I'm inclined to side with the OP on this one. Nice and progressive. No instrument is overused. Well constructed and rounded.

I'm not the biggest Coldplay fan around. Chris' voice nearly bottoms out at "stuck in reverrr....errrrrse" and I don't think he's a very talented singer, but song-wise, Fix You is up there, as the OP said, for many many reasons.

I agree with you, Death Cab's "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" is a great song. I like The Killers' Somebody told me... and John Mayer's Daughters, although I think that may have came out in 2004.

Attack and BYOB/Revenga by System of a Down have really clicked with me, but my favourite, I think, has to be Abduction by Bruce Dickinson. Tyranny of Souls is a pretty poor album but that's a class track...
