Fitted clubs

Just wondering how many on here play with fitted clubs or have some clubs which are fitted?

The last fitting I did was back around 2014 with Foregolf for woods and irons. I wasn't fitted for my wedges and putter. Still hit my clubs well, have gone from 12 to 4 in handicap in that time. But am thinking about changing for end of year or next year. Think I'd probably gain a bit from more recent irons and driver. A little distance boost would be welcome.

So the question is to get fitted or not. I know with irons once I have a stiff shaft around the 105 gram mark and I get the lie angle bent flat I'm close to what I need.

Interested to see what others opinions have been and what success or lack of you've had with custom fit clubs.

IMO it's a total waste of money to buy new clubs and not get fitted for them in most cases.

Depending on where you go most places will just take the price of the fitting off the cost of the clubs if you buy them with them anyway. To me it makes sense, try them before you buy them and most likely for free if you do it right.

I used to think it was all about the shaft, but it's astonishing how much difference the head of both irons and woods can make.

At my last fitting, I had a couple of irons in mind. Hit them fine, but then several others I hadn't considered were way better.

My driver I wouldn't even have looked at in the shop (because there were far nicer looking ones), but it was the best one in the fitting and one of the best changes I ever made.

I would definitely recommend getting fitted, if even just to be able to compare what you're buying side by side with your existing clubs. If you hit any of your existing clubs just as well, then the fitting fee was even better value and saved you a lot of money.

(I'm similar to your golf in that I'm off 4 and use a 105 stiff shaft too)

    Be interested in driver

Did the fitter recommend the one you ended up with based on what he was seeing and difference was what - launch, spin mainly ? tks

What we both saw really. I had used Titleist for years. The Ping G410 was the only of all I tried that I hit further, mainly because I spun it a bit less.

I use Shotscope and after changing, my good drives were only about 5-8 yards longer from what I remember. But my average drive was something like 10-15 yards longer, because the Ping was more forgiving, hence my mishits were better.

I cracked the face of it last year after 4 years use and Ping replaced it with whatever of the latest models I wanted for free (even though it was well out of warranty). But while I was waiting for it, I got a loan of a g410 LST. I hit it fine, but at half my normal trajectory. I couldn't for the life of me hit it high when I wanted. Same shaft, different head with same loft.

Ya, I think fitting is definitely worth something, even if its just to feel reassured that what you have is "right" for you. I did a full iron fitting a couple of years ago and made sure the 6/7 heads I hit were blind to me and I didn't know what I was hitting. The only obvious one was a Ping (lets be honest, you can't hide a Ping head !), the rest, I had no idea. Eventually settled on one and was amazed at how the Modus 120 shaft made me perform so much better than the Modus 105, would never have guessed it. I was around 4/5 h/c at the time and I'm certainly not a big powerful hitter, but the 120 was so much more consistent, for me. So, for that reason alone, I'd say to anyone who can, get some sort of fitting before dropping a wad of cash on clubs.

    No clubs fitted

I picked no clubs fitted. But I did hit a few balls with fairways woods at the baldonnel golf show a few years back!

Except for my wedges, I usually buy my clubs second-hand. I buy new but older model wedges, no 200 per wedge for me. I've used the same driver shaft for 9-10 years, replacing the head with a new model once about 4-5 years ago. So despite the higher costs of drivers they last way longer in by bag than my 58 wedge which wears over time. For my irons, I fitted used x100 shafts into old callaway forged heads myself. I don't need the latest and greatest but I don't like having clubs with mismatched specs and try keep shaft weight and flex consistent across my clubs. Despite not being officially fit, my gear suits me well. I know roughly what I need. I used to lose distance with previous drivers where the ball flight was ballooning, but I sorted this by merging shaft with a lower spin head myself.

It would be cool to try a fitting for whole bag top to bottom compared to what I already have, but I wouldn't expect this to help my game much. In more recent times it's become more important for me to just try to play more rather than worry about the clubs I used to I hit the balls with 😁

I don't see the point in getting fitted unless you are physically exceptional - e.g. very tall.

Is it not better to correct your swing to suit standard clubs rather than get clubs to suit your non-standard swing?

  • Administrators Posts: 54,835 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

    Some clubs fitted

No because it's not about fixing a swing. Fitted clubs won't make a quirky swing perform any better, they aren't magic. All they'll do is give you more consistent strikes and distance. Having the correct shaft for your swing speed for example will make a big difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 719 ✭✭✭Infoseeker1975

For me they make a big difference; allows you to get the right shaft for your swing speed rather than adjusting your swing to the shaft you have, weight of shaft is another important aspect for me especially with wedges - this part is where you will get your handicap or that daft index thing down

I put it to you this way. I went to a Pro last time I was fitted he give me a PW and for the life of me and loads of swings I couldn't hit it! like I was slicing it so back it was mad! Then he PW that was more suited and I couldnt believe the difference as it was just PW's and he said thats the difference a fitting makes!

I personally love the experience of a fitting I would spent all day doing it and never get bored!

This is completely incorrect. There is such variance in clubs between different heads and shafts that the chances of you picking something which remotely suits you is almost zero

There's load of factors that can change what clubs you should use. Fitting is a must once you start getting invested in the game. Don't need to do it right when you're taking up the game, but if you're going to buy clubs, there's absolutely no reason not to get the fitting done.

I really enjoyed my fitting last year, and it taught me quite a bit about the mechanics of my swing.

I had a fitting for a new set of Irons in McGuirks a month ago and walked out with the exact clubs that I wanted to buy before I went in. I felt it was a bit of a waste of time in some ways as I am not in my prime and very limited in terms of swing speed. I knew exactly what I wanted and the fitter agreed. It was a free test of the clubs as the cost of the fitting came off the price and everyone was happy. A month later and the new clubs bounce has worked as I have been in the winners circle on two occasions.

What I would say is that fitting is most beneficial for young fit players, many seniors like me are just changing their clubs to boost our ego and keep us motivated… new clubs give us new hope.

I got fitted for my irons 4-PW coming up on 2 years ago. A gift for a significant birthday. Fitting cost of 50 euro was reduced off total price. They're a bit meatier than what I would have chosen by myself. I got a couple of lessons to improve my striking also.

I think on their own they won't transform your game. What I get most from mine is a bit of forgiveness. Off hits aren't punished as much. Also, a bit of confidence knowing that they are fitted for me, so no more blaming the clubs. Overall, a lot more consistency in my game. I'm a 12-13 HI and my average has dropped from low 90s on a par 73 course to around 88. Good for my mental health too as I am not walking off the course in a dander after a terrible round any more.

I've been lucky enough to find an old Ping driver which keeps it straight for me, so haven't needed to get that fitted. I'm more focused on consistency and distance control with wedges for now.

So, I would say anyone should invest in a fitting. Irons will last you for 5-10 years and the investment in fitting is a fraction of what you'll spend overall on golf in that time .

The biggest advantage I find in getting fitted, particularly with my irons and hybrids, is I have genuine confidence in my gapping. I used to buy off the shelf like most, and I would always have issues starting from 7 iron back to 5. I'd have nice 10 yard gaps from wedge back to 7, but after that, there would be days where there could only be 7 or 8 yards difference between my 7 iron back to 5, I'd have to really flush my 5 iron to get the max out of it. I'd then have big gaps back to my 4 hybrid. I tried to introduce a 5 hybrid but that was really inconsistent as it could get quite lofted on a good strike, so my game from 160 yards to 200 was all over the shop.

After years of trial and error on different hybrids, 4 irons, there was a 7 wood thrown in there too at one stage, I decided about 5 years ago to get fitted for a set. I now have a blended set of Ping irons from wedge back to 4 iron, and I have the same Callaway 4 hybrid, they just fitted me into a different shaft. Best decision I ever made for my game, the only issue I had at the time, was I got fitted about month before that thing called Covid! So I'd about a 6 month wait time for the irons and another 6 months before I could hit them!

    Anyone been to Foregolf recently?

Thinking of booking in for sometime in next couple of months. I think Derek is doing all the fittings himself now. Just wondering how anyone has found it, I presume prices are gone high for anything new at this stage

I was in Foregolf in October. I got fitted for driver, woods and irons. I am very happy with the results.

I took up golf in 2019, joining a club and beginning to play weekly. I had a set of clubs from 1997, Mizuno MX100s, bought cheap from a big sports shop in a closing down sale. I was enjoying the game, meeting new people, but very unsure everytime I stood up to a ball. Where was it going to go?

So, in the October of 2019, I started to look at changing clubs, surely technology had moved on? I visited my local McGuirks and tried out many different makes and plumped for the Taylormade M6s. Decision was made in part cause I could hit them, but also because they were heavily discounted for Black Friday and the Sim ha just been announced.

I had driver, 3 & 5 woods, 4 hybred, 5-Sw in the bag, Covid interrupted things. But I was playing a lot. I got a few lessons. My club given handicap of 28 went out to 35. I could hit the ball well from time to time. I got a Shotscope. Most used clubs in the bag were the 4 hybrid and the 5 & 6. Putting was ok, 75% of the time I 1 or 2 putted. Handicap stayed stubbornly high. An annual goal of get to 25 came and went in 2022, 2023. In 2024, I finished top in the over 20 handicap class in the golfer of the year comp (based on the 7 strokes comps during the year). In September 2024, handicap was still 30ish, I decided I was going to get new clubs, I decided on Derrick in Foregolf. I went for a fitting in October. I told Derrick I didn't want to know what he was giving me to hit. We went through the driver, woods and irons. I was very engaged by the process. Derrick gave full detail on why he was giving me a particular club, just not what the make was. Some I hit well, others not so. Too low, too dispersed, left, right. Eventually he presented me with a choice of 2 drivers. I chose. He showed me on the screen what I'd done with each. Selection made, he turned to irons. Same, which option did I prefer, I selected, and again he showed on the monitor what I'd done with that.

I went away having learned a lot about my game. Why I was so inconsistent. I phoned him back that afternoon and ordered the full set as he'd recommended.

As the 2024 season closed out, I hit a purple patch with the M6s. 6 of my counting 8 rounds were in October, I dropped from 29.8 to 27.3. My friends were asking was I sure I needed new clubs. The TaylorMade's were fighting hard.

I took delivery of my new clubs in early November. We're in winter golf now. But out on the course I can see a big difference. I am getting drives away now, and more often than not they are on the fairway. I am parring holes now. The ball is going where I want it to. I am still learning my distances with them. But, overall I am very happy.

My bag is now driver, 5 hybrid, 7 wood, 5-P irons, all fitted from Foregolf. I had 52 and 58 Callaway Jaws that Derrick regripped to match specs on my new clubs (girthier) and no change to my Spider putter. 11 clubs in the bag now, rather than 14, as before.

I ended up with Callaway Smoke AI woods and irons.

I'm likely going to be looking for a new set of irons soon and I'm tempted to go to foregolf but it seems like it's a 30 minute fitting which I just don't feel like is long enough to really go through the various options, between club head, shaft, lie angle, lofts etc.

I've heard great things about ROC golf up the north and they give 1hr30 for the fitting but it's a good distance to travel. Might be worth of though as a once off. I'd be interested to know if anyone has ever been to them?

I'm a bit the same with travel, it's a 3 hour trip one way for me to Foregolf from Cork. But could be worth it just to know I've got a set very correct for myself. Obviously it would be a good chunk of cash but my last fitted clubs are 11 years old this year, so it's not a bad investment if kept long term.

One big advantage I've found with fitting is it takes doubt out of your head. If you hit a poor shot you know it's you not the club. Before being fitted id always be tinkering and trying out clubs, probably end up spending as much and working off guesswork really.

I could always try somewhere Munster based which would be easier for me but not sure really.

I played a round with what I think was the sons owner (ROC) so looked them up after, they seem to cater to very high end gear. He was playing custom Miuras,Miura bag, Honma woods etc. I'm sure they do that standard stuff as well

Carton House do fittings as well and offer longer fitting sessions, same with Concept Golf in Dublin

I did foregolf, stackstown and multiple mc guirks/ ping days and being left handed found it’s very tricky to get all the brands to try. Mostly it’s Taylormade and callaway. Through trial and error buying over the years I’m finding it’s up to me to figure out. There’s a seller on DoneDeal I follow who likes similar gear and a left handed gang in the club.

For example I upgraded my driver from g425 to g430 after trip to foregolf showed others didn’t suit me and then did same with 3w only to find I couldn’t hit that, went back to 410 lst. Trying 3 different wedges at the mo and going to spend less time on clubs this year and just play!

You can book 1 hour, or half hour slots. I did the 1 hour fitting, but you would be surprised at how much ground can be covered quite quickly once you're warmed up and ready to go.

I've no connection to them, but a big shout out to Concept Golf - I've found them excellent. Got fitted for a set of Srixon irons in 2022 and a driver at the end of last year with them. Really happy with both. Although there has been so little golf played this winter with the weather, the driver is still "new" to me !!

Probably hard to accurately judge but how many shots do people think fitted clubs are worth? If playing well could most of us score well regardless of what clubs we are using, is the benefit of fitting really seen on the days when it's a struggle?

Really interesting question. I reckon almost impossible to say without some sort of shot tracking. You'd have to maybe figure it over a season, assuming no swing changes etc, and see if there was a difference in driving, irons, chipping etc. There'd be no way of knowing when a bad shot might have happened and a well fit club possibly prevented it or lessened it, or how much the confidence gained from knowing the clubs are correct, actually impacted a given shot/round. Strokes gained over a season in each category would probably be closest I reckon. I suppose when a bad shot actually happens and you know from past experience the result would have been far worse with the old club would give some idea, but very difficult to quantify I think.

I have only my driver somewhat recently fitted. Makes quite the difference. Bought it just after covid and 4 years on every other driver I try off my buddies I still cant hit it as well and as far as my fitted one. If I'm in trouble off the tee which is very rare it's because of me not becasue of the club.

Got a couple of hybrids but not fitted. They are my 170m and 185m clubs and they are so reliable I wouldnt dream about changing them.

Irons are not standard but not fitted as such. I had some iron shaft fitting over 10 years ago and I know I go best with a lighter and probably more towards regular shaft, I'm in my 50s now. Did a little bit of experimenting over the years with that type of shaft and I'm having a 95 stiff shaft in my current irons and they're beautiful.

Wedges I dont know I have a couple of ancient mp 'raw' series and I'm so used to them by now I couldnt see anything being better for pitching and chipping. I rarely do full swings with anything higher than my GW anyway which is part of my iron set.

Putter. Over on reddit it's all the rage now but IMO its malarky.

I’m fitted for some clubs but not others. I know which shafts work for me these days so I’d be ok to buy one I like the look off if it has the shaft I like in it.

Im not fully sold on the fitting process, some fitters are better than others imo. And I’m a little suspicious at times, are they setting all clubs up with the same Trackman specs.

I bit the bullet and went to mcguirks couple of weeks ago.

Had bought a set of second hand irons five years ago and down to single figures so was looking for the next bit of help to get lower.

First shot he told me shaft was wrong i swing slow so only need regular and my clubs were stiff.

Only played few times with them but definite difference in them. Waiting for a shot scope so i can track the distance etc but ball flight is much better and goes further club v club.

Something else I would be quite interested in experimenting with is grip size. I do think this is something that could have a big impact on peoples performance and also risk of injury but I've yet to come across anywhere that really does this. Is anyone aware of anywhere you get your grip size fitted/tested?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 135 ✭✭zocklie

Not sure where you would get it tested, but I got the mcc +4 grips on my irons when I bought them, and noticed a good difference in terms of not being able to turn the clubface over too much (so was hitting straighter shots)

I have normal grips on a few clubs (wedge & hybrid) and feel like its too easy to roll the face unintentionally with those clubs.

I ended up getting a thicker grip on my driver now aswell and its much more consistent.

Yeah, thicker grips make your hands slower in the transition and hence, less likely to "flip" over and hook the ball.

    No clubs fitted

I'm in my mid 5Os, I've being playing golf regularly as a club member for 25 years and have never had a club fitting.

I haven't played off more than 12 since 2014 and was as low as 7 two years ago. I currently play off 10.

My driver is a newish Cobra regular shaft with the loft cranked up to 12 degrees. I normally hit this dead straight but not long (220yds approx) and sacrifice distance for accuracy.

I got rid of my 3-6 irons a few years ago and replaced them with cobra hybrids. (3 19 degree loft to 7 with 31 degree loft). I used these for carry distances of 140-180 yards. Great for long par threes and any time I'm in the rough. I also carry a 15 degree Adams 3 wood for 180 to 200 shots but tbh I use it mainly in the winter.

My scoring irons 7-PW are old Mizunos that I use from 100-140 degrees. The PW has 46 degrees loft and I chip with this around the green.

I also carry 52 and 56 degree wedges which I bought off the shelf in Sports Direct for about 40 euros each. I only use the 56 in bunkers and it gets me out and back in play.

My putter is a relatively new Odyssey 2 ball with 33 in shaft as I'm not tall.

I've thought about going for a fitting but my game is based around short accurate hitting with a tidy short game. I'm not sure that I'd benefit much than if I was younger and longer hitter.

That could be me only I'm maybe a tad longer and my hybrids are 3 & 4 only. For our 6500 yard courses that's all you need. I have to say though that after I had a driver fitting I am now convinced this can be very beneficial.

Morning, I'm a new ish player (started about 12 months ago) when I was starting out I bought a set of old irons, Mizuno ones from the 90's. Wondering if it's worth going to get some fitting advice or just a shop to get a big of an upgrade? or is a fitting for someone with more experience

Club fitting isn't for "good" players only, its to make the game easier for you. You would need a baseline of good mechanics before getting fitted though, as one or 2 lessons could undo what you were fit for. If you feel you have good fundamentals, then absolutely get fitted.

nno matter how good or bad you may be. it is worth getting a fitting.

If only to get the right shaft flex, length and type of club head.

doesn't mean you would have to buy the latest expensive models
