In Blue Prince, you embark on a genre-defying experience, filled with a unique mix of mystery, strategy, and puzzles that weave together to create an unpredictable journey. Will your explorative steps lead you to the rumored Room 46?

Today is launch day for the universally lauded GOTY contender (titles such as The Outer Wilds and Return of the Obra Dinn have been namechecked in reviews). Anyone else diving straight in?

I don't know what's going on 😂 what do people think of sharing pics of their first day? I don't think it's a spoiler? Very interested to see how other people got on. I had a load of steps left but had to call it a day, ran out of options. Had 2 safes but couldn't find the codes and was in a bit of a rush. Chuffed with myself for completing the dartboard puzzle bit it was handy enough.

Definitely jumping in - hoping to give it a whirl tonight but definitely tomorrow.

The hype for it is something fierce though, even repeated assurances that it is ‘that good’ 😂

I've seen it mentioned a few times from reviewers and found a note in game that said the same thing "grab a pen and paper, take notes". Have a new notepad started on my phone just for the game now as looking back on day 1, i came across some random info that i will never remember.

Listened to the first ten mins of Triple Click about it and they’re saying they’ve put dozens of hours into it - 160+ hours in Jason’s case. Genuinely did not expect that kind of hour count 😅

Just did my first 3 days. Day 1 went fine, 25 rooms, filled up most of the lower space. Ran out of keys and gems to get any further though. Day 2 was only about 10 rooms; completely blocked myself off due to RNG. Day 3 about 26 rooms too but got up to the north of the house. Ran out of keys and then accidentally hit the gym and lost a bunch of steps. Ended up blocking myself off again though anyway.

Feels fantastic so far though. Pretty complex and layered. As for the suggestion of keeping a notepad beside you, I've already filled 3 A4 pages with notes that make me seem absolutely insane :D

    Edit: My Day 1 layout

I really want to try this game but, to what has been mentioned, people with 160 hour counts already... I just don't have that kind of time and it's putting me off somewhat... 😕

It sounds like from 1 review that after you find the secret room, the is 100+ hours after that so you could try it and use if you can get the main goal anyway but no idea how long that thanks itself.

Just finished day 2, found a bunch of more stuff but ran out of steps which was very different to day 1. Very very clever game but still no idea of what's going on, intrigued though.

Yeah I can't imagine 160+ hours is how long the game actually takes to complete, it's likely more that there are also a lot of ways to complete it, more secrets to find and that you can keep doing it after completing it.

Did about 8 days so far. Some of them quite short, but still learning and unlocking a few new rooms here and there. I thought running out of steps would be the main obstacle in the game, but more often than not I just end up blocking myself in, whether by not having good RNG or gems to build rooms with more doors. Still though, have learned how to complete a few more of the puzzles, though we'll have to see if they change the next time I'm in the room.

I like the presentation. I like the idea. I'm intrigued to find out more. But man, I hate progress blocking rng... its putting me right off. That and having to take physical notes... gimme a journal ffs!

Can't see how someone could put 160 hours into this. Obviously something big happens when you reach the room, but I doubt I'll ever find out because rng. Shame. This is why I don't play most card based type games, rng luck sucks. I can accept I've a lack of skill/patience in gaming, but progress blocking rng annoys me enough to stop. Might come back to it in the future. Maybe.

Yeah just to be clear apparently 'rolling credits' is much, much shorter than 160 hours, but genuinely surprised there's that much in the game given its nature.

Gave it a quick go last night and ended up doing 10-11 days worth of runs! Really like it so far - quite an ingenious concept, and really comes into its own when you find the 'special' rooms that link up with other parts of the house in interesting ways.

Pump room has been one of the most intriguing in that sense, though only had the aquarium and pool to play around with.

Magnifying glass and upgrade discs seem pretty invaluable items.

Like @Penn almost all my runs have ended with being boxed in rather than running out of steps, though a few have been desperate searches for keys that have ultimately done me in.

Found the first 'permanent' blueprint upgrade before finishing last night - the westward path that has a nice little bonus room you can seemingly access at the start of every run.

Need a bit - who am I kidding? a lot more time with it, but fiendishly compelling gameplay loop and a steady stream of secrets and discoveries makes it easy to see how a few hours can disappear rapidly playing it.

I would say the progress blocking rng is less of an issue than it is an opportunity for learning. Even on the times I've blocked myself off too early, I have plenty of steps left, so I've tried exploring rooms a bit more, exploring the grounds outside, and also just learning what I could have done differently.

You are going to have runs that end quite early, it's the nature of the game. Some runs I've maybe wasted keys that I shouldn't have, built rooms with not enough doors just because I took a chance on the bonus from that room, didn't use gems wisely etc. And some of my runs last night I went into it just trying to create rooms I hadn't built yet so I could learn about them for future runs, or some rooms where the more you build them you give a buff for a later run.

Even just looking at the room directory and seeing how many different types of rooms I haven't built yet, it's probably going to take 30 or so runs before you start making any proper headway in completing the main goal. So as annoying as it may be to have a run end early, just have to see what you can take/learn from it for future runs.

Also: f*ck the chapel. 1 coin per entry! Wouldn't even be on my radar if it wasn't for those sweet, sweet extra exit doors :P

As for the rng progress blocking, it's not that big a deal. I'd liken it to tetris not getting the blocks you need and hitting the ceiling. It's all part of the loop. I like how runs can be quick, pick up and do 1 day if you don't have much time.

If you don't like rouge-like, RNG-heavy games, then fair enough - this isn't going to be for you.

But the entire core premise and gameplay of the game is built around the randomisation, repetition, drafting system, and gaining knowledge about how rooms work + fit together. Without that, well it's not Blue Prince anymore.

I wasn't aware tbh. I heard good things about it, but didn't look much into it because I don't like ruining games for myself. So I just presumed it was a puzzle game. But it has allowed me to confirm my dislike for rng heavy games, so I can avoid similar ones in the future.

I don't mind rng loot, but not being able to progress because the game gave me 3 unsuitable options blocking progress... not for me. Hades has rng with the perks, but its still possible to finish it with bad rng. This, and these types of games, straight up block progress, nothing to do with me. Grinding a puzzle game is new for me, and not welcome!

Best of luck to those who do like it though.

It think RNG game ending stuff is fine if a game isn't that long. It's kind of fun to just roll with bad RNG and maybe figure something out you didn't before. I finished shiren the wanderer last year and each dungeon dive felt like it's own little story that ended in disaster every time I played it. And I loved it.

Think you just have to take the game on it's own terms for what it is and roll with it. Its not going to let you finish it on your first go like most games, ending up in unwinnable situations and starting over is a part of the experience and something to get frustrated about.

I definitely appreciate it won't be for everyone - hell, I don't think there's a game on this planet that is 'for everyone'.

But randomisation and repetition can be incredibly valuable tools in game design, from Shiren to Spelunky. Truly interesting and exciting things can emerge from having the player do the same thing, but different, several times - with randomness often adding spice and excitement to that technique.

Funny enough, Kirk Hamilton has done a rare bit of games writing on that topic and Blue Prince over on his Substack: https://kirkhamilton.substack.com/p/theme-and-theme-and-variations

He's the main reason I listen to Triple Click, as used to love his reviews and writing over on Kotaku back in the day. Just a really insightful and enthuastic person when it comes to thinking about games.

I have to try it myself in fairness. Bought it last night and ended up playing Time Gal of all things.

Many's a Hades run where after the first 2 or 3 rooms and the boons/rewards etc, I just knew "This ain't the run". Even being experienced in beating the game multiple times you just know the stuff you're getting really doesn't suit your playstyle. But I'd still belt through because of the incremental permanent increases you might get, the resources so you can level up for the next run, and even sometimes just taking a risk I normally wouldn't take on a run and seeing what happens.

I suppose the more roguelikes you play, the more you just get used to it and accept it. Same with Souls games, the more you play and understand them, the more attuned you are when starting a new one on what to expect and how to deal with it.

But hey, BP was free on PS+ and Gamepass, so I think it was worth a try even if you don't like roguelikes, but if it's not for you, no harm.

For what it's worth, I'd say most runs last night were around 10-15 mins for me. You start absolutely flying through rooms once you know what they are. There was one really good run which ended up being around 45 mins I reckon (a good portion of that staring at a pump and figuring out how to work it) and the first one or two were slower as I was figuring out what was going on.

TBH my first run was a bit of a mess as I hadn't been paying attention to the risk of locking myself in :P

A lot of my notes from last night were documenting damn near everything in each room. Barely jotted down any notes on most of my runs after because I'm starting to understand better that it's more puzzles and some particular things you need to take note of, probably not things like "With = Fire, Without = Tree?"

This is really good. I’ve done 3 days and got to rank 7 on the last one before the RNG gods punished me.

I haven’t been taking notes, but I’m going to have to start! Will try and get properly stuck in at the weekend if possible with the iPad notes app beside me. There’s already a ton of stuff I’ve read that I’ve forgotten that is no doubt going to be important at some stage!

I've only had time for a couple of runs so far, but I'm loving it. Can't wait until Sunday when I'll be able to sink a good few hours into it.

Loving it so far, it was day 3 that felt great. Before that I was a bit baffled by it all. I spent too long walking around outside on day one.

Prob best advice for the first few goes is to just try open as many doors as you can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Had some crazy good runs and found/unlocked a whole bunch of stuff, including some permanent buffs/unlocks. Hesitant to go into detail because they're worth following the threads of yourself.

Main advice I'd give is to focus on trying to solve one new puzzle each day. Which one that might be depends on which rooms you find, but if you're trying to solve too much in the one go you'll run out of resources too quickly. And try to always draft rooms you haven't done before. Never know what hints there might be in them.

Have to peel myself away from this, it's so good!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

My final run last night, I filled every room bar one space by the entrance, but essentially locked myself out. Had enough steps so said I may as well fill that last empty space, see what I get. Chose an archived floor plan, said I'd take a chance with it.

My run kept going for nearly another hour after that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,276 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Nice. I filled 30 rooms last night and thought how hard it would be to full 45.

Funnily enough, filling all 45 rooms unlocked my first trophy. About 10 hours into the game, and I'd realised that was the first and only trophy I've gotten.
