    Hi All,
I sprained my ankle pretty badly 3 years ago while playing football.. since then the ankle is pretty weak, but i hadnt injured it as such since, anyway bout a month ago i went over on the same ankle while running for the bus, i wasnt home in time to put ice on it, is still swollen now, not sore but every so often ill get a twinge in it. is it likely that i will have problems in the future? i easily go over on my ankles (clumsy me!),as a result dont wear uncomfortable shoes. should i wear an ankle support or leave it?

PS i know this may seem trivial, but its annoying at times, so opinions welcome!!

I would look into physio atm and you could do gentle stretching of the area. Icing it every night would not be a bad idea as well for maybe 10-15mins.
Ankle support is fine when doing sport but I'd advise against wearing it all the time.

I had recurrent problems with my ankle for years after getting a bad bleed into the joint. Same cause too - running for the bus.
Wearing a support too much will cause the muscle there to deteriorate and your problems to worsen. While it is swollen you ought to have a bandage/support on it though as it may help reduce the swelling.
Cold compress was one thing that helped in my case. Also they got me to put it in warm water and cold water alternately for a few minutes at a time for 20 minutes or so (don't remember how long). This was good for reducing the swelling too.
Another good idea is to do balance exercises so you don't go over on it so easily. If you don't have good balance you could practice standing on one leg with your eyes closed, which will help develop it. You probably will find that easy if you already have good balance.
You definitely should go to a physio anyway if it is swollen and you're still having problems after 3 years.
Do you bruise easily in general? And get sprains and things? It might be a good idea to get tested for coagulation deficiency.

my mam sent me over a support to wear, but i only wore it once or twice, i thought, as you's said that it would weaken the ankle.
well i dont bruise easily in the sence that if i hit my arm off somethin i get a black bruise, i do bruise but i wouldnt say excessively / abnormally. ive only had trouble with this particluar ankle, tho i think i did lightly sprain the right ankle once, but nothing recurring, it wasnt as bad as the left.
phsio atm isnt feasible as im abroad for the year, and wouldnt have the time / ability to go to physio in France, is that not a bit drastic for an ankle that i only sprained, not broke?

You could get yourself a wobble board and use that to strengthen your ankle

Sprains can be pretty severe. I didn't break my ankle and I certainly needed a lot of treatment.
Wobble board would help with balance too I think.
Tai Chi Chuan is excellent for developing balance too - possibly the best thing for it.

Done my ankle about 12 or more times now. Same ankle but im back playing sports now and all i do is just strap it up before a game or during traning. You should not keep it on 24/7 like the others say. Also if you do sport do warm ups on your ankle by rotating it around in a circle even if you dont do sport and just want it to use the muscle to make it stronger again. I did mine first when i was 18 and now im 28. I dont get the pains anymore and it looks fine but its just the worst injury you could wish on someone and i have had LOTS of injurys.

Also one thing i like to do to make your ankle strong is go to a step and just have half of your feet on the step and half off. Then raise your self and lower your self and do this as offten as you can. But if it is causing you pain to do so then you should stop as your injury has not healed and you should wait till it has.

also do what other people said in this tread its all good advice.
