Anyone know the situation in the Clare game in regards to the conditions.

Are Wexford ahead because they are better or was there a huge wind assist and Clare should boss the second half ?

Wind is strong in Limerick so I am worried for Wexford it might be the latter.

Ya I was a bit behind I realised later. A very big win and one that wasn't expected.

Clare coming to Limerick next and really needing points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,134 ✭✭✭giveitholly

With only 2 games left it's hard to see Clare avoid relegation

EDIT: Clare have 3 games left

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,087 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Limerick and Tipp away and Cork at home. Will need 4 if everything goes their way but probably need 5/6.

Even if they do manage it having to go all in is terrible preparation for the championship.

Hard to say half mast when you had 12 players on the field yesterday who started the AI final.

Clare as well today had a strong team out and were very poor by all accounts. Interesting weekend of results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,683 ✭✭✭The White Feather

Shock of the weekend must surely be Donegal beating Kerry in hurling league Div 2

    Kerry 3-16 Donegal:5-14

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 590 ✭✭✭C4000

I saw Kerry play Kildare a couple of weeks back and they looked completely out of their depth. Kildare way better conditioned and streets ahead in terms of attacking play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,252 ✭✭✭awaywithyou

Donegal were 15-1 I think... wonder did some of the kerry lads have a flutter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,087 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Looks like the momentum is gone from Kerry. Seems to happen to the almost Liam McCarthy teams a lot where the bubble really bursts when they don't make that final breakthrough to the top flight. They seemed very close only a few years ago.

wexford much the better side , much hungrier and sharper ,clare down loads but even the key players on the panel that played were way below par , lee chinn and conor herne were excellent for wexford

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭funkey_monkey

Poor showing from Antrim. Wonder what is happening there - usually more competitive at home. Reports are a lot of basic mistakes being made. Regressed from Gleeson's reign.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 700 ✭✭✭supernova5

they weren't down loads at all, only Duggan, SOD, Ryan, Cleary, absolutely dire performance, hard to know what's going on with this team now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,380 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

david mcinerney , conor leen (5 minutes at the end) , first game of the year for rodgers , david fitz, john conlon, and first start for kelly , i wouldn't panic it looks like we are doing the heavy training now , players were stuck to the ground after half time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,087 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

You might not panic in terms of preparation for the season ahead but there will definitely be panic when the start of next season is spent playing games against JoeMcD teams and being separated from the rest of Munster for the league.

It won't do the preparation or the county board finances any good next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,380 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

that is the worry in fairness , the only thing though i would say is not playing the league has worked for shane o donnell so whatever preparations he has done the last few years before championship should be used as a bench mark for the rest of the panel come next years championship

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,236 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Wexford were down 4-5 starters too Liam Ryan, Conor Mc, Rory O'Connor, Shane Reck. Wouldn't be panicking from a Clare point of view, they've too much credit in the bank to do so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,649 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

Lifeline for Wexford, hard to see Clare avoid relegation now.

Looks like they're trying to time their run. They should still sail through Munster but it's a risky strategy.

Was it that awful Jerome Quinn that does higher education games? He talks about anything bar what's happening on the pitch and doesn't know the players at all.

in the 5 seasons that it has existed what team has "sailed through" the Munster round robin series?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 590 ✭✭✭C4000

Was a fella called Mark, think he is a BBC NI commentator......Jamsie O Connor was trying his best on co comms but to no avail. Your man was literally ignoring scores going over and just rambling on like he was talking to someone in a pub.....

Tipp have a tough start and Waterford haven't looked great so they probably still will be ok but I don't buy the Joe Canning line that Lohan will be happy giving minutes to players. They aren't exactly playing half a team either and Tipp and KK couldn't get out of second gear against Wexford and still won easily.

Clare played like they only needed to show up today which isn't a great sign. The heavy training is always a poor excuse from fans. Kirszenstein is no fool and is known well for managing injury risk and won't implement heavy loads on players who are playing at the weekend. Obviously there is an element of additional training that you won't see in the match week come championship but it's hardly an excuse.

Huge result for wexford. Their newer players are getting great experience and should benefit them down the line. Likes of Richie Lawlor, conor foley and cian Byrne are all stepping up as leaders. Still a very small team though but a boost to morale even though it looks like themselves and clare will go down.

Definitely wouldn't back them to 'sail' through Munster. They were further off Limerick last season than previously, and play them away this year. Tipp' appear to be resurgent and if Clare lose their opener at home to Cork, typically a close match, then they could have it all to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52 ✭✭challengerbell

    1B really interesting now.

Dublin v Waterford, assuming Offaly do the business against Westmeath is basically loser doesnt gets promoted. Carlow even not out of the picture and a loss to Dublin in a few weeks may not even be terminal to their promotion attempt if they win the games theyre expected to.

What this does mean is that there will be 3 Liam McCarthy level teams in 1B next year, and only 2 go up. It will probably be Clare, Wexford and Dublin/Waterford.

Also the Dublin/Waterford game is not being televised, but available on the TG4 app apparently. Most important hurling of next weekend by far so at least its available somewhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 297 ✭✭Krazy gang

Offaly really building momentum. Leinster could be interesting this year, the 3rd place position especially.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 297 ✭✭Krazy gang

On another note does anyone know how many goals jake morris has scored in league and championship? He has some record

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 590 ✭✭✭C4000

I'll predict Waterford to finish top with 10 points, Offaly and Carlow to be tied on 9 points, with Offaly edging 2nd on scoring difference. Dublin back in 4th on 8 points.

Wouldn’t it be some shock if the 1B final is Offaly vs Carlow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 647 ✭✭✭Treble double

A proper leauge format in hurling is great to see, two up, two down like the football. I can't understand why the don't just call them Division 1, 2, 3 etc. It would be cleaner than 1A and 1B. Having a proper leauge with a chance for teams to climb the divisions will do more to promote hurling in weaker counties than any mad cap ideas by Liam Griffin. In Football the likes of Derry became All Ireland contenders after building up from Division 4 over a number of years. I know the gaps in standard in hurling are much wider, but when teams have an opportunity to climb the divisions it's amazing what can happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,087 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

A & B only makes sense if there was a different relegation rule for A/B compared to D2 but there isn't.

It seems to just be the usual participation medal bull the GAA love. Let teams go around pretending they are division 1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭Brian017

Calling it 1B makes no sense as it is essentially Division 2 in all but name. Unlike previous incarnations of 1B it has no affect or ties to 1A. You can’t win Division 1 from it so why call it that?

Its the same as having a Senior B championship in a county now when it really is an intermediate championship. Everyone knows its division 2.

The set up before this year was crazy. It was designed purely yo suit the big guns. Funnily enough, it would probably eork in Football though as there is less of a gulf betwen teams ranked 1-12.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 647 ✭✭✭Treble double

The Football leauge is almost perfect, best competition in the Gaa played at the wrong time of the year. In the lower divisions everyone is striving for promotion. In Division 1 no one wants to be relegated. Almost every game has something riding on it. The almost perfect refers to Division 1, the leauge final has to be scrapped, team at the end with most points are Leauge Champions. Donegal have got the magical 6 points from their first 3 games which means safety but don't want to play a Leauge final because it is on the week before they are out in the Championship, so they are only going through the motions in their last four games. If there was no final they would be driving on to top the table.

Shane O'Donnell out for the rest of the year. Pity as I always like watching him play, hopefully we see him back next season.

    Big blow to Clare.

    Huge loss

Could easily see Clare have a short year but league form good or bad goes out the window come championship

Good game of hurling, Cork pulled away a bit in the last 10 for an important win.

Early days but Diarmuid Healy with 1-5 from play really putting his hand up for a championship start. Exactly what Cork need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,683 ✭✭✭The White Feather

I thought it was very nice for Derek Lyng to pay tribute to Ray Ryan on TG4s coverage before the game. Important to remember that we are all in the GAA family and some things can be more important. Great to see all in the GAA give support

It's great to see decency, humanity in the world. If behaviour like we witnessed yesterday became an example, and the norm we'd be in serious trouble.

Enjoyable game. Kilkenny hit some bad wides and some poor distribution from Eoin Murphy. Cork pacy, as usual, and looked good. Will either team end their All Ireland drought.. That's the big question.

Not as convinced by cork as some here. 3 of their forwards failed to score from play, kilkenny backs were comfortable for the most part. Jack o connor made a good impact as did Tommy o connell. Jack is not good enough to start imo but is an excellent impact sub. Cork backs have improved a lot. Rob downey is turning into a colossus of a centre back although cian Kenny was influential too. Niall o Leary one of the best corner backs in the game.

Jordan Molloy, huw Lalor and cian Kenny were best for the cats. Up front is a problem. Not enough points. Eoin is not firing at all as of yet. Stephen Donnelly did well but had to go off. Harry shine - not enough pace or presence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 JoyceDavenport

Div 1A is about blooding young players and not getting relegated. Wexford are gone and if Clare lose today I think they're gone as well.

Limerick are the team to beat right now and will be again in championship. Nice blend of youth and experience and massive physical presence around the middle.

Cork have pace and are adding to their panel nicely but still concede too many soft goals. Keeper not good enough imo. Getting better at the physical side of things but need a bit more.

Tipp and Galway have added to their panels too so should be improved.

Hard to know with Clare. New guys haven't really performed and a lot of players wrong side of 30. SOD a massive loss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,793 ✭✭✭YabaDabaDooley

A second narrow loss for Dublin hurlers with another late red card not helping matters. Discipline costing them. Needs to be sorted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 281 ✭✭Montys return

I've been hearing how great the SOD is in the Gaelic Grounds for the last few years now. Clearly, they wasted all those millions they spent on it.

    In dreadful condition today.

Tony Kelly lucky to be on the pitch!

must be a long time since Limerick were held to just 16 points after 50 min

Doesn't look to me that Limerick are anywhere near their best. Compared to the speed and intensity of their play v Tipp it looks miles off. You could say Clare haven't allowed them to play but its pretty pedestrian from the home team not like them at all.
