Teach Pobail Mhuire in Doirí Beaga gutted by fire last night, reported at 4 am. I think it is nice we started booasted security on our churches and ensuring insurance is correct because we could be facing a wave of terrorist church burnings like France is right now.

There's been a crazy number of churches going on fire I Europe lately. Very unfortunate timing being the holiest day for said church.

aye I realise now but was my initial thought. Not one bit interested in religion but it’s a shame to see such beautiful buildings burned down

Sigh. I remember the wild conspiracy nonsense when Notre Dame burned, that "the Muslims" did it. No evidence required of course, just bigotry. If it had happened a century earlier it would no doubt have been "the Jews".

53 year old wiring is :

old enough to be potentially dangerous
not old enough to have definitely been replaced.

Those 1970s / late 1960s churches aren't beautiful, they're generally horrific in appearance and not even well designed for their purpose. Bad acoustics, draughty, leaky, can't be heated, etc

The criteria applied were rapid build and "modern" appearance

The Donegel church fire was not the only one. There was another in Dublin on monday, thankfully less harmful.

Old wiring that is underrated can cause fires but that is when demand is high. not in the middle of the night when the all or most power use has ceased.

While i agree this is more likely to happen under load, we had a house fire last year that was due to an electrical fault with no one in the house and negligible energy being used. Happens easily enough unfortunately. I haven't seen any suggestions of possible arson in mainstream media which seems to be the implication here.
