Hi, I am writing this for a friend as he has a Mac and has just got an I Pod for Xmas. He cannot get it to connect Via USB to his mac and he has been told he has to upgrade is OS for this to work. He has been told that it will cost him about €75 to do this. Is this correct or is there anything that can be done to avoid this extra cost? I do not know anything about Macs as I am a pc man.

Strange, I thought OS 10.1 would manage the iPod. Has he got the install disks working and iTunes? Also does his computer have a firewire port - the iPod should have come with a firewire cable also.

Tell him to use the other cable he was given. It's a firewire cable.
If it's the same as my ipod then the cable connecting the plug (in the wall) to the dock the ipod sits in is a firewire one. Disconnect that from the plug and the dock and use it to connect the ipod to the computer. How old is the computer?

*scratches head to think of machines without firewire shipped with 10.1*

OS X v10.1.5 (Or later) is required for iTunes (v4) AFAIK.
What was the upgrade offer exactly?

    I'd suggest trying alternative software..

Ya, a Mac running OS X 1.0 or Puma will need to be up graded to work a new video iPod. The new 5G iPods no longer suport firewire, so he'll have to use the USB port which is probably a USB 1 seeing he's got an older Mac. USB 1 will work, but it's going to be slow. He was told €75 for the a new OS, well that sounds like OS X 3 Panther which should be ok. If he uses his Mac a lot and uses it to go online then he really should upgrade anyway. Tiger is the latest OS and thats around €129. What kind of Mac does he own a G3 or G4?

The new iPods don't support Firewire? That sucks.

Yeah, Apple lost the Licensing for Firewire for their iPods. All ipods are now USB, even for Macs.

Eh... Apple owns the Firewire licensing rights, having developed the technology in the first place.
