Firefox 1.5 and Java problems

I've done a search on this forum but I haven't found anything that answers my question. I upgraded my Firefox to version 1.5 the other day. When I upgraded I found that all my Java, which had worked previously with the older version of Firefox, now didn't work. I tried a couple of different chat rooms and websites with Java toolbars and they didn't work.

So I downloaded the latest version of the Java console from here which was linked to on Firefox's site. My Java still isn't working, I'm getting the little coffee cup appearing in my system tray but no Java action in Firefox. I tried from IE too and I'm just getting a box with a red X in it.

Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong and how to rectify it?

    Thanks in advance.

    Help!

You could uninstall the Java completely (even the registry entries, difficult if you're not sure what you're doing...)

And reinstalling it with the full JRE (click the Offline Installation, instead of from the online installer)
    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

If that doesn't work, I'd try uninstalling both Java AND Firefox, then install the Java (from the full installer) first and then Firefox.

Tools - Options -Content -> Enable Java ticked? (Rule out the obvious)
Try disabling or removing older extentions..And download new ones for 1.5 compat.

I made sure Java was enabled, I'm luckily not that techno-illiterate :).

Hmmm, I really don't know what I'm doing there. I'm aware that such a thing as a registry entry exists but after that I'm lost.

you could use system restore to rollback to before you upgraded. Then uninstall firefox + java [the old versions] then install the newest versions of both.

This will remove the new registry entries and all should be good.

Will this remove documents that I've saved since then? I've a lot of college stuff (saved journal articles, essays and whatnot) that I need.

No but it will restore any settings you have changed or programs you have installed since the backup

does JAva/OpenStream (i think thats wat it sed) sound familiar? i have exact same problem. did a virus scan wit AVG-Free and found too instances of it. only did it today so dunno if its fixed totally yet.

I did a virus scan earlier today and it turned nothing up.

I didn't get very far with system restore, I ended up installing Opera instead. Now my Java's working fine. However it's not as nice as Firefox was. I'm sure I'll grow to love it in time.

Thanks for all the pointers chaps.

It might be an issue of trusted sites. Did you check that? Also if you have scriptblock installed I would suggest uninstalling it and then install again (had similar problems with it).

I believe this is an issue with FF 1.5. The FF developers somehow broke the Java side of Firefox and never noticed, sloppy testing or whatever...

I had FF 1.0.7 running with all the bells and whistles on two machines - one with Windows XP, the other with Windows 2000. Once I upgraded to FF 1.5, Java applets stopped working in FF on each machine. If you type in about:\plugins (minus the \) in the address bar, FF reports the Java plugins to be correctly installed yet they do not work?

Can anyone with FF 1.5 see the dancing Duke on this page:

    http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

Until someone proves otherwise, the solution is to roll back to version 1.0.7 of FF.

Yet you will see dancing Duke in Internet Explorer and all versions of Firefox prior to 1.5. I spent half a day wrecking my head over this problem and I still don't have a solution.

    So it's not just me.

I did notice when I went into the Java Control Panel > Advanced > <Applet> Tag support that the Mozilla box wasn't ticked and when I did tick it and clicked "Apply" it told me Mozilla wasn't properly installed or I wasn't authorised to change it (I've since reinstalled Mozilla several times and got the same response). Would this be anything to do with it?

Dancing Duke works for me, FF 1.5 with JRE/SDK 1.4.2_10 [After clicking on it..]
    Check Extensions and Trusted sites.

Also: Double click on the JAVA tary icon -> Is there an (error) message - dump it here please?

Where do I check trusted sites?

I can only see AdBlock listed in Extensions.

And no error message when I double click the Java tray icon.

Please remove adblock, restart FF and test.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,579 ✭✭✭BopNiblets

    Trusted sites are in Tools->Options->Content

Get NoScript too, you'll just have to allow all the sites you need to allow scripts, but it nukes any dodgy Java or JavaScript stuff.

It was adblock that was blocking the applet. Is there anyway of using adblock and still being able to use applets?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,364 ✭✭✭Ardent

I un-installed Adblock and upgraded to FF 1.5. Java applets working again.

    Adblock is the problem.

I think if you turn off Object Tabs (the little Adblock tab that appears)
You can turn it off in Adblock Preferences->Adblock Options.

That may help. Typically, downloading the newer version of AdBlock does the job.

    Neither of those options help.

Here is a dev build of Adblock (http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/extfirefox/Adblock_0.5.3.040.xpi) that apparently fixes the issue.

Yeah getting rid of AdBlock has fixed mine too. Thanks guys!

What do you do with that file to allow to have AdBlock and working Java?

Once you jave un-installed Adblock from FF 1.5, re-install with the version in the link.

I downloaded the file from the link and Windows doesn't recognise it.

In FF: File -> Open... open the file

I got it in the end, it dawned on me after about half an hour that it probably needed to be opened in FF. Yet again, thanks for the help lads.
