Getting it...

That's the problem I've got right now...
Any Linux distros I've used before have come from PC mag cover disks... I can't seem to find any dedicated Linux mags with chopped-down distros on their cover CD... and I'm faaar too tight to pay for a distro in some retail outlet.
Downloading it is a big laugh... even on duel-ISDN, there's no way I'm downloading ~3 Gigs of RPMS that I'll never use anyway.
Probably cheaper to buy it in the shops, than pay eircom for the download.

Question is: are there any cut-down versions you can download? ... something less than 300MB would be nice, just the bare essentials + GUI and some basic apps... the distros I've seen on the cover CD's seem to be cut down to the scutt.
    :::::::::::
Or failing that, are there any decent news agents in town where I could pick up a £6 mag with some Linux distro on the cover?

Not that I'm really too bothered, Win2k meets my needs... I just want something to tinker with :)

Well, I know you're in dublin, so it shouldn't be too hard for you to get your hands on a linux distro. If I recall correctly, some of the smartey linux men from the ILUG are willing to "lend" linux distro CDs to people, or burn them copies in exchange for a few blank CDs and so on. Have a look around there.

Most distro's give you the option to do an ftp install.
You just download 2 or 3 floppy images fdisk/yadda-yadda then select what packages
you want to install, and leave it going for a few hours.

Depending on what you want you can get a pretty small base install.
You used to be able to get a base debian install by downloading a 12M odd .tgz (.deb ??)and installing it.

Of course if you want to be installing all sorts of X apps graphics/office/blah its going to take a while....

Your best bet is to find a kind soul to burn you a copy.
Although, PCplus (AFAIR) generally has fairly full distro's on its cover CD.

Oops, just re-read your post, I think I missed the point slightly...

The "popular" distro's these days are really getting bloated, you really have to
so through all the packages and take out what you don't need.
Or else don't install any X stuff at first and only add things bit by bit...
    X is bloated really :)

AFAIR debian and slackware are fairly slimline compared to the likes of redhat,
on the other hand you could try one of the 'BSD's... :)

haven't used it, but it sounds like it might be right up your alley.
Anyhow you could always try Slackware, not that I'm trolling or anything, but slackware is the Uber-distro and everyone knows it,ok?

Bah, I don't have a CDRW... so no blank CDs either :p
Oh well, some fine day I'll wander into the news agents and spot a nice shiney cover disk with Mandrake8 or redhat.
