I absolutely hate this mentality of oh shur it's lightens the workload for rest of the season.thats bullshit, slot showed like jurgen did an absolute lack of respectively for the cup and what about all those travelling supporters I'm sure they aren't too happy either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 673 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

Not a hope the players will have that mentality.

Nor the vast majority of fans who have actually watched football properly over the years. Long way to go.

    I don’t think this is a controversial opinion…

Joe’s injury record since joining Liverpool in 2015

I cannot remember if some games were played that needed to be rescheduled, but looking at our fixtures last year it was only from the QF of the FA Cup that it clashed with the league. So we had to reschedule our match away to Everton to April just after the QF in the Europa League and we lost that match.

This year it is only the semi-finals of the FA Cup that clashes with possible league fixtures. We are scheduled to play Tottenham that day, 26 April, so may need to reschedule it if they are still involved in the FA Cup.

If the manager was happy to sacrifice the FA Cup well and good but to send a squad like that to an away fixture in the second tier of English football seemed just sloppy to me at least have something on the bench . Get the results now in coming weeks and fair enough all forgotten but today not so much .

Was Gomez injured or sick today? It didn't look like a typical injury

Yeah sure I get his overall injury record is poor my comment was more on the last 2 seasons for him it’s been good.

What do you want us to do? Is the league lost because we lost with our kids and fringe players against Plymouth? Will we benefit by playing fewer matches? I don't know why you are complaining, other than you want some of us to feel worse that we did not win today when we have seen what happens if we play too many matches at the end of the season.

Agree with the first half but not with the bit about Klopp and Slot. Slot needed to think about the five league games in fifteen days coming up. Away games to Everton, Villa and City included.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,912 ✭✭✭Enzokk

We all hate losing and if we lose ourselves from this result on to the end of the season you may have a point. But what squad would you have selected for this match? Remember we played Thursday night against Tottenham, so rest day Friday and travel day either Saturday or this morning, who would you have put in the squad that played on Thursday and that will play on Wednesday again.

Remember the 4-3 loss to Palace ?

    Now THAT was painful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,293 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Exactly we played mid week and playing a vital league game mid week again. If we weren't going to rest players today, then when? To be honest we still had Diaz, Jota, Endo etc that team should be good enough to beat Plymouth. Really don't see this as Slots fault

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,800 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

Only on the semi-final weekend, as part of the deal for no replays the FA and Premier League agreed there would be no Premier League games scheduled for the same time as FA Cup games hence why the 5th round this season is back to a weekend schedule and not mid week like it has been for the past few seasons

Firstly, fair play to Plymouth - were the better side in the day and deserved the win.

Not too disappointed to be out of the cup given the demands on the squad, if the B team could stay in it then good and well, but not worth running the first XI into the ground IMHO.

That said, the performance was poor, very passive and lacking quality. Easy to be hard on the kids in midfield for instance given the lack of control in that area, but the likes of Elliott, Chiesa, Diaz, Kostas were poor, kept giving the ball away and allowed the game to crawl along at a stop/start pace that suited Plymouth. Plymouth didn't do anything really, they just didn't do anything stupid, and Harvey did, and that was the tie right there.

Gomez didn't look right at all, he chased an attacker for a ball over the top in the first few minutes and he looked like an old man. Maybe he was ill or something, but didn't look right from the off.

With over 40 points yet to play for the league is nowhere close to being won

Tottenham have conceded a goal to Aston Villa in the first minute of their tie so I think it'll be safe to assume that our game with them won't be postponed due to the Semi-Final. 😀

3 points on Wednesday night and I'll easily forget about today.

Exactly, I'd take losing today over Wednesday all day

Five league fixtures in the month of February and over the same period Arsenal only have 3 games.

Testing times looking at who we'll face.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,317 ✭✭✭chicorytip

What absolute guff !! What do you define as "too many matches" ? Playing your reserve team in any FA Cup tie is just an insult to paying supporters of the club. It backfired in an embarrassing defeat today and I feel almost a grim type of satisfaction that it did. Disgrace !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 465 ✭✭bdmc16

Hate this mentality that certain fans have the manager are disrespectful in some way trying to protect and rest players . We already lost Gomez and Trent in space of 8 days , let’s get real!

The League is the absolute priority. As nice as that spurs victory was , it’s come at a price that jeopardises our league ambitions without doubt on the flip side. We have to play Everton Villa & City away plus we also have Wolves at home all in 1.5 weeks . Think we could have fielded a full team with 3 games originally planed which themselves is a tough run but with Villa now thrown in away , it does us no favours at all and hope I’m wrong but a real risk of of dropping points or getting injuries as 4 games in 10 days is too much.

Arsenal meanwhile have a long break now and only 2 games against a leaky Leicester team and home to West Ham game they’ll be heavy favs for an easy 6 points. No issue with going out of the cup today or squad picked today if we can pick up 3 points on Wednesday.

Well we played 63 a couple of years ago, didn't win the league or the champions League and the team fell off a cliff the following year, so yeah, happy not to do that again,

You're responding to shamrock55. You are entering a realm where logic does not apply. Don't do it to yourself!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,948 ✭✭✭✭Charlie19

Two of our front three are winners at international level and the other is a Copa America runner up.

You would think that be enough to win against a team at the bottom of the championship.

Throw in the the likes of Elliot Endo Kelleher and Tmiskas and you can see why Slott put out that line up.

It does though show that we're a little light in midfield and let's hope our four regulars can stay fit for the remainder of the season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,602 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Diaz continues to offer nothing. I'd have him gone in the summer if there's a half decent offer.

Endo about the only decent performance today.

Not bothered, league is absolutely everything this season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,604 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

The big plus, if there is one, is not one of them can moan if they're not in the first choice 11 moving forward.

I'm sorry, but that team and squad is one that we just had to send out today. We have 2 many massive games coming up in a short space of time. Yes everyone hates losing, but sometimes sacrifices just have to be made.

6 points ahead with 14 games for to play ,Liverpool have a game in hand but one injury and the pressure is really on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,010 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Definitely the correct team picked. They just didnt play well enough. Not Slot’s fault. I doubt a single Liverpool fan who attended the game was surprised with the line-up.

Gomez confirmed as injured not ill. Hopefully not too bad as it seems he was careful to come off before he did proper damage. But a few weeks out i imagine

Jones also injured according to Slot. He was supposed to be on the bench but wasnt fit enough. Doesnt sound too bad, but presumably a doubt for Everton.

could be 9 Wednesday which is absolutely crucial

The irony that you mention guff in your opening salvo. You think the fans travelling there today thought we were going with our first choice 11? Some quare nonsense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,927 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

The team put out today should still have been good enough to beat a side bottom of the championship. Problem wasn't the young players really. It was that most of the senior players who did play were woeful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,137 ✭✭✭Marty Bird

Jones wasn’t injured he said he felt he wasn’t completely recovered from the training session yesterday. Hopefully positive about Joe he said if he had one more sprint it would go. So not a tear hopefully.

....but why not put out your strongest possible eleven regardless, even if it's not Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. These are super fit players who ought to be more than capable of playing three full games in seven days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,196 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

If Slot had started the main lads today and VVD broke his leg you'd be the first one in here whinging.

The team picked today should have had enough to win. They didn't, they let the manager down.

while understanding the points about team etc now while the timing of fa cup games is nearer to business end of season then league cup why this year did we play a stronger team then usual in that competition that results in more miles in our first team players then maybe needed to be . One thing am not having is a a few first teamers coming off the bunch last 20 mins risks derailing our season if that’s the case they are not going to be strong enough in coming months !! No excuses get that league done now in coming months .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,309 ✭✭✭dogbert27

Maybe Slot took the risk in going out of this competition. While we had a mix of first teamers and kids it was the first time all 11 played as a team so understandable that it is disjointed.

Looking ahead from this exact date, on paper we have only 1 more game to play then our nearest rivals for the league run in depending on how both progress in the CL and that 1 game is a cup final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,602 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Lol the usual mob waiting for a loss and piling in.

We play 5 league games in 15 days, we have a league title on the line, that is the priority. Slot sent the right team out there today but they still should of had enough to get it done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,315 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

It's only the start of Feb, loads of time ahead to rest players, would rather have gone strong today, and won it in first half, and then rest players.

To have won the FA Cup 8 times in our entire history is sad. Do we really want City Chelsea and Newcastle to be seen as more successful in this comp

That side today was wishful , but it was based on how we've always come through this season, Slot got blinded by our own success and pushed it too far, it was a lot to ask for that side to have any rhythm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 160 ✭✭Rain from the West

I'm listening to the 606 phone-in on BBC R5 at the minute. A Plymouth fan was asked whether he would like to win the FA Cup or avoid relegation. Without hesitation he chose the latter. A good example of supporters prioritising league form over progress in a cup competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,604 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

The game ended with Chiesa, Jota, Nunez, Diaz and Elliott on the pitch.

That should've been more than enough, and absolutely the right course of action with the games ahead. Nobody will remember this if the league gets won. Hell, it'll probably be forgotten if we beat Everton on Wednesday.
