for your next car? I've always had bmw mainly and then my last ice car was an Audi so I was really interested in where thet were going with ev but they're not really offering much above other brands. I liked my etron but i wanted something with more spec, the stuff it was missing is criminal, but I wouldn't blame anyone new for not extensively ticking the options boxes.

I'm happy now with my 2 cupras, to buy now brand new they would be about 90k, 53k for the tavascan and 37k for the born, tavascan is absolute top spec at that price. Another 5k gets you a born vz now. 326bhp for 42k.

And I could do the same with a vw id3 and id4, even an id7, a skoda elroq and enyaq, a kia ev6 and an ev3, 2 cars from other brands too, byd seal and an atto, all for the price of a single i5 or a6 etron etc which probably would still be missing a lot. And chasing bmw and Audi up the years was looking like it was going to be just far too expensive.

What I'm saying is there's still really good cars available outside of where I would have usually shopped. If you'd told me 5 years ago I'd be genuinely interested in a kia or would actually be driving 2 tarted up SEAT cars I'd have laughed at you. But here I am!

Audi A6/S6 e-Tron’s look a very attractive proposition if you can get past the massive price tags. Maybe a more affordable option when these cars are 2-3 years old.

    Bjorn loving the Avant version here;

I think it’s hard to move away from the i4 m50, I’m not seeing much else out there that would tempt me. I was also watching some videos on the S6 etron and if it didn’t cost €130k to spec up it would be a lovely car. But then an M5 touring doesn’t cost much extra. I don’t see myself buying brand new next time anyway, depreciation is a total killer on the brand new cars and I’ll just wait till my PCP is up in two years and pick up the €130k cars someone is buying new today for a lot less.

I put rear tyres on mine recently as one of the rears blew out, I didn’t realise how bad it had worn on the insides, was lucky I was driving in the city when it happened and not on motorway. I put back on the same P Zeros again, ended up at €370/tyre but I had no choice as tyre was totally flat and the sealant kit was losing pressure very quickly so would have had to get it towed if I didn’t change them at the nearest tyre place. Also got her first service after two years old which was about €370 so definitely keeping her another while now 😜

Not stuck on any brand to be honest but have bought a lot of BMW last few cars , before that it was Audi and had a golf GTI back in 2015 in between. I think EV's have taken away some of the USP that premium brands offered in the past.

Also the price rises, and cheapening out of interiors that BMW have done recently has put me off. I’ve been looking at prices of the Q6 etron and a well specced launch car might appeal.

This was where the conversation went in BMW dealer yesterday. There is no comparable car out there that combines the performance, grip, comfort and practicality of the i4 for reasonable money. I always get itchy feet after a couple of years with a car but can't see anything that does much better in the EV world.

The sales manager said they feel values of i4 will not go down much in the next year or two so advised holding on.

The Polestar 2 performance would certainly match the performance of all but the very top models and would be comparatively a lot cheaper than them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭carsfan2

I have driven the polestar 2 performance model and it is not a match for the i4 in any department it opinion.

I think when you buy brand new premium branded cars you need to be committed to keeping them for an extended period of time to allow the early high depreciation plateau somewhat. If you like to chop and change every couple of years then it will be a costly venture unfortunately.

If the main drive to change is the fear of getting hit with a large bill beyond the manufacturer's warranty then consider extending the warranty. The top BMW extended warranty is almost identical to what a BMW dealer will give on a used BMW. Will be a lot cheaper than the cost to change figures to trade up where you will be back in the same place in 2 or 3 years time again.

same here, €370/corner - i got four branded tyres on my sons fiesta a few weeks ago for €375 🙄 (which made me spend an evening looking at ST3 prices and wondering why I don’t have one)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,986 ✭✭✭sk8board

Hard to see i4 prices dropping much. As long as the long term battery health is decent, there will always be a market for them and most have excellent spec’s.

historic sales numbers are low -

    2022: 200

    2023: 550

    2024: 200

And just 37 in Jan 2025, so it’s unlikely to ever return to sales growth. they’ll be rare enough.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,142 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

And the M50 is in even lesser numbers than that.

I haven't seen a LCI on the road yet.

370 a corner? I put 4 oem replacement Bridgestone altenzas on our Etron, 21 inches, for just over 1k incl 4 wheel alignment a few weeks back!

This isn't too surprising to me for two reasons:

    1. For whatever reason, the demand for EVs seems to skew towards SUVs and that puts the BMW iX- range at the top end of the sales scale
    2. Within BMW themselves, the 4 and 5 series are proportionally lower sellers.

They've done a lot with the iX range, but I'm surprised they've take so long with an i1 and a true i3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,531 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The i4 doesn't come with run flats. You can buy 19" Michelin PS5 for under €200 including delivery per tyre online. OP I think has 20" on his M50 and mentioned that he needed one urgently so had to buy what was available local where you will be shafted.

me neither. They are now very bad value when you look at the current price list and they have removed a lot of what was standard kit from them.

With so few i4’s sold after a peak in 2023 I suppose they should retain most of their value going forward.
