really annoying 2 pc network problem.
    1 xp home pc
    1 xp pro pc

it worked for a bit. basically the xp home pc has the internet connection.
it has ip address set to 192.169.0.1 and subnet mask the usually treble 255

the second pc, xp pro, seems to be having trouble to dhcp (sp?) ... anyway when i set it to set ip automatically, it does, and says connected on network (as both do) but has a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 and a random ip address. can't ping etc... like this

when i force ip and subnet mask, can ping other machine, but can't do anything in terms of sharing files, net anything like that

the only time it worked was during 1 or 2 startups it managed to pick the right subnet mask treble 255, and an ip address and some mshome.net thing...

plz help, growing increasingly pished off

I dealt with a problem like this aswell recently, it actually turned out to be the firewall (there were two installed for some odd reason!) which I guess must have been interfering with DHCP... after uninstalling both of them, I was back in business.
Actually chump, while using all auto (DHCP) on the second machine... if you open cmd and run ipconfig, does the second machine have a default gateway listed?
This was like the problem I was having... try adding 192.169.x.x to your firewalls allowed range if you can... or try uninstalling it temporarily to see if that's the problem.

make sure you have firewalls off!

oh thats right, forgot to mention the default gateway, you using dsl i presume and in that case your second pc should work fine with internet if you have the modem ip as default gateway considering that you have the 1st pc set to share internet, dont use auto detect in internet options!

Well tbh, with XP's ICS, DHCP will take care of the default gateway for you... if you aren't seeing a default gateway at all when you've got the client set to use DHCP then you know it's got some problems connecting.

after a reboot or two and going thru network connection wizard on both machine again, with the internet machine fixed ip, i've managed to get internet sharing and am actually using second machine now to type this...

this machine has xp pro sp2 running sygate firewall (which ive set permissions to allow network traffic) but i stopped that now, and also the sp2 firewall, still no joy.

the other machine (with net access) also i shut down sygate firewall and still same issue... tis a real pain at this stage...

thanks for the help so far anyhow!

try fixed ip on both with file sharing on you should be able to share files, you need to have NetBios installed for the network devices you using on both PC to ensure file sharing to work!

Actually the funny thing was, the problem didn't sort itself out until I uninstalled the firewall completely... which was weird.
If you can easily reinstall the firewall, I'd definitly give it a try... even when you 'stop' them, there's usualy still some of its processes running.
Worth a try if you're banging your head against the wall. ;)

Also RE: filesharing... if you're using a crossover cable I'd suggest using half-duplex on both network cards, it sorted out a problem I had before with dodgy windows file&print sharing.

Sounds like you've got ICS sorted, does it work after you reboot aswell or is it still buggy?
The only problem now is filesharing? or are you still at square 1?

    it survived a reboot there...

    still no filesharing capabilites

the fnny thing is it worked a bit yesterday with filesharing...

not too shure at all to be honest... gona try another reset and maybe reloading some network protocols...

Got it working... well, i'm not gona reboot just incase! but

i reinstalled netbeui on each machine and i installed the other NWLink protocol set...

and both internet and file sharing this time...

i would not be surprised if i didnt have this luxury after the next reboot... but it'll do for the minute/... thanks for help...
